Keeping an uncivil tongue

When others go low, he goes for the family jewels.

President Trump says he is bypassing this year’s Super Bowl being played on the West Coast — too far to go, says the man on Air Force One. A shame because even violent sports like football demand fair play.

The Seattle Seahawks likely will start Tariq Woolen, even though their cornerback’s unsportsmanlike conduct almost cost his team the Super Bowl. With the Seahawks nursing a 31-20 lead in the qualifying game, Woolen broke up a pass, forcing the Rams to punt the ball away — except Woolen negated his great play by taunting his opponents. Stupid, classless — and against the rules. The refs threw the penalty flag and returned the ball to the other team plus 15 yards. On the very next play, a Rams receiver caught a touchdown pass (over Woolen, as it turned out).

The NFL defines taunting as “acts or words that may cause ill will between teams.”

Why do we expect so much less from the President of the United States? Here is the Commander In Chief punching down to — and threatening — a musician (!!!) for criticizing government policy. Bruce Springsteen “is a pushy, obnoxious JERK. … mentally incompetent … dumb as a rock … [who] ought to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT.”

Does the narcissist in chief even comprehend the irony that his ALL-CAPS rant is a self-description?

Who does this persuade?

What is the point of demeaning good neighbor Canada as “the 51st state”?

“Trump’s jibes are wearing thin for many of Europe’s leaders,” the BBC reports. “Many people – from Brussels to Berlin to Paris – will have found his [Davos] speech to be insulting, overbearing and inaccurate.”

Setting the tone

Reverse TDS sufferers, eager to prove their sycophancy, instruct us RINOs to whistle past their man’s graveyard of manners and see the big picture: secure borders, taking out Iran’s nukes, a booming stock market. Laudable achievements, all. But what does it say that Tom Homan makes a better case (as one example) for immigration enforcement than the whiner in chief?

There is a bullying coarseness to everything the President touches and not all the gold gilt in Washington can hide it. His gratuitous bad mouthing is rubbing America’s political discourse raw. Taking their cues, MAGA demands life imprisonment for Don Lemon, deportation for Ilhan Omar, handcuffs for Barack Obama. Make America Angry Again has enemies, not adversaries. Disagreement is treason.

American presidents set a tone. Some do fireside chats, this one pollutes the atmosphere with vengeful rants. A nation’s tone — the way it talks about itself and to others — is more substantial than any big or beautiful bill. It is the milieu permitting Alex Pretti to kick out the taillights on an immigration enforcement vehicle; the impetus for Greg Bovino to hit the streets as if Minneapolis were Omaha Beach. It is the fuel that burns down Kenosha, the oxygen for chanting “Hang Mike Pence.”

Tone, spirit, zeitgeist— call it what you will. The 19th Century British conservative Edmund Burke used the term “manners.”

Manners, he wrote, “are of more importance than laws. Upon them, in a great measure, the laws depend. The law touches us but here and there, and now and then. Manners are what vex or soothe, corrupt or purify, exalt or debase, barbarize or refine us, by a constant, steady, uniform, insensible operation, like that of the air we breathe in. They give their whole form and color to our lives. According to their quality, they aid morals, they supply them, or they totally destroy them.” — David Brooks in the NY Times

‘The greatest character of the age’

The first president (and still the greatest, Mr. Trump) thought it important to set the right tone. “George Washington’s first days in office were dominated by seemingly trivial symbolic issues that spoke to larger questions about the character of the new government,” Ron Chernow records. He would be called “Mr. President,” not “Your Highness.”

Even in death, Washington never lapsed into self-absorption and remained singularly attuned to other people’s moods, showing the same sensitivity that had made him a uniquely effective political leader. … Washington died in a manner that befit his life: with grace, dignity, self possession and a manifest regard for others.Washington, a Life, Ron Chernow

Blaska’s Bottom Line: A truly great President summons our better angels and binds up our wounds. They do not cripple the national psyche with a thousand points of petulance. The likes of Ron Johnson, the Speaker of the House, and every local Republican club need to throw the yellow penalty flag.

Oh what we must endure to avoid the destructive policies of Democratic presidents! Yeah, Trump puts out embarrassing posts and needs to shut down his ridiculous barrages on Truth Social. This is the penance that we put up with in order to have strong borders, better economic growth, no mandates, less government, and no tax increases. In a perfect world, someone in the White House or the GOP Congress (anyone?) would say something to him that would get him to change his stripes. Maybe Melania?

Yeah, he did, on an I.C.E. vehicle about a week before he was shot.

If our president thinks Brucie is obnoxious, I can hardly wait to hear what he has to say about tonight’s Grammy Awards. “And the prize for the most self-absorbed, sanctimonious, foul-mouthed anti-Trump rant goes to ….”

I know it is not nice but these bastards deserve all he can serve. Springsteen has been hating conservatism all his career so he organize his zombies to do the same. Buying Greenland woke up the elite European aristocracy to think they maybe they should be proactive instead of laid-back with their fingers crossed thinking the US would bail them out. What would George Bush do?

I don’t know who he won over, but he has established the fact he is not going to be intimated by RINOs and other Trump haters. He doesn’t care what you think of him and he believes he has enough support that it doesn’t make a difference. He has been impeached 3 times, in court for four years, and has been called a pedophile by the top and the low town barkers everyday and even on Sundays. What has he got to loose, if you hate him you are going to hate him no matter what. He’s doubling down and giving it his best shot, why is cabinet still with him? They don’t need him, but yet they support him. Tell me why they would risk their reputation on hanging with him? These people are smarter than you are.

Is Blaska’s brilliance lost on pioneering609d4d5a89? Did his message not penetrate his MAGA force field? The President of the United States did not show “he was not going to be intimated by RINOs and other Trump haters.” He shows that his adversaries can GET to him every time. He shows that they can push his buttons and that he has more buttons than a circus clown. Their merest poke provokes wails of anguish, bared teeth, a tempest of sound and fury, ultimately signifying nothing except a comically short fuse, a school yard vocabulary, and a gummed up ALL-CAPS key.

But pioneering609d4d5a89 thinks if his man gets down with the pigs he’ll come out clean!

    1. David Blaska Avatar

Expat, you don’t get it, do you? He’s not hurting me. He’s hurting conservatism. He’s hurting the Republican brand — not with his actions, which are more than defensible, but with his political tourette syndrome. FDR would explain why I.C.E. is in Minneapolis and how Joe Biden and Tim Walz are ultimately responsible for the deaths. How we’re after the criminals but the governor won’t let us in the jails so we have to resort to the streets. How the mayor won’t offer crowd control. In a state that invited the looting of the public treasury.

If you think the infallible man’s messaging is working, tell me — on the dolly — how the off-year elections are going. Our side (I think it’s yours, too) is losing Republican seats! Show me — on the dolly — Trump’s approval ratings. He’s more upside down than mother’s pineapple cake.

I belong to no organized political party. I am a conservative.
Trump’s best achievement (overdoses and murders down 20%) was beating the hell out of the Uniparty Swamp. The Bush/Romney/McCain RINOs were barely distinguishable from the Democrats. Paul Ryan ran as a man with a plan to balance the budget then never met an Omnibus Spending Bill he didn’t like.
Republicans agreed to enrich every other country at our expense; to fund endless winless wars then lose to Obama/Biden who would leave vast amounts of armaments for ISIS in Iraq and the Taliban in Afghanistan. All this while racking up deficits as far as the eye can see. The Republicans lost education, culture, the media industrial complex, race relations, entertainment and the NFL. Why? Because they are losers. They can be cowed by people saying they are RAYcist, phobeaphobic yada, yada yada. You think Trump gives a damn about approval ratings and BS polls?
He does not because he is not a republican. And neither am I.

I’ve said before, I wished he’d act a bit more presidential but, at the end of the day, policy trumps image for me. I’d like both but will take what I can get. The content of the book is more important than the cover and, so far, I like the content. Trump haters take him literally but not seriously, Trump supporters take him seriously but not literally.

It is so stunning for me to know I grew up in the era of Gerald Ford–who was sworn into office when I was still in grade school–to the time when a low-educated and buffoonish personality now sits in the White House. Ford is recalled for standing up to his lout of a biological father and turning away money for the honor of taking his step-dad’s name.
Meanwhile, Trump mocked a disabled reporter and admits to sexual predatory ways. (You have the photo posted of the mimicking of the disabled man.) The question remains how so many of our fellow citizens willfully embraced Trump’s lack of character and crude mean-spirted actions and elected them to reside in the Oval Office? It is as if every lesson our parents and grandparents extolled were never heard. They clearly were not heeded.

“The question remains how so many of our fellow citizens willfully embraced Trump’s lack of character and crude mean-spirted actions and elected them to reside in the Oval Office?”

Greg, as many here and elsewhere have indicated, they did not and do not embrace Trump’s lack of character. Rather, they were fed up with:

      – Government-sanctioned invasion at our borders
      – Sanctuary cities defying federal immigration laws
      – Illegal immigrants killing American citizens
      – DEI madness infesting public and private institutions
      – Backward terrorist states playing us for suckers and cowards
      – Cities being burned and looted and bystanders being terrorized by urban savages
      – Calls to disrespect and defund law enforcement
      – Activist educators saying they know what’s better for kids than parents
      – Activist DA’s and bad actors making show trials against political adversaries for publicity stunts
      – Europe expecting us to do their work for them in dealing with Putin
      – Democrats refusing to own the cover up of Biden’s mental state
      – Democrats abandoning democracy by appointing an unpopular candidate that got no primary votes

Despite all his blatant character flaws, Trump was still preferable to many than four more years of all that BS.

Even Michael Moore understood the electorate the first time Trump was elected president. Moore said, ‘Trump is a hand grenade thrown into the DC establishment.’
And now some people complain, ‘But hand grenades are icky and loud and make a mess. Why couldn’t he throw a cupcake?’
