Kelda Roys called police ‘dragoons’!

We’re reading Max Boot’s biography of Ronald Reagan. “He was always gracious, … always smiling,” a newsman remembered from Reagan’s days as governor of California. 

Max Boot comments: “Whether they admit it or not, journalists will pull their punches when writing about someone they like.” (Love the author’s name! Been thinking of changing mine to something like Cedric-Alan Pillbox. More authoritative.) At least since JFK, news people afford Democrats extra leeway.

We’re now down to six Democrats running for Wisconsin governor. We said a week ago that Missy Hughes would drop out of the race before August, which required no super powers of prognostication, considering that she was polling one and two percent among fellow Democrats and voters at large. We’ll now go on record as saying there will be no more drop outs before the August 11 primary election. 

Of the remaining six, who is the most likable? Damned if we know but a journalist we respect has identified the least likable. After attending and mingling with the contestants at a forum in Pewaukee Monday 06-22-26, Wisconsin Right Now publisher Jessica McBride nominates State Sen. Kelda Roys (D-Madison).

I Saw the Democrat Governor Candidates in Person, and One Was Super Unlikable

The WisPolitics convention straw poll winner was the second least affable. McBride on the current lieutenant governor:

Sara “I am a nurse” Rodriguez was surprisingly dour. My mom and other people in the audience noted that she looked down a lot and looked really unhappy throughout the entire thing. My mom thought she seemed “entitled.” She was not likable and not warm. She looked annoyed the entire night. …

[Francesca] Hong wasn’t unlikable. She was actually more of a shrinking violet than I was expecting. I was expecting Patty Hearst in a beret because the media have built her into this fire-breathing revolutionary, but she is a slight figure who talks delicately and who kind of toned down the crazy …

Winning brownie points with Ms. McBride by chatting her up were Joel Brennan (“one of these outgoing, old-school, Irish-American types with a gift of gab”) and Mandela Barnes (“a charismatic and pretty friendly guy”). David Crowley “had some charming moments” during the debate, McBride reports.

Mandela Barnes HAS read a book (right?)

Blaska’s Bottom Line Jessica McBride has now CORRECTED her account to say that state Rep. Kelda Roys, WEAC-endorsed Democrat candidate for governor, referred to local law enforcement officers NOT as “goons” last night at the forum but as Dragoons.” Not much of an improvement.

    Your comment on the name Max Boot reminded me of an episode of “The Simpsons” in which Homer decides to re-name himself Max Power–something he saw on a hairdryer. Doing so caused him to become an instant celebrity.

    If Franny came across as a shrinking violet, it’s probably because her handlers told her it was time for a makeover in an effort to appeal to voters beyond the Isthmus. Poison (in this case, toxic socialism) can sometimes come in pretty packages.

    Actually, Kelda Roys told Jessica on her feed that she got the “goons” comment wrong. To her credit, Jessica checked and discovered the comment she misheard was “dragoons,” which is a type of military unit. So it wasn’t a blatant mistake (rhetorically, there may not have been much difference in meaning), and kudos to her for checking.

    Yes likeability is a real asset. I think Mayor Satya (during 1st run), Evers (when things go his way) and even Biden while he was VP were all pretty likeable. I still like Bill Clinton. Poor bastard.

    John McCain is a good Republican example of extreme unlikeability.

      Senator John McCain may have appeared to be “unlikable”.

      He was captured and tortured during the Vietnam War. He was elected to the U.S. Senate and was a creator of campaign finance reform. He was a statesman who incidentally never lost his sense of humor. The world lost him some years ago, but his legacy remains.

      What’s not to “like”?

        We are talking about likability in the personal sense, not the grander historical sense. The man had a legendary temper.

        I remember the robocall I got from McCain in the 2008 campaign (on my old fashioned “answering machine”). The man sounded like death warmed over. I was on the fence until that call… voted for Obama.

        Some years later I learned about his hot temper. Now I think that awful robocall went out because no one on his campaign staff had the guts to ask him to do it over. It’s not business, it’s strictly personal.

    If Ms. McBride wants warm, fuzzy, and likable, she should buy a Teddy bear. One wonders if she applies the same standards to male political candidates.

    Loved governor walker, my property taxes were held in check for 10 years until gop led legislature turncoated to Evers and he effing stabbed the taxpayers in the back to the tune of 400 years. He was by far the best governor in the 21st century. Tax and spend Tommy did zero to reign in spending, zero to reign in property taxes and zero to audit and find how fraudelant the uw was claiming to be paupers all the while sitting on giant slush fund. But he was a nice guy same with dreyfus. I will take the guy/gal that makes hard choices over a back slapper anyday everyday. I have always believed Democrats were all commies/marxists and was looked at as though i was nutz, now they are brazen and open about their failed marxist theories that Reanaldus Maximus talked about for 50 years. ProRegressive policies always widen Wage gaps make things insufferable and prop up further the few over the masses and stifle upward mobility.
    Wonder if my wifes vote will be stolen again this Fall!
