Plus Denmark goes all-Trump and
Madison teachers pay a pittance for their health insurance
What have we been saying? The Left’s obsession with identity politics is killing American education.
So, good news today. The Trump administration is lifting the Obama policy that that called on universities to consider race as a factor in diversifying their campuses, the New York Times reports.
“The Supreme Court has steadily narrowed the ways that schools can consider race when trying to diversify their student bodies. But it has not banned the practice.”
A highly anticipated case is pitting Harvard against Asian-American students who say one of the nation’s most prestigious institutions has systematically excluded some Asian-American applicants to maintain slots for students of other races. That case is clearly aimed at the Supreme Court.
This will drive our liberal-progressive-socialist acquaintances barking mad. It is one more deliverable from Donald Trump. The President and Betsy DeVos need to go the full nine yards and cease asking for and refuse to accept race-based data in education, crime, and other fields — including the next census. Wisconsin should do the same.
You are now in Denmark, not Raqqa
Add Germany to the growing list of European countries going all Trump on immigration. Angela Merkel is being forced to take a hard line to save her ruling coalition. Even Denmark, valhalla to Bernie Sanders’ socialists, is introducing laws to regulate life in 25 low-income and heavily Muslim areas, saying that if families don’t willingly adapt to Danish culture, they should be compelled to.
Children from neighborhoods that the government describes as “ghettos” will receive mandatory instruction in “Danish values,” including the traditions of Christmas and Easter, and in the Danish language. Noncompliance could result in an end to welfare payments.
Back in the day at Sun Prairie high school, we called it “Civics.”
Madison teachers get special treatment
Statewide, public school teachers pay an average 12% of their health insurance premiums, as suggested by Act 10. Not in Madison, where teachers pay only 3%. Tells you what you need to know about all those referenda on blowing the doors off state spending restraints.
Sun Prairie teachers pay 18%, Edgerton 17%, Deerfield 16%, New Glarus & Waunakee 15% and virtually everyone else 12% except Stoughton, Waterloo, and Belleville 10%. Oh, and Jeff Simpson’s Monona Grove, 5%.
Put in real dollars, the average Madison teacher pays $41.35 a month for the family plan compared to $181.10 for teachers in the Middleton-Cross Plains school district, who pay 12%. On an annual basis: $496 for the Madison teacher; $2,173 for the Middleton teacher.
Blaska’s Bottom Line: Real diversity is not race or even ethnicity but in the flowering of competing ideas. Under Obama, the racial divide grew worse, not better.
