Is public health a threat to democracy

… and public safety?

The Democrat(ic) governor of New Mexico may have just turned her state Republican.  Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham unilaterally, unconstitutionally, and illegally banned citizens from carrying — concealed or not — all firearms in her state! Even admitted that it would have no effect on criminals, thereby confirming every open-carry Second Amendment absolutist’s paranoia.

The good progressive based her diktat on the science of public health. Significantly, she issued her imperial order jointly with the New Mexico secretary of health. They declared that “Gun violence and drug abuse currently constitute statewide public health emergencies.” The magic words “public health” and “emergency” sufficed to repeal the concealed-carry law, first passed in 2001, as well as the state’s open-carry law. 

The deplorable citizens of New Mexico (the land of disenchantment) openly defied governor and health secretary by parading their guns openly on the streets of Albuquerque. Grass roots elected officials also rebelled. 

“How can I, as a sheriff, tell him to put his firearms away and not be able to protect himself?’ asked Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen.

Don’t need no legislature

Blaska Policy Werkes posits that public health is the newest and best follow-the-science despotism, jockeying for suzerainty with environmentalism. (We write this as one whose motion merged the Dane County and City of Madison public health departments.) 

It was not happenstance that when the Communist party in Spain fell along with the Berlin Wall, its ornery membership joined the Green party. The commies merely traded the supposed science of Marxist dialectical materialism for another non debatable cudgel — the environment. Environmentalism means not improving that killer highway because of some obscure snail. (Remember the hoo ha over constructing Madison’s south Beltline bypass?)

Public health officials — Dr. Fauci was their poster boy — shut down schools and promoted mask wearing. The masks were useless and the children, it is now apparent, were permanently harmed. According to the WI Institute for Law & Liberty, school districts that closed schools to in-person instruction saw a drop in English proficiency of nearly 2% and nearly 5% in math. Kids were always the least susceptible to Covid 19, anyway, as the National Institutes of Health now acknowledges.

Here in Madison WI, crime is said to be a public health problem that should be isolated from the criminal justice system.

Increasingly, violence is being understood as akin to an infectious disease needing a data-driven, coordinated, long-term public health response like those used to fight smoking or HIV/AIDS.

Blaska’s Bottom Line: But then, what isn’t a public health emergency? Crime, racism, poverty, illiteracy, gambling, alcoholism, smoking, teen pregnancy, homelessness, gerrymandering … So why not unilaterally ban law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves! Can Tony Evers be far behind?!
