A marquee New Years weekend football game, no? (NO!) The defending national college football champion Georgia Bulldogs versus the only undefeated team not invited to the final four college football playoffs, Florida State.
A ballyhooed match-up. (Bally WHO?) Number 4 Seminoles v. #6 Georgia. The Orange Bowl! The best two teams not playing for a national championship. Instead …
A fraud and a disaster!

It was the Harlem Globetrotters versus the Washington Generals. Custer at Little Big Horn, the Black Sox, Piltdown Man, Hitler’s Diary, Tim Michels for governor. After Camp Lejuene, the tort lawyers should get on this fraud on the paying public. Sue for lost enjoyment of life.

ESPN is owed Dominion Voting Systems kind of damages! The network tallied the toll: Florida State played Saturday 12-30-23 without their top two quarterbacks, top two running backs, top two receivers, starting tight end, three starting defensive linemen, two of three starting linebackers and three starting defensive backs. They were down 29 scholarship players in all.
All fearful of stubbing their toe and dropping down in the NFL draft. Or just pissed that they were passed over (like Fredo). The Bulldogs put in their back-up QB and the undermanned Florida State junior varsity team couldn’t stop him!
”People need to see what happened tonight, and they need to fix this,” winning coach Kirby Smart smarted, lamenting the flood of opt-outs and portal entries on teams playing in non-playoff bowl games.
We said before that the 43 bowl games are on their way out. (Minnesota Gophers qualify with a 5 and 7 record? As Elaine Benes used to say, Get outta here!) Yeah, we get the $$$ part. (The Badgers’ ReliaQuest Bowl pays $6.35 million to each team, the third-most of the non-playoff bowls.) But after Georgia 63, Florida State 3, watch the money dry up.
Braelon Allen and eight others are out for today's UW Badger bowl game. The LSU Tigers' starting QB Jayden Daniels is out, too. Would Ron Vander Kelen and Pat Richter have sat out the 1963 Rose Bowl?
The day will come when our own Wisconsin Badgers will quality for something like the Colo-Guard Bowl and the entire offensive line will opt out, as will three assistant coaches, the equipment manager, the line judge, and the hotel shuttle driver. Do you blame them?
Blaska’s Bottom Line: Transfer portals, opt outs, conference consolidation, paying head coaches $75 million not to coach, paying players! — college football is broken! (!!!) Maybe the University of Chicago had the right idea back in 1939. [ BONUS THOUGHT added 1½ hours before Badger kick-off: Next season’s 12-team NCAA playoffs are now the only games that matter. ]
