Progressive D.A.’s prosecute the darnedest people!
Aside from the President of the United States, do any public officials have more life-changing discretion than your local district attorney?
Dane County D.A. Ismael Ozanne has chosen to prosecute for felony child abuse one Corey Saffold, who happens to be the high school director of crisis management (don’t you love Big Education bureaucracy!) in suburban Verona WI. Mr. Saffold’s alleged crime: he struck a 17-year-old student — apparently a chronic troublemaker who was “using profanity to threaten others with beatings and possible gunfire,” according to this account.
The lad — who stands 6’4″ and weighs 230 pounds — resisted being taken to the principal’s office, a scuffle ensued with “multiple staff” responding, including Mr. Saffold. (See it here.)
The Werkes finds it significant that the Verona school district has kept Mr. Saffold on the payroll these five months after the incident — a stark contrast to former Madison district superintendent Jennifer Cheatham, who forced out “Mr. Rob” at Whitehorse middle school in much less pugilistic circumstances, before law enforcement had even completed its investigation. (They found him guiltless.)
Meanwhile, in the Big Apple
It may be more than coincidental that in New York City, notoriously progressive D.A. Alvin Bragg is prosecuting (besides Donald Trump) a 25-year-old former Marine, Daniel Penny, for putting a disruptive subway rider in a chokehold that proved fatal. The 30-year-old homeless man had been shouting at passengers and demanding money. No stranger to the police blotter, Jordan Neely had just been released from Rikers Island for punching a 67-year-old woman in the face, breaking her nose and eye socket.
The chokehold, it is alleged, lasted approximately six minutes “and continued well past the point at which Mr. Neely had stopped purposeful movement,” according to the criminal charge.
Certainly, it can be argued that Mr. Penny used excessive force. After all, the poor mope is dead. But is the defendant a trained police officer, thereby to be held to a higher standard? Another Derek Chauvin? Or was he merely a good samaritan, trying to get home, to work or school, without having to travel through Beirut first?
It may be consequential that Mr. Penny is a white man accused of victimizing a black man while Mr. Saffold is a black man in Verona whose alleged victim is the same — and very much alive. And, who knows? Getting the help he needs.

One could argue (and we do, we do!) that Verona high school’s director of crisis management was only earning his paycheck by (ahem!) managing a crisis. (“Pin a medal …”) Or are faculty required to guide the misbehaving minor to safety via vigorous sweeping of brooms on the hallway tiles, much as a curler might guide — but not touch — the stone over ice?
Faced with hell in the hallway, more than one Madison school principal has retreated to the office. The so-called safety officers at Madison La Follette high school damned the school principal for turning in a gun-carrying student. (Read & Weep!)
As for NY, maybe the City wouldn’t have to consider charging motorists a “congestion fee” for entering Manhattan Island if taking the subway wasn’t a scene out of a Mad Max movie.
Blaska’s Bottom Lines: The Werkes knows better than to blame “Society” here. That’s a dodge worse than searching for “root causes.” Maybe the lesson taught by the two district attorneys — both Democrats doncha know — is this: Just Walk Away Renee.

Why not? DA Ismael Ozanne charges people doing their job with crimes and people committing crimes with little or no prosecution. Looking at the ballot in Dane County and see most offices for Dane County and state assembly and senate are uncontested and are all (D).
The [ ] running the Dane County RePub Party is going to change that. They are happy they get 18% of the vote.
Deserving of mention is the Madison Wets HS/Marlon Anderson debacle five (5) years ago as we speak?
“the Verona school district has kept Mr. Saffold on the payroll these five months after the incident”
Is there insufficient evidence to overturn the call on the field, or is this an Ozanne make-up call for when he failed to buckle under to the bLack community when it asked for…nay demanded…Mr. Rob’s pate_on_a_platter?
Saffold’s (hopefully) saving grace is that he’s not under the race-obsessed, White Lefty Guilt suffocated MMSD’s pudgy thumbs.
To paraphrase Colonel Kurtz: “If we had a Wally Schoessow, a Milton McPike, and their X-Chromosomal equivalents, in each of our High/Middle Schools, OUR TROUBLES HERE WOULD BE OVER VERY QUICKLY.”
The Gotch
As Bob points out, here in our 40 square miles surrounded by reality, we rarely have a choice when voting because most offices have one candidate. Hapless DA Izzy Ozone has a lifetime tenure as nobody ever runs against him.
