Another damn election to worry about!
The new year has started with most unwelcome bangs — terrorist attacks in New Orlean’s crowded French Quarter and the exploding truck outside Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. This follows the assassination of that insurance exec on the streets of New York 12-04-24 and more locally, the tragic shooting at Abundant Life Christian School here in Madison 12-16-24.
And law enforcement is the problem?
It is if you are Progressive Dane — the local political party that’s to the Left of A.O.C.! As much as the Democrats’ presidential nominee Kamala Harris ran as a former lock ‘em up prosecutor (however dubiously), Progressive Dane continues to Cry Racism! Supports Open Borders! and wants to Defund the Cops!
We bring this to your attention, dear Platinum Subscriber, because seven of our Madison alders are Progressive Dane and at least five of them are running for re-election. Those latter are John Duncan, Mike Verveer, MGR Govindarajan, Nikki Conklin, and Yannette Figueroa Cole. The last is most egregious because she is 1) president of the Madison Common Council and 2) (mis)represents the Stately Manor in Orchard Ridge (also Meadowood, Nakoma, Arbor Hills, and Dunns’ Marsh/Allied) here in District 10.
The election is off another three months, on April 1, but the deadline for candidates to file their paperwork is January 7 — next Tuesday!
Fortunately, Ald. Figueroa Cole has already attracted two opponents with decent credibility: former Ald. Sheri Carter — a real supporter of public safety! — and Lisa Veldran, former neighborhood association president in Meadowood.
White supremacy — INGRAINED!
Progressive Dane’s recently adopted agenda is diversity, equity, and inclusion straight out of Ibram X. Kendi and Robin DiAngelo (creator of “white fragility”). The very first plank of their platform:
1. Making all policing decisions through an anti-racist lens, to dismantle the white supremacy ingrained within policing and public safety policy.
PD is hip-hip-hooray for Shadayra Kilfoy Flores’ Police Civilian Review Board. They join Freedom Inc. and The Capital Times in expelling cops from of schools. They’re for “Increasing data collection on racial disparities.” PD continues to mealy mouth (verb, transitive) police body-worn cameras.
The two Progressive Dane incumbents not running are Marsha Rummel, District 6 out of the Willy Street area and (possibly) Juliana Bennet #2 on campus. (She hasn’t declared.) Which is not to say that other PD candidates are lurking among the 21 challengers who have filed in the 20 seats. (A goodly number!) Or that others of the current alders don’t vote the PD line without paying membership dues.
Other incumbents not seeking re-election are Nasra Wehelie #7, Jael Currie #16, and UPDATE 01-03-25: the girl-crazed Charles Myadze #18 apparently IS running for re-election. He was circulating nomination petitions as of Tuesday 12-31-24!

In most places in this country, I’d encourage the Progressive Dane to run their woke mouths all day, as reasonable people would shun their rhetoric to the point of rendering them politically irrelevant. Unfortunately, Madison has enough true believers to keep them in power and dangerous.
