It is a cautionary tale of what can happen to an organization and to a society that goes Woke. Not content with being green, the Sierra Club embraced “social justice” and proceeded to devour itself in backbiting, blame-gaming, and inquisitions.
Membership in the environmental club hemorrhaged by more than half in just five years. It is $40 million in the hole and riven by lawsuits and counter-suits.
Don’t blame Trump and MAGA. The organization of tree huggers was riding high when it decided to tap into the social justice movement the year Trump first took office. Sierra Club “tore itself apart,” reports The New York Times, progenitor of the 1619 Project. Sierra Club president Ben Jealous, former head of the NAACP, promised to make the environmental advocate “the most progressive and inclusive employers in the movement.” (WI Sierra Club is headquartered at Madison’s “pooping and popping” Social Justice Center.)

As with DEI grifters everywhere (including the University of Wisconsin-Madison), Jealous hired “several longtime associates at high salaries.” Staffers began filing sexual harassment complaints against each other. Sierra Club issued an “equity language guide …”
… which warned employees to be cautious about using the words “vibrant” and “hardworking,” because they reinforced racist tropes. “Lame-duck session” was out, because “lame” was offensive. Even “Americans” should be avoided, the guide said, because it excluded non-U.S. citizens.
After the murder of George Floyd in 2020, the group called for defunding the police and making reparations for slavery. Took sides with Palestine over Israel. Sierra Club paleontologists uncovered “deeply harmful racist stereotypes” founder John Muir had employed in his writings — back in the 1860s. As with Fredric March at UW-Madison, Muir was erased from its history, like those old Bolsheviks “disappeared” from photographs with Stalin.
Accusations of long-ago sexual misconduct were levied against volunteers, who were Investigated, Kafka-esque, without being told who or why. Its fortunes depleted, Sierra Club fired Mr. Jealous in July 2020. He, of course, played the race card, alleging racial discrimination.

Progressives are woke for the same reason the Puritans were bitter, repressive, censorious, self-righteous a$$holes. Both felt (feel) that their worldview is the only one with merit and that anyone who thinks otherwise deserves to be cast into outer darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. Oh, and they both loved (love) witch hunts. It took a while, but the original Puritans were consigned to the dust-heap of history. Let’s hope the same fate befalls today’s Puritans–sooner rather than later.
Interesting historical analogy between the old Puritans and the current “progressive” movement, Gary. It can be said that the American Puritan ethic and wokesterism have survived by means of inducing guilt. The Puritans decried sex as the original sin; current progressives feed off of egalitarianism. Independent thinking makes them nervous, and if you disagree with that crowd, you will pay. Better mind your pronouns, or else.
Yes, I should have included ‘guilt-inducing’ in that list of adjectives. I’d say that independent thinking doesn’t just make today’s progressive puritans nervous, it drives them into a blind rage, followed by sanctimonious denunciations and various acts of retribution.
Any organization needs to focus on core mission. Otherwise, a wide focus really makes success unlikely. The whole idea to correct all precieved issues and injustice is insane at the core.
What elected Trump the 1st time was Hillary Clinton. What elected Trump the second time was Joe Biden. What’s going to destroy New York is Democrats, the same thing that will destroy our country if left unchecked. All this other Bull Shit is just that, Bull Shit.
It’s like the Gay community. Now they have so many other causes it’s hard to tell what they stand for.
