Blaska Policy Werkes

NY Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch at the dedication of the 9/11 police memorial: “Preserving that history means also preserving that moral clarity that the men who attacked this city were terrorists, the men and women who ran into that towers to save lives were heroes. 25 years cannot be allowed to blur that distinction and shame on those who do.”

  • Doing the ‘safe thing’ in Madison WI

About Tuesday night’s marathon Love Fest at the Madison Common Council meeting the Policy Werkes has little to report except that everyone felt good and tired after it was all over. And it was a good kind of tired. The City of Madison struck a symbolic blow at Trump’s temporary travel restrictions on natives of…

  • Did anyone catch the Super Bowl? How was it?

How many Super Bowls have been absolute bores? This one depleted the Stately Manor’s bin of superlatives. It was the best-est and the Squire watched the very first one when St. Vince patrolled the sidelines in overcoat and fedora 50 years ago. Had vowed to skip it. We hate New England here at the Manor…

  • Joe McCarthy lives (and plays the race card in Madison politics)!

It is scoundrel time in Madison, WI. A certain alderman, an elected official, one Dave Ahrens by name, is aggressively playing the race card. Couple that with some old fashioned guilt by association via three degrees of separation and you have the modern Madison anti-police state. “How can a non-racist candidate be Trump supporter?” Ahrens…

  • Liberal fascists are re-electing Trump

Our liberal-progressive-socialist acquaintances are populating their on-line social networks and protest marches with Hitler/Trump references. But, so far as we know, neither Trump nor his supporters have injured police, smashed windows, burned automobiles, or shut down anyone’s free speech. The unhinged Left is intent on converting more Americans to Trump. What happened Wednesday night on…

  • When you can’t attack Betsy DeVos on the merits …

It may seem like Your Humble Bloggeur is picking on his old boss Dave Zweifel. Well, O.K., I am picking on him. Maybe it’s Pavlovian; maybe the target is too inviting. Dave ruminates, “And to think we could have had President Sanders.” Yeah, and we also could have had a V-8. (Cue Dandy Don: If…

  • Madison secedes from the Union

This just in from Mayor Paul Soglin 02-01-17 at 2:30 p.m.:   There is a proposal now, circulating among city council members to reaffirm and update our sanctuary city status and align it with present city administrative policies and procedures. I support that effort. However, I am deeply troubled and concerned by the introduction of one…

After 9/11

The urge to blame America and stop it from responding began immediately.

In the years after 9/11, blaming America for the activities of Islamic terrorists became a mania among left-tilting scribblers the world over. When they couldn’t reasonably attach culpability to America—because the attack happened in France or Spain, which consistently oppose U.S. interventions—the enlightened blamed America’s stand-in, Israel. Somehow the jihadists always lacked agency.  …

The war on terror launched in the days afterward involved innumerable blunders and still invites derision from the globe’s expert class. But a quarter-century later, the country hasn’t sustained another strike of similar proportions, and the terror networks that once produced fighters by the thousand have had their leaders killed, their money frozen and their recruits severely pruned.

America wouldn’t, and couldn’t, consent to live with the madmen. — Barton Swaim, Wall Street Journal

Political stupidity

Another election season is upon us. … One party is hoisting monuments to a fading 80-year-old president who hasn’t done much except get America stuck in another Middle East war while attacking the nice Canadians to our north with irrational tariffs and weird hockey memes. The other is making sweeping promises to do something about the “cost-of-living crisis” through massive government spending and price caps with scant reflection on why they didn’t address the high cost of living just a few short years ago when they had control of government. — John Halpin, “The emptiness of contemporary politics
