DEI just flunked out

The resignation of the president of Harvard University was overdue, a progressive scold admits in The Atlantic magazine. But not for her moral equivalence over anti-semitism! Claudine Gay’s only sin was plagiarism — what The Nation magazine pooh poohs as “minor academic pilferage” — not her school’s reverse racism, according to the Atlantic’s Tom Nichols.

“Her accusers acted in bad faith, but they’re not wrong. … In the real world, truth sometimes comes from terrible people with dishonorable motives,” Nichols equivocates.

Those terrible people are the likes of U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik and Christopher Rufo of the Manhattan Institute. Except that  Nichols never explores what might be their “terrible motives.” Stefanik in her congressional hearing famously exposed the moral squishiness of the presidents of Harvard, Penn, and MIT to the harsh glare of daylight. Rufo — more than any one — has exposed critical race theory as the three-card monte game it really is.

“Some of Gay’s defenders, especially in academia, have nevertheless taken the bait from right-wingers who always wanted to make Gay’s very existence as Harvard’s president into a larger debate about diversity and race on campus.”

Give SOME credit to the lady herself, Tom! DEI is the very reason for her hire a mere six months ago “after one of the shortest presidential searches in Harvard’s recent history,” Bret Stephens reports in the New York Times.

“How did someone with a scholarly record as thin as hers — she has not written a single book, has published only 11 journal articles in the past 26 years and made no seminal contributions to her field — reach the pinnacle of American academia?”

The answer, I think, is this: Where there used to be a pinnacle, there’s now a crater. It was created when the social-justice model of higher education, currently centered on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts — and heavily invested in the administrative side of the university — blew up the excellence model, centered on the ideal of intellectual merit and chiefly concerned with knowledge, discovery and the free and vigorous contest of ideas.

— “Claudine Gay and the limits of social engineering”

Vigorous REPRESSION of ideas

Vigorous contest of ideas! Not at elite institutions like Harvard! Harvard gets the worst score ever in the College Free Speech Rankings conducted by FIRE, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. How worst? Try zero out of a possible 100.

Problem with Jews? They’re white!

The trouble started in the mid-1970s, when the reality became clear that the liberal answer to racial inequality — the modern welfare state inaugurated by the Great Society — wasn’t working. … The black poverty rate declined dramatically from 1940 to 1960, less dramatically but still significantly from 1960 to 1970, and hardly at all after 1970. Yet decade after decade, the prescription from right-thinking liberals … remains the same: Double down on ’60s-style social-welfare policy, liberalize crime laws, and vilify whites other than themselves. …

“In the 2010s, “equity” and “inclusion” joined “diversity” to form an entire industry of consultants and corporate officers whose stated purpose is to foster equality in the workplace but who go about encouraging everyone to think constantly about racial identity.” — Barton Swaim, “How anti-racism becomes anti-semitism.”

We would say DEI is as dumb as a rock but that would be an insult to the UW-Madison's Chamberlin Rock.

Blaska’s Bottom Line: Harvard drafted Jennifer Cheatham out of the Madison Metropolitan School District. Jen is the superintendent who defenestrated a positive behavior coach at Whitehorse middle school BEFORE a police inquiry could exonerate the poor man. Mr. Rob made the mistake of being white while trying to restrain an unruly black student.

As if more evidence is needed, Al Sharpton plans to picket Harvard.

How far back must one go to find another Hahvahd President without ONE_SINGLE_PUBLISHED_BOOK.

    More than two (2) centuries.

MONEY QUOTE: “Shrinking the pool of candidates based on required race, gender, and/or sexual orientation criteria is not the right approach to identifying the best leaders for our most prestigious universities.

The old, fat, entitled white guy repeats himself again. If it wasn’t for his plagiarism, he would find it hard to come up with an original idea. Why not just buy yourself a rock, name it Chamberlin; that will make you feel better.

Does anyone believe that the Harvard committee that ended up hiring Claudine Gay DIDN’T set out with the explicit purpose of hiring a black woman (a black lesbian would have been the trifecta, but at least her last name is Gay)? This is the prevailing mindset among academic administrators: their sacred mission is to atone for their institutions’ past “sins,” foremost among them the fact that Ivy League universities (and even their less elitist brethren like UW-Madison) were founded by white men and for most of their history were populated at every level by the same. The fact that such atonement cannot be accomplished except by lowering standards troubles them not a whit; after all, those standards were put in place by racist, homophobic, white male colonists. Much has (rightly) been made of Gay’s plagiarism, but little has been said about her lack of scholarship. She contributed very little of worth to her chosen discipline–so little, in fact, that had she been white and male, she would never have been hired even for an assistant professorship at someplace like Harvard, let alone asked to lead it. I’m just waiting for someone on MSNBC to come right out and claim that the need to cite another person’s work is racist–you know, just like firing Claudine was racist. Even with this latest scandal from the groves of Academe, UW-Madison’s removal of the racist rock from Bascom Hill still takes the prize for shameless institutional cowardice.

So is DIE just dangerously ruinous to despicable Lefty academia and those whom they’re charged with teaching?

    Not exactly.

Its insidiously toxic influence spreads far and wide; to wit:

If anyone here has any doubt that crotch is full of crap, this will answer your questions. Nazarian, which crotch seems to credit with the downfall of America, is a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. Too quote her interview the problem impacting her profession is; “life and death situations caring for the most vulnerable”. So these “real and vital risks for millions” is nothing more than a bad nose job in Hollywood. Beware of crotch’s “toxic influence.” So; be wary platinum subscribers; the “vital risks for millions” may just be down the road from Rudi the pig.

Not much of a coherent point to this blog post except “DEI BAD”… but I’ll grab a couple of nuggets our host laid.

“DEI is the very reason for her hire”
I suppose, but in the sense that DEI has extended the privileges that White men have always enjoyed in the US to a few more people. People hired to positions like that have NEVER been hired through a neutral merit-based process. Cons are pushing a myth that once-upon-a-time, before evil DEI existed, people rose to power because of their merit. This is a lie. People have risen to power because of connections and/or money. Prof. Gay had the right connections, just like every other Ivy League president in history. But now it’s a problem… hmmm… why is it a problem now, and not ever before?

“How did someone with a scholarly record as thin as hers reach the pinnacle of American academia?”
I guess Cons will have to get themselves straight with this angle. Cons, including this very blog, are out there arguing that academic experience isn’t important for school administrators. Which is it? Should administrators be drawn from the most experienced teachers and researchers or is that not important? Or is it whatever angle is convenient at the moment to make political waves? Goofs are here one day saying superintendents shouldn’t have to have education degrees, and the next saying university presidents should be published authors… wrote a book about the Roman Empire? Take this job leading a university!

Citing “FIRE, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression”…
Go ahead and take a look at the funding for this group. There is a certain type of speech those funders are eager to stop: any that is critical of laissez-faire capitalism.

If Cons think everyone should hire only based on merit, how about we outlaw job interviews? Make every job applicant for every job perform an objective, merit-based task anonymously, and mandate that the best scoring applicant be offered the position. The employer can’t even know who it is until the salary negotiation is over. I’d be fine with that. The public sector has already gone a step down that road, at least for public safety jobs; what is the private sector afraid of? I’ll tell you: too many want to hire people they “like” and not people who are most qualified. Go bark up that tree if you Cons actually believe the words you speak.

Rollie, buddy; can’t speak for anyone else, but The Gotch sure appreciates your ostensibly earnest/well-intended attempts to provide a unique perspective.

That said, anyone who tells you the public sector (locally, leastways) only hires based on “best scores/fitness for the position” will lie to you about other things, as well…examples are far too numerous to mention, but let’s give ‘er a go.

Police Chief? After Koval announced his departure, the eminently qualified/home-grown/up_through_the ranks acting MPD Chief Vic Wahl was asked if he would pursue the job, he supplied the most evenly keeled, sincerely delivered, G-Rated F**K YOU! The Gotch has ever heard.

Funniest thing; seems current Chief Shon F. Barnes’ been keeping his Options Open, too, am I right?

      Anywho, MMSD Superintendent?

After the ruinously disastrous, none-too-soon departed Jennifer Cheat’em’s (sic) tenure?

Jilted by Matthew flipped_us_off Gutiérrez…then Carlton Jenkins retired…before he unretired.

I wasn’t talking about public safety management, I was talking about rank and file. I should have been more specific, but that’s what I meant by “a step down that road”. Yes, executive roles are subjective hiring processes. But an entry level police officer or firefighter, at least in Milwaukee, has a reasonably objective, merit-based hiring process based on the skills and attitudes that are necessary for successful job performance. Not a perfect process, but much more merit-based and objective than any private sector hiring process I know of.

This underscores the fact that management is generally not hired based on merit, and I assert that this is as true in the private sector as in the public. And this is the root of the lie that Cons are pushing in their crusade – they need to lie about how managers and leaders are actually chosen to make this play.

What do you say? Rally the public to institute objective hiring across the management sector of all US industry? Or just wherever a “liberal” has the job?
