Police are off the hook, too!
Shadayra Kilfoy-Flores said all the politically correct buzz words in an interview with WORT radio Friday 10-20-23. But her examples sounded like Conscience of a Conservative!
The chairman of the Police Civilian Oversight Board “is torn” about police body cameras, which progressives have stymied here in Madison WI, lest the devices exonerate police. She doesn’t want to defund the police. “That language is very harmful, we want reallocation of those funds for crime prevention.”
Not enough income redistribution! “When peoples’ needs are being met they are less likely to commit crime.”
Police are occupiers. “There is a huge militarization of the police, everywhere we see colonization … we see the excessive use of excessive force.”
She’s proud of expelling police resource officers from the city’s four main public high schools. She accuses teachers of racism.
“A lot of our children, they have the right to be angry, our black and brown children have a right to be angry, the way they’ve been treated from Day One in our school system.”
Those are direct quotes from her interview with fellow cop … adversary, Esty Dinur.
Progressive canon bumps up against real world
No question, Shadayra Kilfoy-Flores is eligible to join AOC’s Squad, write for The Nation, and sub for Joy Reid on MSNBC.
Except that the facts she put into evidence during Friday's radio interview would seem to contradict her politics!
She spoke of a boyfriend who once broke her jaw and eye socket. Police were helpful, she said, the district attorney brought only minor charges. Soft on crime?
Said Dane County is paying her and two other “volunteers” $20/hour to work with East high school students. They’re encouraging kids to pick up their litter. That’s called “responsibility.”
Was agnostic on police body-worn cameras, except in her case, “My having been shot at two weeks ago; it would have been helpful if more footage were available.”
Ah, yes. The attempted assassination of an outspoken Latina police critic! On 10-05-23, driving down Willy Street late at night, her automobile was shot up. (You Can’t Make This Up: one of the bullets hit the social justice center!) Shortly after the incident, she said:
I can’t help but be slightly paranoid thinking to possibly shut me up. I am after all the chair of Madison’s Police Civilian Oversight Board and have been a target for a number of angry white supremacists.
In the WORT interview last week, she admitted:
Because of having been the target many times of white supremacy I did not want to rule that out but police have told me after doing ballistics on those shell casings that they match the shell casings from other shootings, so they think it was potentially some young people that have been involved in other shootings.
— “A conversation with Shadayra Kilfoy-Flores”
Like maybe that shoot up at The Harmony apartments on 10-10-23? “It was other young people,” Kilfoy Flores acknowledged. “That’s the saddest part.” What’s more astounding, Kilfoy-Flores revealed of the 15-year-old girl who died: “She was targeted.” And shot 22 times. (That has not been reported elsewhere.) Three 14-year-old boys were also hit but survived. Police say 50 rounds in total were fired by five boys who arrived in an up-scale Lexus SUV at 8:30 p.m. (Inquiring minds want to know: What were their unmet needs?)
→ Police need our help to solve the case. And yes, more security cameras will be installed at the apartments. (Now there is an need duly met!)
“We have some really angry young people out there; what can we do to help them release that anger in productive ways?”
Blaska’s Bottom Line: How about volunteering at a senior center — after doing their school homework? How about recognizing that neither the schools, nor the police, nor angry white supremacists condemned that 15-year-old girl to die in a hail of bullets.

“Every Republican fervently believes that Trump was robbed in the 2020 election!”
Does that bother you, Dave?
Well branding every lunatic demand by today’s self-defined social justice warriors as “progressives” bothers me and lots of other real-life progressives in town who want no more to do with them than you with the MAGA hyenas.
Want a truce?
Well then, start calling those folks social-justice poseurs, but do not let them sully the proud history progressives have earned in America (enjoy your 40 hour week).
I’ll clean my side of the aisle, you clean yours.
Sure “MAGA” Dave.
Another Progressive not taking responsibility. Say it ain’t so!
grow up
It’s telling that you have to go back 80+ years to find a “win” to crow about.
And yes there are more recent good things but the problem is “Progressives “ don’t seem admit that not all their policies have had good long term results (single mothers, the BEP in MMSD).
Give me a group of “Let’s try this out and honestly evaluate it”Ives.
Hi One Eye,
Do progressives admit that not all their policies turn out for the good? Sure, in part, no doubt some live in denial.
But I think both sides of the political fence would prefer that the other not use a broad brush to lump them with those on their side of the fence who remain willfully blind in order to remain in constant high dungeon.
As to the so-called Behavior Education Plan (in most but not all its particulars … surprisingly some facets like Positive Behavior Coaches are good) every progressive that I know in Madison is totally distraught at the damage it has done to discipline by removing consequences under the cloak of so-called anti-racism — but of course I don’t hang around with many of the woker folks.
Single mothers, or more to your point, the overall question of dependency becomes a lot more complicated and, under analysis, that cuts both ways against each side’s shibboleths. Yes dependency is a side effect that can make the problem being addressed worse in the long run. There and on single moms you’re right to bemoan the left’s tsk-tsking moralizing that seeks to deny the right any claim to legitimate concerns about them. On the hand, grinding inequality has left too many children in abject poverty to the long term detriment of the country’s potential along with the human tragedy.
Wouldn’t it be great if people could talk together across the aisle again.
Good post Peter. The other aspect of the single mother problem is abortion. I shudder to think how much bigger that problem would be if abortion wasn’t an option.
“Our black and brown children have a right to be angry …” And it follows that this right gives them another right: to assault teachers, to bully their white classmates, to disobey police and other authority figures. To look into the minds of people like Kilfoy-Flores is to see the source of everything that has made our schools dangerous and sysfunctional.
That’s kinda the point, Steven: Progressives need to grow up and take responsibility. Progressives are like children: it’s always someone else’s fault seasoned with a dash of moral relativism.
