Ald. Benford under-thinks policing

 More from ‘Madison’s token conservative’

(Does that make Blaska a protected class?)

Madison is over-policing certain populations, according to the official progressive party line. You’ll have to take it on faith because that theorem has never been challenged — much less empirically proven.

Apologists for this dogma fall back on the lazy supposition that if X group is arrested, stopped in traffic, et cetera in any proportion not corresponding one for one to their demographics in the total population, they are “over-policed.” A racial disparity.

The statistic is a few years old, but boys are disciplined in the Madison public schools at a ratio of 59 to 41 for girls. Are the schools over-policing boys? Or is it too difficult to believe that boys act out more often? Women are predominantly arrested for embezzlement. Is law enforcement biased against women or does that gender tend to handle the finances more frequently at small businesses, charities, and local government?

Ald. Brian Benford

We return to Madison Ald. Brian Benford who on the electronic pages of The Daily Beast accused “Madison’s token conservative” of racism most foul for not acknowledging the truth of over-policing.

Benford said he didn’t mind Blaska questioning the resolution passed in September. But he said filing a lawsuit against it and simply rejecting the core reasons why the board was created, such as the over-policing of minority communities, displays a certain level of dismissiveness he can only chalk up to racism.

“This is a social justice issue and he’s clearly a racist,” Benford said.

Are Madison police arresting minority persons for spitting on the sidewalk? Ignoring shootouts between FFA members and the Stamp Club?

But then, Ald. Brian Benford is a dues-paying Socialist, endorsed by that political party along with Rebecca Kemble, Yannette Figueroa Cole, Nikki Conklin, Brandi Grayson, and Mad Max Prestigiacomo. Allied with Freedom Inc., Urban Triage, and Free the 350 Bail Fund. Benford and comrades are Derail the Jail, Defund the Police, Cops Out of Schools, and reparations. But no police body cameras.

“If people had the opportunity to really think about reimagining public safety where everyone felt safe in the city of Madison, that it would be clear that we really do need to reallocate funding …”

— Ald. Brian Benford, as quoted in RedMadison, the local socialist organ. (Love its “Dear Commie” feature!)

Benford’s (and John Nichols’) Democratic Socialists of America are unwavering supporters of dictator Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela and his predecessor, the murderer and torturer Hugo Chávez. (Source here.)

Blaska’s Bottom Line: Brian Benford’s critical race theorizing is why Blaska is a conservative — however token.

How many more token conservatives are out there?

Really? Over-policed? You gotta be kidding me.
If anything, black communities are UNDER policed.

Any rational, reasonable, honest discussion about blacks and policing can’t take place without acknowledging the disproportion amount of crime committed by blacks. According to the DOJ “Felony Defendants in Large Urban Counties”, blacks committed 62% of robberies, 45% of assaults and accounted for 57% of murders.

Of course, race-baiting bigots like Benford will ignore these inconvenient facts when it doesn’t advance the phony narrative of BLM and Antifa, … that all cops are bad.

Without any proof, the militant wings of the D卐M☭CRAT Party, … the hive-minded media, BLM and Antifa, … promote the Lefty lie that blacks are victims of racism. Here’s the simple truth:
Criminal Behavior, … Not Racism, … Explains “Racial Disparities” In Policing.

If D卐M☭CRATS really want to help, they’d look closer to home for the root causes. They’d rethink their soft bigotry of low expectations for blacks and re-imagine their patriarchal proglobotic policies that have decimated black families. Only 18% of blacks were born outside of wedlock in the 60’s. Today, that number is over 75%. Lardheppus. And deliver us from evil.

Left-wing-driven welfare policies have incentivized women into marrying the government, caused generational dependence and encouraged men into abandoning their financial and moral responsibility. The historic, but butt-nekkid Emperor “Let Them Eat Hope” , Urkel, the First, even said, “A kid growing up without a father is 20 times more likely to end up in jail.”

    Sadly, he was right.

As soon as you point out these inconvenient facts, the conversation will be immediately directed to focus on the “root causes” of this criminal behavior, which brings us full circle to “white supremacy” and the “legacy of slavery.” A nice, neat package to exonerate black crime and blame it on white folks.

        Unfortunately, that’s too true, Treetoad.
Haters gotta hate. Racists gotta race.
        Bigots gotta blame. Someone else.

But blaming white folks for black criminal behavior isn’t logical thinking.
Besides, woketopian SJWs shouldn’t be so stingy assigning blame.
There’s plenty of blame to go around.

“White Supremacy”, “White Privilege” “Slavery” “Systemic Racism” are all convenient scapegoats for black failure, but those tropes are bogus boogeymen.
They’re perfect Marxist formulations for projecting Pravda-like proglobtic propaganda.

Think about it. Race baiters delegitimatize an entire society without blaming anyone in particular, so it elicits little opposition. It signifies both everything and nothing at the same time. It can neither be proven or disproven. It’s genius propaganda.

Let’s not kid ourselves, it’s not real justice they want, … just “socialist justice”.

Dovetails perfectly with Winston Churchill’s POV, “Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy. Its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.”

And Lefties are some of the most miserable people on the planet.
        This is most certainly true.

Over policing? Todays cops are almost 100% reactionary! Why stop that unregistered car doing 95mph down Park St just to get cameras in your face (that is IF it actually stopped for the police in the first place) and a bunch of racist taunts from a car load of black females?

Here is a typical MPD officer’s shift: Go through a ton of emails after briefing to try and follow up on your dozens of open cases. Figure out how to juggle your days off with court appearances. Run to your squad because there are no less than 20 calls holding at any given time. Decide which call is a higher priority to go to first. Priority calls only ya know. [Oh, you are involved in a 4 car crash with that above vehicle that fled?? To bad, we will not be responding. Call your insurance agent and do your own report.].

Calls start coming in for fights, assaults, stolen car, and shots fired. Guess where?? So I respond. Do I get to choose the sex, race, education level of the suspect? Nope. Soooo, the arrest is made with ample probable cause only to be another poor black male imprisoned at the Dane County Jail for a few hours before he is kicked on a signature bond. Never mind that he is already out of bail for 6 other open cases. But the system is rigged right!? Left leaning court commissioners, DAs, judges, public defenders, and other advocates all work to keep him out, but without punishment, he will be back again and again. But guess who gets all the blame?? Oh yes, those racists ass cops.

If I never had to respond to another “over policed” neighborhood, it would be a great day.

I’m sure you echo what most cops feel but can’t say for fear of retribution. It must be a relief to finally be able to get this all out.

One of my biggest challenges when running We Support the MPD was getting cops to open up. I understand WHY they were silent, but it was still frustrating. A few did confide in me (and I never betrayed them and never will), but even then, I sensed their hesitation to trust an outsider.

“Calls start coming in for fights, assaults, stolen car, and shots fired. Guess where?? So I respond.”

I often emphasized that cops go where they’re called, and that they have no control over who’s calling for service. I think I got through to a few, but sadly there are people who will never accept this fundamental truth.

Want to add that from where I sit, cops generally do a lousy job at defending themselves and their profession. Imagine the outcome if more cops (including your union) spoke up like you just did.

Cops are leaving law enforcement en masse, they’re demoralized, and are second guessing themselves – and as a result, the public is in more peril.

It really didn’t have to be like this.

Paula, So true… But I DO think if we (WE) stand up to them individually, much can be accomplished. No sarcasm, no rancor, no ad hominem, just common-sense observations. I made a few comments to BB’s FB page, RE: BWC, and eagerly wait for a non-vague answer. IMHO, if we do it right, we can chew from the-ankle-to-the-knee with simple facts.

OK, so I’m an optimist. But less stridency & more stating-the-facts is better than sitting on our hands.

George, absolutely. The facts DO speak for themselves.

One thing I loved about advocating for cops was helping convince civilians that cops aren’t the demons some think they are. Fortunately, there ARE people with open minds who simply needed to hear a different side of the story.

There are others, however who aren’t interested in the truth or even willing to meet half way; their mindset is fixed.

Looking back at the 3-plus years of We Support the MPD, I see things that I might have done differently; hindsight is always perfect, of course. I do know that everything I did came from the heart.

Good luck hearing back from BB. Will you let us know what he says?

MPD certainly challenges that “over-policing certain populations” is untrue.

But if you don’t think minorities are over-policed, you should look at actual arrest records. Look at who sits in our jail. If you think the arrest records are correct and normal and unbiased, then you must think some folks commit more crime based on the color of their skin, like Good Dog above. If that’s the case, then… the shoe fits.

So then it’s your belief that police are targeting minorities?

Please read Retiredpopo’s thread above for a different perspective.

“Calls start coming in for fights, assaults, stolen car, and shots fired. Guess where?? So I respond. Do I get to choose the sex, race, education level of the suspect? Nope.”

It seems to me that police go to where civilians call for service. Should the police not respond to these calls?
