the great R. Crumb

No chin wags with Republicans?

They hold the purse strings!

Soglin, former sheriff David Mahoney, and former Council president Sheri Carter oppose the referendum

Paul Soglin’s bill of particulars:

2012-19 Soglin ends practice of using borrowed and one time funds for the operating budget antagonizing the spendthrifts on the city council. He further angers them by opposing the $100 million they add to city budgets over the eight years driving up the debt and limiting the city’s ability to finance social and economic justice programs.

2017-18 Soglin and Robin Vos meet to discuss the structure of a Regional Transit Authority, recognizing it cannot happen until Scott Walker is out of office. …

2021-22 Non-profits funded by the city show lead staff receiving compensation of $290,242; $320,000; and $545038. There is no accountability or explanation as to why the public is funding organizations with such extraordinary compensation. [See: “Why is Brandi Johnson getting …”]

2020 Satya Rhodes-Conway eliminates the city of Madison position of Government Relations/Lobbyist and terminates the contract with the lobbying firm with connections to Republicans in the legislature.

2023 Governor Evers’ budget includes changes to Shared Revenue program, ability to create Regional Transit Authority (RTA).

2023 Milwaukee intensely lobbies the legislature, Madison does not show up. Milwaukee spends more time with Madison legislators than do Madison elected officials, Shared revenue payments are increased benefitting virtually every city in Wisconsin, except Madison.

Madison does not see the creation of an RTA, an increase in payments of $13.5 million in the Municipal Services program, or the Expenditure Restraint program.

2023 For the fifth year in a row the mayor and city council adopt a budget using borrowed money and one time revenue. The result is a structural deficit of $22 million for 2025.

2024 The mayor, many current alders, and many former spendthrift alders Denise Demarb, Matt Phair, Mark Clear, and Shiva Bidar-Seilaff urge support for the $22 million deficit referendum, which they created.

Next year we have a supportive Governor Evers, Democratic legislators from Madison who love our city, smaller Republican majorities, AND Republican legislators who want to see the same programs adopted that Madison desires including creation of an RTA and funding for the Municipal Services Payment account.

(In the 17-2 vote in August 2024 to approve the referendum, only current alders Isadore Knox Jr. and Barbara Harrington-McKinney voted no.)

Blaska’s Bottom Line: Another former mayor, Dave Cieslewicz, opposes both school referenda!

Who else thinks all three are going down?!

Who else thinks all three are going down?!

If neighborsnextdoor (THEY Report/YOU Decide!) is any indicator, a clear majority (along with Madison muckety-mucks Soglin, Amato, Humphrey, Mayor BikeShorts, Mahoney, et al) are firmly in that camp…as is yours truly.

I’m just waiting for Dane County to overspend and want a referendum to bail them out. Would that be a winning trifecta?

Make no mistake, David Cieslewicz supports the city referendum.
    Once progressive Dane,

Mayor Dave was part of the problem. Imagine if he had gotten his trolley idea enacted.

Actually, former mayor BikeShorts has been pretty consistent in his CONDEMNATION of the referenda; what makes you think otherwise?

Former Mayor Dave doesn’t support the MMSD referenda, but he does support the City of Madison’s referendum. https://captimes.com/opinion/letters-to-the-editor/letter-city-referendum-the-only-way-out/article_42037c86-705b-11ef-8efb-2b4a886a4a40.html

Thanks for the clarification, SK. Sheesh; these days, you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting an 11/5/2024 referenda.
