Being tormented again today by gorgeous photographs of the Northern Lights populating our social media feed. Not from Norway or Nome but right here in Madison WI. Hellz bellz, they’re seeing them in Arizona! Once again Wednesday night 11-12-25 the Head Groundskeeper ventured out from the Stately Manor into the wilds of the Town of Middleton to view the aurora borealis. Once again, nothing but black skies coming our way.
What are we doing wrong?

A UW-Madison sophomore can expect a fawning hagiography from John Nichols, publicist for the socialist cause. Caught up in “Mamdani momentum,” young Bobby Gronert is running as a democratic socialist for Madison Common Council. Isthmus has the story:
Bobby Gronert took the stage after media outlets called the race for Mamdani to announce he was running for the campus area seat on the city council, District 8. Ald. MGR Govindarajan has represented the seat since 2023.
“We have witnessed history for the American left,” Gronert said. “The victory of Zohran Mamdani proves what all of us know here — that people are sick and tired of the Democratic Party.”
Some tribunal operating out of The Hague should put journalist Jonathan Chait on trial for torturing the English language. “Democrats decided to help end the shutdown,” he writes in The Atlantic.
To be exact, only 7 of 45 Democrats in the Senate and a microscopic 6 House Democrats out of 214 decided to “help end the shutdown” they started in the first place. The vast majority of Democrats voted to continue the shutdown. Congrats to one of the dissenting Democrats, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, who said: “None of my friends who rely on SNAP would want to trade their dinner for an ambiguous D.C. beltway ‘messaging victory’. I’m glad this ugly scene is in the rearview mirror.”
But Chait commits to print what is obvious to everyone but the fanboys: that Zohran Mamdani was very fortunate in his opponents.
Kamala Harris beat Donald Trump in New York City by 37 points, which was quite low by historic standards — previous Democratic presidential candidates have carried the city by 50 to 60 points. … A win is a win, but Mamdani’s 9-point margin is deeply unimpressive in a city where Democrats usually win. [BLASKA: At that, Mamdani got 50.4% of the total vote in a three-candidate field.]
His national favorability rating is a dismal 21%, lower even than Senator Chuck Schumer’s 25%. … Mamdani won by a modest margin in a deeply blue city not because of his radical commitments, but despite them.

Assigned reading: The Breakdown of Higher Education, written by retired professor John Ellis. Of the various women’s and ethnic studies, Ellis writes:
Spend much time in any of these disciplines’ classrooms and you’ll hear such phrases as “resisting systems of oppression,” “advancing social justice” and “preparing students to become agents of social change.” These are political goals, not academic ones, and essentially code for Marxist ideas. A reforming dean’s duty is clear … the departments in this category can be disbanded.

Ever wonder why Karl Marx, whose ideology has failed spectacularly wherever and whenever it was implemented, is gushed over by so many academics as though he were the Taylor Swift of economic theorists? There are Marxists in every department, not just where you’d expect to find them (political science, economics, sociology) but in literature and art history and philosophy. The only exceptions are the hard sciences, which have better things to think about than hare-brained utopian hogwash. My own theory is that academics of a certain stripe love to picture themselves as the champions of lost causes, and the loster the better. It separates them from the benighted capitalist bourgeoise, on whom they love to look down their noses.
As for “disciplines” that are essentially front organizations for Marxist ideas, the worst offenders are the Grievance Studies departments (Afro-American, Women’s, Queer, Latinx, etc.,etc.). They ought to be the next targets of Trump’s ire. Eliminating them would save universities millions of dollars and spare the forced indoctrination of millions of college students.
I predict that the UW sophomore who has decided to take up the cause of Mamdanianism here in Madison will eventually graduate with a degree in queer dance theory–and indebtedness of $50,000.
If a raging woke bombthrower like Max Prestigiacomo got elected in Madison, so can a Marxist like Gronert.
That’s because parts of the city–University Heights, Shorewood Hills, the near West Side–are populated by armchair radicals who have cushy tenured positions at the UW, city, state and local governments. They can afford to flirt with left-wing radicals, socialists and Marxists because they’re secure in the knowledge that they’ll never have to suffer the consequences, economic or otherwise.
Hear, hear. Progressive luxury beliefs.
HMMMM.. Senators trying to grab 500k, No bid contracts. Waive background checks. Flying girlfriends on gov’t jets. refuse to answer questions. Crypto scams. Free Arab jets. Epstein files. MAGA luxury beliefs.
Show me the charges. Show me the investigations. Show me the court trials. Show me the convictions. Cheap talk coming from a guy from Chicago where corruption is a way of life and business. Remind me again of how many of them in Chicago city government have been convicted in the last five decades.

Read a short concise response on Nextdoor and land it here. “Examples of democratic socialism are Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Universal Healthcare, and many basic human rights that we take for granted in this country. Those who demonize progressive social programs simple do not understand the term, or wrongly associate it with communism . This seems especially true of the older generation”.
I would just add that this week I read and posted on my FB page that “America doesn’t like socialism? In the 1890s, nearly 1,000,000 veterans and their dependents were receiving government pensions amounting to over 40% of the federal budget. We are to believe that socialism was anathema to our nation?”

Cancelling all student and medical debt
