On the nekkid lady calendar out in the carriage house, we’re circling Tuesday, September 10. That night at 8 CDT the first (and maybe only) debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump will air on ABC TV. We’re installing fresh new vacuum tubes in the b&w Philco and wearing raincoats for the blood spatter.
Kamala is going to kill. Her opponent is going to throw more spaghetti on the wall than Oscar in the Odd Couple (it’s linguini!) but none of it is going to stick.

Kamala is going all Law ’n Order these days after posting bail for Tim Walz’ arsonists when George Floyd’s mostly peaceful protests torched Minneapolis. Another of those election eve conversions. The Democrats’ presidential nominee said she would introduce herself as she did while district attorney in Oakland CA: “Kamala for the People.” In her acceptance speech Thursday 08-22-24 at the Chicago convention, she played Jack McCoy in Law & Order. (Let’s also admit: her party kept Hamas out of the convention and off the screen without billy clubs. I.E., no split screens.)

The Donald could toy with a punch drunk palooka like Joe Biden; this lady floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee! It’s got to be said: Donald Trump has lead feet. He’s never more stupid than when he strays from the script. “Hannibal Lecter”? How does one spin that? When he’s on script, as the wondrous oracle Peggy Noonan writes:
He’s no good when he reads from the prompter, he doesn’t respect what’s on it. It bores him, and he talks like a tranquilized robot. He knows what he does well — shock, entertain, mention two or three big issues. He’s having trouble making a stinging critique of Democratic policy because he’s insulted everything over the years, and when he says something’s bad now it just seems part of his act and doesn’t land.
It’s called Trump fatigue. This is his third go-around. Forget that Kamala’s 2020 presidential campaign collapsed without winning a single delegate. The woman brought Joe Biden to his knees during that June’s cattle call of Democrats. After Biden rhapsodized about of working with southern segregationists that “never called me boy,” Kamala pounced:
“There was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day. And that little girl was me.”
This time, she’s got the Democrat(ic) machine behind her. Not to mention most of the news media, Hollywood, academia, and — except for Kid Rock and Lee Greenwood — the music industry. Republicans remain a fractured party. Many kept voting Nikki Haley even after she dropped out. No past presidents at the Milwaukee convention. Or vice presidents. What does that tell you?
Kamala Harris would not be the first presidential candidate to be misunder-estimated, as W might have said. Truman was so much toast newspapers reported his defeat before the polls closed. JFK was regarded as a millionaire’s playboy son. Ronald Reagan was Bedtime for Bonzo.
Too many low punches
Harris is playing offense — and what a target-rich environment! Mr. Trump, is it not true that you called POWs “losers”? Sir, we have witnesses. Mr. Trump, is it not true you summoned and motivated the insurrectionists on January 6? We have video. Pardoning Proud Boys, grabbing P, abandoning Mike Pence to the mob, running up the deficit, hobnobbing with Kim Jong Un, “Dictator on Day One,” suspend the Constitution. Oh, and those felony convictions.
Trump will bluster, deny, free-associate, and call schoolyard names. In short, he’ll do what Tailgunner Joe McCarthy did during the Army/McCarthy hearings 70 years ago: make a damn fool of himself.
Blaska’s Bottom Line: At long last, Donald Trump will have no shame. Republicans will wonder how they could have let a winnable election slip through their fingers.

In planning to run an especially nasty rapids, the paddler scouts the drops, assiduously plans which chutes to hit, which rollers to avoid, which eddies to cower into. And somewhere into the run when the river from the whitewater doesn’t at all resemble the river from the banks 20 feet up, the paddler ditches all plans and resigns himself to getting to the bottom successfully by whatever means necessary. Seventy+ days out voters are in an analogous situation; the election doesn’t resemble what we’d planned and hoped for, and it’s incumbent on us to fight like hell to be sure when we hit the calm waters of November 6 the lesser of evils is not elected.

Remember her interview with Lester Holt of NBC who, contrary to every instinct in his body, attempted to pin her down on why, as Border Czar, she never bothered to visit the border? She responded with some lame quip about never having visited Europe either, followed by her signature cackle. Speaking of the latter, I’m sure that every day begins with her advisors reminding her, as Archie famously advised Edith, to stifle herself.

Compared to Harris, Trump will be fine. He could destroy her with one question: “when did you become aware of Biden’s decline?”.
