City attorney describes public nuisances.
Madison’s woke progressives invoke “economic justice, social justice,” and “racial justice” as phonetic talismans to justify redistribution, disorder, and race-shaming.
Should surprise no one that our beloved city has a locus for this political malpractice. The Social Justice Center is located at 1202 Williamson Street. Progressive Dane, Democratic Socialists, and the Tenant Resource Center are among the 14 “justice” agencies harbored there.
The Social Justice Center is becoming a public nuisance, wouldn’t you know! This isn’t Blaska’s inner Scrooge talking. It’s the judgment of City of Madison assistant city attorney Jennifer Zilavy. In an official letter dated 08-05-2025, attorney Zilavy notified the Social Justice Center to:
abate the on-going nuisance activity that has been occurring on, and in association with, 1202 Williamson Street. Specifically, but not exclusively, the illegal drug activity, public urination and defecation, public intoxication, confrontational behavior, yelling, littering, hanging out at the property after hours, and sleeping on the property. ,,,
I want to address the word “nuisance.” I do not use it to inflame. I use it because that is precisely, by legal definition, what is occurring on SJC property, including the terrace.
The assistant city attorney continues:
People know that they can engage in all of the aforementioned prohibited activities and there will be no consequence.
These behaviors are affecting the safety, cleanliness, and overall quality of life for neighboring residents and businesses. The City has received complaints from those negatively impacted by these behaviors. — Jennifer Zilavy 08-05-25
These complaining neighbors are not exactly Trump’s Proud Boys. Willy Street is where the ’60s flower children collect their pensions. Voted 80% for Kamala Harris.
The elusive ‘root causes’
Rest assured, Madison social justice warriors, your Social Justice Center is fighting back. The City asked the SJC to post “No Trespassing” signs so that the uniforms could police the place after hours. The Social Justice Center “declined to do so,” Zilavy writes.
Social Justice Center treasurer Brenda Konkel (she’s everywhere!) assured the City of Madison that “We are not ‘throwing up our hands’ and ‘doing nothing,’ We are standing up for people’s constitutional rights and looking for solutions that get to the root causes.”
So far, the Social Justice Center property has not been formally designated a public nuisance, which would entitle the City to close it down. But the city attorney’s notice is a predicate to doing so.
Blaska’s Bottom Line: The less fortunate deserve help and empathy. But by searching for “solutions to root causes,” social Justice warriors encourage dysfunction as the victim’s due from their imagined oppressors — white, male, Christian, and successful. San Francisco is beginning to figure it out; some day Madison may, too.

I disagree. The Willy St. area is full of authentic progressives. I may disagree with their ideas but at least they live with the consequences of their actions.
