The WI State Journal is struck dumb!
Day 5 of the UW-Gaza encampment here in Madison WI. (Where is Ted Koppel when we need him?) Tents went up Monday morning 04-29-24 on Library Mall in a nationwide, (and we think) organized, well financed college campus show of support for the Hamas-led Palestinians. Police swept through early Wednesday morning to remove the tents because they violated campus policy.
Some of us Deplorables cheered Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin’s apparent resolve but now the illegal tents are back and she is negotiating with the outlaws. They demand total divestment from Israel, amnesty, no cops on campus, and (for all we know) the release of the Bader Meinhoff gang and other terrorists Hans Gruber read about in Time magazine.
Early this week, a certain former mayor recommended that university administration just ignore the encampment. Problem with that tactic: next week, a MAGA deployment? Free speech doesn’t need tents, which leads to barricades (as at UCLA) and, who knows, trench warfare and mustard gas.
Instead, the chancellor has gone both ways (like many of her gender studies majors). Smashing pumpkins one day and engaging the scofflaws in some vigorous chin wagging the next. That is what, Dave Cieslewicz suggests, is known as a mixed message. We would add, a sign of weakness. A sign that Bascom Hall is open for business to any one who can muster some muscle in lieu of democratic consensus.
The student campers have no legitimacy! They were not elected by the student body nor appointed by the duly constituted Board of Regents. They did not secure a mandate from their co-workers, as a labor union must to merit representation status. Students for Justice in Palestine and their cohorts in the Socialist Workers Party are illegitimate.

The pro-Hamas Capital Times, on the other hand, backs the student occupiers’ calls for divestment. Well, why not! The President of the United States who surrendered to the Taliban now demands a cease fire as it negotiates with the Gaza murderers. Whatever happened to unconditional surrender? At least they have an opinion and have enough corpuscles to share it. In contrast to the Wisconsin State Journal. Our favorite hometown morning newspaper is practicing opinion page omerta on the biggest local story (outside the Mt. Horeb school shooting). Today’s editorial: “Biden should make a serious bid for Florida.”
Blaska’s Bottom Line: The State Journal should make a serious bid for editorial courage. Start by insisting that any negotiations must require the local chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine issue an unreserved condemnation of Hamas and the atrocities it has inflicted on Israeli civilians and apologize for its misrule in Gaza and for bringing death and destruction to fellow Palestinians. Do that, strike the tents, and the university will consider at what date in the future, young scholar, you might be reinstated to this great university.

As you probably know by now, 2024 promises to be a boom year for cicadas. Cicadas are known chiefly for their ability to suddenly appear in tremendous numbers and create deafening noise. They emerge, having spent the entirety of their lives sheltered from, and thus oblivious to, the realities of the outside world. Upon emerging they take on the appearance of an adult, find prominent places to congregate in truly massive numbers, have in-discriminant sex, and scream to the utmost of their abilities. It is this screaming, in the form of rising and falling mindless chanting in unison, that the rest of the world finds so annoying. Despite the loudness, they have no bite, thus pose no threat. In the coming weeks we will see the winding down of Gaza Brood XXIV, but prepare yourselves for the emergence of Pride Brood XXIV next month. (but they promise to be FABULOUS!)
Heh! At least Cicadas’ spent carcasses enrich our ecosystem in a Circle of Life kinda way.
