Really well written Mr. Blaska. You have clearly illustrated what the ‘Extremes’ can’t see. That they are basically the same, only the letterhead changes.
The question is can the reasonable Center take control of all of this? As a self described ‘left leaning centrist’, I feel that I have a lot more in common with my many right wing ‘centrist’ friends than with any of the nutjob extremists on either end. How can we lower the temp and begin governing from the reasonable, respectable middle?

But how? is a good question. I think the only way is working first locally and personally. It’s caring more about how we carry ourselves instead of worrying about all of this other garbage. I couldn’t give a rat’s a$$ what some news director at ABC says, anymore than I give on bucket of warm spit what Hannity or Racheal (or the rest of them) spewed out last night. Paying too much attention to the provocateurs is in so many ways exposing ourselves to base manipulation.
Get centered on truth, respect and constructive action. I read this blog a lot. And so many times arguments devolve into ignoring the issue at hand and instead going on a hunt to prove how hypocritical the other side is. There’s no shortage of hypocrisy on either side, so it’s not hard to find. And eventually it just further devolves into a big circle jerk of ‘what aboutism’ and bias confirmation.
There are a lot of reasonable, kind and good hearted people working hard on both sides in this country. I for one intend on actively looking for them instead of constantly screaming foul and playing the victim.
Just one man’s thoughts on how the center can start to function again.

Hypothetical question: suppose a person had to choose between public expression of political or social opinions, and being allowed onto an airliner? Don’t say anything Rachel Maddow would not approve of, if you want to get on that Southwest flight. What would most people do?
Hypothetical question: suppose a person had an online business site, and in order to be allowed to remain hosted, they would be required to keep a banner at the top of the site accusing Trump of something – “TRUMP IS A NAZI”, for example. Put up the banner, or lose your site. What would most people do?
We might just be living in interesting times.

Why is this news all of a sudden? The Capitol, the Square, and State Street were boarded up from spring 2020 thru the election. Some of the plywood was removed after the Electoral College voted.
It was obvious that everything remained boarded up for much of 2020 for two main reasons–
— Police somewhere might shoot someone for resisting arrest
— Trump might win, which if that had happened the entire country would be in flames today
Nice to see Sleep Skeletor finally giving some attention to public order all of a sudden.

David, I may not agree with your views on Trump, but it is your guaranteed right to express them. You don’t need anyone’s permission. People who don’t like what you have to say have the option of not following you. Any conservative who tries to shut you down is no better than a leftist fascist.
That said, most of the warfare originates from the left. This is not just bias, either. Look at recent behavior.
Who perpetrated acts of terrors in our cities all summer? Who remained silent about them or even cheered them on? Who’s purging conservative voices from social media & search engine algorithms, canceling book contracts, and creating lists that will make it difficult for Trump supporters to find work? Which politicians told crowds to “get in their faces” and set up bail funds for the rioters?
While nobody is excusing last week, that deviant behavior doesn’t even close to what the left has perpetrated. Let’s not pretend it’s even close to being equal.

And weren’t the media helpful in setting the narrative. For all of 2020 the word “riot” was verboten. Those were protests in Seattle, where they occupied a neighborhood for weeks. Those were protests in Minneapolis, where 1,500 properties were destroyed or damaged to the tune of half a BILLION dollars. Those were protests in Portland, where it went on for months and people died. Those were protests in Madison. They were “mostly peaceful protests” in Kenosha where the damage totaled $50 million.
But since last week, it is the word “protest” that has been banished.

Every single conservative I follow has denounced last Wednesday. Still waiting for leftist leadership to call out last summer’s “protests.”
Biden wants unity? As long as the Dems continue to employ double standards, like downplaying last summer while using last Wednesday to dismiss conservative concerns, I don’t see how that’s going to happen.

That’s just one example. Thousands of peaceful, conservative minded social media accounts have been shut down or purged. Corporate America has united to punish any GOP senator who stood up for election integrity, and to shut down Parler. Simon & Schuster canceled Senator Josh Hawley’s book deal because he dared question election results; they accused him of being seditious. Google algorithms give preference to liberals, as does most of the media.
The war on conservatives is very real. It’s not an equal fight by any means, and to suggest that is intellectually dishonest.
Which is why I disagree with the title of this blog post. Had Trump won the election and liberal voices shut down, leftist meltdown would have been very real. Aside from Wednesday’s actions and a few rogue “conservatives” we’re nothing like them.

Conservative Democracy is people controlling the government. Progressive Socialism is government controlling the people. Anarchism is chaos. Most people fall into one of the first two groups, and true anarchists are very rare. What is not in short supply though, are people with a psycho/sexual fascination with Violence and Destruction. Some want to be active participants, some initiate things- then watch. These VD “addicts” are found across the political spectrum.
Progressives and the entire media attempted to leverage this fact to incite a civil war in 2020. This attempt, based on a false premis…, NO a Bold-Faced Lie, was the story of the year – not Covid.
Criminals commit crimes, cops catch them. Cops sometimes restrain them in seemingly cruel ways when they refuse to comply. Every year a small number of criminals die when they do this – and a small number of cops die when they don’t.
“George Floyd” was an isolated incident, hand picked by the media, and portrayed as a deliberate murder. Protests were expected, and occurred. What should have been a day of “voicing concerns” and “calling for change” turned into days, weeks, months of increasingly more violent behavior. All of this was driven by a breathless media, – and carried out by Progressive administrations and citizenry (eager to be seen as “allies”), malleable minority members, and of course, the Left’s version of VD “addicts”.
Did I really say “incite a civil war”? Since NOTHING they did improved ANYTHING in a single “Black Life”, I would assume the whole thing was conducted to intimidate, and possibly provoke, so-called “racists and fascists”, (the rest of the population) to respond in kind.
Example: Block the square (no response?), block the whole Downtown (still no response?), block the freeway, run in front of cars, threaten drivers (surely SOMEONE will get irate enough to drive into and over people!!!).
Example: Curse, spit at, and berate armed cops (no response?), shoot pyros and hurl bricks at them, destroy their vision with lasers (still no response?), then BURN them ALIVE ( surely they will shoot SOMEONE or at least break ranks and start to beat people!!!).
Example: Terrorize innocent citizens, destroy their businesses, take away their town, call them racists and fascists (and then demand fealty to the “cause”), threaten to “take it to their neighborhoods”. (surely SOMEONE will get a gun and kill some people).
The carnage never happened. Our violence and destruction “addicts” (despite predictions), never showed up. The Right held rallies, picked up the litter afterwards, and were careful to not park on the grass. While the Left burned, and looted, and left destruction in their path. It could have ended quite differently. The media was positioned to get the “story of their lives”. (MUCH bigger than the “mass murdering terrorist” Kyle Rittenhouse) Some “Black Lives” would have been lost “for the cause” (and antifas), the Right would be discredited, political power for the Left secured, “ends” would justify “means” and the money would have flowed in.
Despite there having never been a “battle”, with the election Progressives feel that they have won the “war”, and are planning for “mop up” operations. I have to believe that what we are now seeing is solely aimed at intimidation and to provoke a violent response.
(FYI – I’m not a rocket scientist, nor is this rocket science)

Let me make this as clear as possible so there’s no misunderstanding:
Unprovoked or not, last week’s events were heinous, and the perpetrators should be punished as the law allows.
Likewise, the leftist anarchists responsible for last summer’s riots need to be punished as the law allows.

Edit to last sentence:
“Likewise, the riots that lasted all summer were heinous, and the perpetrators should be punished as the law allows.”
Last summer’s leftist-originated riots were more destructive (thousands of people lost everything) and deadly, and they were ongoing. The melee at the Capital lasted but a few hours. Not defending it, but to say that these events were equal is dishonest.

Just to be clear, the above post is not about last week, though it applies. It is a comment on the nature of some human beings, and how that can be exploited. Anyone on the right with a V+D “addiction” has had more than enough “provocation” this past year, “justified?”–never!!! Understandable? let’s say predictable. There has been more outrage over a short incident last week (that’s already cleaned up), than the blocks of burned-out buildings that still stand.

“Dead skunk in the middle of the road,

and he’s stinkin’ to high heaven.”
You don’t want to be middle of the road, because you take abuse and get run over from both sides. So, let’s go to the ultimate source, … The Book. In Rev. 3:15, John writes: “I know thy ‘werkes’, that thou art neither hot nor cold: I WOULD thou were cold or hot. (16) So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spit you out of my mouth.”
You gotta stand for something, or you’ll fall for anything.
Besides, God hates a coward.
Bless your little heart.

Your premise is that in order to stand for something, you have to be extreme. I disagree with that. You can stand for truth and mercy and reconciliation. You can stand for recognizing the innate value of the person across from you. You can stand for respect and kindness. None of this requires being extreme nor does it require constant agreement. Violence begets more violence just like animosity and demagoguery.
Stop trolling for outrage, it’s way too easy to find and it does no good.

Madison1218,
What is your idea of “extreme”?
For me, pushing back is not one in the same as extremism or violence. The Constitution guarantees each of us the right to express ourselves freely and passionately. With that, of course, we have the responsibility to exercise these rights lawfully & peacefully.
Exercising respect and kindness are values we should all aspire to. Unfortunately, there are people on this planet, many of them in Big Tech, media, politics, and board rooms, who don’t see it this way. They lie, manipulate, are dishonest, and create false narratives for personal gain; and they will use your kindness against you.
Respect needs to be earned. In my mind, these people have not earned it. Thus it is my American and God-given right to push back (within the confines of the law) against that which I perceive as harmful.

Of course we should all stand up for what we believe. I’m not saying that we should all join hands and sing songs and ignore our differences.
What I’m saying is that we should make our arguments to stand on their own two feet without having to also belittle, dismiss or accuse others. Elevate the discourse instead of inciting outrage. (Not accusing you personally of anything, just making general statements.)
If something is wrong, it is wrong. And constantly adding a ‘what about’ at least implies that you see some level of justification. The old, “yes this is wrong, but it’s not as bad as this other thing that they did”. That just gets us nowhere and it reads like cheap justification.
What’s my definition of extreme? Well, I guess I have to fall back on the old line that I don’t know exactly where the line is, but I can sure tell when it’s been crossed. Here are some examples:
-Making a joke about Ms. Babbitt being shot and killed last week. – extreme (by the way, this one happened right here on these pages.)
-Calling our Vice President Elect a whore. – extreme (also happens here)
-Justifying the riots last summer in Madison. – extreme
-Assigning malevolent motives to everyone we disagree with. – extreme
-Gross generalizations about whole groups of people demonizing millions of fellow Americans. (happens here all the time.)
I don’t know. I’m just really struggling to find a way for us all to get some perspective, show some human concern and mercy, argue respectfully and then have a beer and agree that the Packers winning the Superbowl this year would be a sign that God truly loves America.

Madison1218,
I agree wholeheartedly that the ideal is to argue ideas minus the incessant vitriol. I would love that!
Rejoicing that someone got killed as a “gotcha” to the other side is absolutely depraved. How much hate does someone have in their heart to express this publicly, some posting with smiley emoticons and all? These are people I would never find myself associating with!
We Americans treat each other like dirt, and it’s got to stop; it’s not sustainable and is killing our individual and collective souls and doing nothing to help us progress as a nation.
A couple thoughts on what you wrote:
“Assigning malevolent motives to everyone we disagree with. – extreme”
It’s not the disagreement part that I have an issue with (dissent is healthy). It’s the manipulation, lies, and hostility I can’t stand.
Given today’s level of hostility and tribal behavior, it’s difficult NOT to feel defensive, and it’s increasingly difficult to trust. Hopefully that will change.
“-Gross generalizations about whole groups of people demonizing millions of fellow Americans. (happens here all the time.)”
I think at least some of this comes from social media. But you’re right; most of us are complex individuals, and it’s just as limiting to judge others based solely on political affiliation as it is on physical identifiers.
“The old, “yes this is wrong, but it’s not as bad as this other thing that they did”. That just gets us nowhere and it reads like cheap justification.”
I think most people want to feel that the playing field is even and that one side isn’t receiving favortism. This is human nature, and it’s been intensified because of media’s and tech’s mostly one-sided coverage of the news. People feel jilted and unheard.
“I’m just really struggling to find a way for us all to get some perspective, show some human concern and mercy, argue respectfully.”
That’s a noble desire. Good for you! One thing that has helped me is realizing that I can’t control other people. There are over 300 million people in this nation and we’re not going to change things overnight. I can only strive to do my personal best in any given situation.

The hive-minded #GetTrump Ms. Media has turned the protest, ridiculously, into a coup attempt.
The Insurrection Lie maintains that a bare-chested-horn-helmet-wearning-organic-food-eating-global-warming-activist seized the Capitol January 6 on President Trump’s orders.
This joins The Russia Lie and The Charlottesville Lie as a way to keep the hoi polloi at each other’s throats while the powerful skim off the top.
President Trump is dangerous because he calls them out on their lies.
The powerful need to cancel him and anyone who supports him.
The last thing they want is the sort of perspective that free speech is meant to assure. Truth would risk people to turning their outrage on the powerful instead of each other.
We live in dangerous times and not because of the peaceful protesters in attendance at Trump’s speech on January 6. They are not the bad guys.
To take a lyric from Delbert McClinton, “If you (Lefties) can’t lie any better than that, you might as well tell the truth.”

Take two minutes from your busy schedule to watch the Impeachment Hearings 2.0, then watch two minutes of the footage from the events at the Capitol from a week ago. Then ask yourself which one represents democracy in action.

That’s an easy one, one was based on a lie the other represents a search for the truth. We know for a fact any claims of a stolen election are pure BS.

both cases it represents the end of a Democratic Republic and the beginning of something that is not recognizable to the former United States of America.
