The day after Election Day 2024. So we’ve got that going for us. Our sin against political correctness was calling Madison’s public school system “Woke.” If it ain’t woke, then it sure is broke. Just try sending a member of a “protected class” to the principal’s office!
After November 5, can we be done with identity politics? Donald Trump won 12 of the 14 counties near the Mexican border, up from five in 2016. A.O.C. can pretend to cry all she wants, but tell the (legal) Mexican-Americans who vote there that they have to live with the chaos of her border policy.
Turns out that people who identify (see what we did there?) as black or white (we do not capitalize), hispanic or asian, male and/or female, young and old, urban and rural, Christian or Muslim, want essentially the same thing. No, not broadband in the sticks. Not absolution from college debt. Not sex change operations for criminals. Not even more free stuff.
It’s the culture, stupid
What do they want (aside from a bridge fixed here and a pothole filled there)? The real rainbow coalition of Americans wants safe streets, affordable housing, a full grocery cart, schools that work, rewarding jobs, lower taxes. And a little R.E.S.P.E.C.T. As important as is the economy, we still believe it’s the culture, stupid. Maybe we can quit shaming men and stop treating women as uber-victims. Can we cancel the whole victim culture? If Norman Rockwell were alive, he’d add a fifth panel to his Freedom from Fear and Want series: Freedom from Hectoring. It might look something like this:
Freedom from the shamers. Freedom from guilt-mongers like the UW-Madison’s Shiva Bidar-Sielaff and other DEI thought police who can wreck your career, like any Soviet commissar, over a single deviance from the party line. Freedom from America haters like MSNBC’s Elie Mystal, who whines:

Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, and Democrats in general were wrong on the big stuff. But also, we argue here, on attitude. America in general grew tired of their pecksniffery. (Great word!) Hey, this RINO is trying to understand it, too. Seems Donald Trump, felon and boor, was a huge, crane-mounted middle finger to the arbiters of P.C. The Insurrectionist in Chief. America’s Defendant in the Dock.
Blaska takes solace that Trump and J.D. were and are being called fascists, too. As well as racists and misogynists. Once upon a time, we might have protested indignantly, presented our bona fides like war medals, plead that we marched with Father Groppi back in the day, yada yada yada. No more. Your name calling only means you disagree. God bless you merry, gentlemen.
My college town and state capital are the exceptions that prove the rule. Madison WI remains a redoubt of progressive puff’n’stuff. City leaders who chatter about affordable housing pushed through three referenda — of $22 million, $100 million, and $507 million — to raise property taxes. Maybe University Heights and Nakoma can afford it, not so much Burr Oaks and Darbo-Worthington.
Blaska’s Bottom Line: When college graduates walk out on commencement speaker Jerry Seinfeld, you know the elite has lost its sense of humor. So maybe Donald Trump got elected because of that joke about Puerto Rico. Didn’t seem to hurt him among latinos.
If the term “Woke” has become a pejorative even in Madison WI, perhaps there’s hopey changey after all!

Oh, I have been called them all. Racist, Nazi, Socialist, Communist, liberal, conservative, etc–by folks on the left and by folks like Lil c, who canceled me when I suggested that his comments might be of interest to Homeland Security, or by “Christian” Bill Elmhorst, who never read the 9th Commandment or Paul’s letter to the church at Phillipi. A Pharisee. They all accused me of supporting Kamala. Then my liberal friends accused me of supporting Trump, even though my pretty face has been on billboards across Sconnie Land, denying His Orangeness. It was part of a conservative-against-Trump effort. People don’t know how to deal with people like me, who do not fit into a preconceived box. Yet they often exhort folks to think for themselves, which actually means, think like they do. I am content being the ONLY one who has thought for himself. Well, Blaska too…..

Democrats didn’t learn their lesson after 2016 and they won’t even as they emerge from amid the wreckage of Hurricane Donald in 2024. Eliminate the Dept of Education, tariffs, National Sales Tax, get rid of ACA and put worm brain in charge of health care (now there’s a concept.) Biden/Harris was the most Authoritarian administration of my lifetime. It’s no surprise Bret Weinstein backed the Unity coalition behind Trump. Years ago he said it’s not left v right, Authoritarianism is the real danger. Look up what happened at Evergreen College if you’re not familiar with Bret. Scary stuff and much of it is on video.
Had it out with a true centrist and a no longer trumper last weekend, the room got very loud, but the best part about it never, ever turned personal and once everything was said that needed to be said it was over. Bourbon was poured, cribbage cards dealt and we shook hands. It is fine, living, working and raising a family in Dane county in the age of cancellation puts many on there heels. Things had to be argued and said, but we both agreed we hoped it was going to be a landslide decisive win on either side. So we could just be done with media onslaught, by air, by mail and sea, lol.
