The Left needs enemies to explain its failures.
When Stalin’s latest five-year plan failed, as inevitably it would, he rounded up the usual suspects for show trials. The Kulaks (wealthy peasants) were rounded up beginning in 1929. Millions of Ukrainians were starved to death in 1932-3, suspected Trotskyites met their doom in 1936-8 and, finally, the “Doctors’ Plot” of the late 1940s.
So it is that Black Lives Matter, Progressive Dane, Freedom Inc., and the International Socialist Organization have declared war on police for the failures of liberal-progressive-socialist policies. Their allies in the Democrat(ic) party are complicit with their silence, if not actual acquiescence.
Name the office holder who demands police patrol Madison’s troubled high schools. (We’ll wait.) Did Mayor Soglin, County Executive Parisi, Common Council president Baldeh, State Reps. Subeck and Taylor dissent from the ban on police marching in Sunday’s Gay Pride Shame parade? No they did not.
After 50 years of Great Society giveaways and landmark civil rights legislation, a disproportionate number of people of color are arrested for criminal behavior, fail in school, under-achieve in the workforce.
Only answer must be racism. Blame the police. Blame the rest of the criminal justice system. Blame the schools. Blame employers. Blame Scott Walker, Donald Trump, various Koch Brothers, ALEC, and the Bradley Foundation. But do not blame 45 years of liberal hegemony in Madison or even longer in Milwaukee, Chicago, Oakland, Baltimore, or New Orleans.
Instead, blame white privilege and implicit racism. Instead, play identity politics.
“The left’s obsession with identity politics was founded not in reason, but in the discovery of its power to induce fear, a power that has proved irresistible and addictive.” That is Holman W. Jenkins Jr. in today’s (08-22-18) Wall Street Journal. He relates the Left’s frenzy over the handful of white supremacists who marched Sunday in Washington D.C.
If neo-Nazis didn’t exist, the left would have to invent them. And to some extent have … where few or no white supremacists showed up and activists battled solely with police. Meanwhile, the press has contributed by letting itself be terrorized into silence about the left’s predilection for violence.
When people who palpably have no desire to give offense are being strung up, and their employers are too chicken to defend them, it’s no wonder workaday reporters and editors collapse into incoherence. The antifa left is ready to attribute racism to anybody who defends the right of racists to speak. To its discredit, the press has gone along.
Except for WI State Journal editorial cartoonist Phil Hands, who bravely took on the cop hate engendered by identity politics. Ms. Emily Mills (your standard Madison liberal-progressive-socialist) is up with a letter to the editor today chastizing Mr. Hands for “grossly misunderstand[ing] the players, positions, conversations, and controversies involved.”
Except that Ms. Mills never corrects the record. Because she can’t. And THAT is Blaska’s Bottom Line!
