Is Dane County ready for stoned progressivism?

Melissa Agard

If she were a Republican, John Nichols would call her a career politician. Melissa Agard served on the Dane County Board of Supervisors from 2010 to 2014, won election to the state Assembly in 2012, and to the state Senate in 2020.

Now the ambitious lady is running for Dane County executive which may well serve, who knows, as a springboard to the governor’s mansion.

The current county exec, Joe Parisi, gamed the system by announcing he would retire but not until May 2024, thereby avoiding a spring election and postponing the election to November’s presidential ballot, on which Tammy Baldwin seeks re-election to the U.S. Senate, the better to harvest the county’s huge Democrat(ic) base in this officially non-partisan office.

This is where apologists chirp “Politics Ain’t Beanbag.”
“A form of reparations”?

Like all far-Left candidates during an election, Melissa Agard says she “works across the aisle in a pragmatic way.”

Call it pragmatic or opportunistic, Ms. Agard supports abortion all the way, wants to legalize recreational marijuana, and bows low to the teachers union. Planned Parenthood, the teachers unions, and other organized labor are her most generous campaign paymasters. This Dane County Democrat checks the right boxes for her Madison constituency.

The statewide police union ranked 30 state senators in 2022, Agard ranked 24th. She voted with small business only 22% of the time, according to the Federation of Independent Business. (16 of the 33 senators scored a perfect 100%.) The Metro Milwaukee Association of Commerce scored Sen. Agard fourth from the bottom. Wisconsin Family Action gave her a big fat zero (0%) rating.

According to Family Action, Agard voted:

Madison Ald. Regina Vidaver, who represents the Near West Side, is the only other candidate so far. No filing deadline has yet been established, the county clerk tells us.

Blaska’s Bottom Line: is a fantasy, so please indulge me. What if a candidates should emerge from, say, Sun Prairie or Waunakee? Maybe a tory Democrat or someone entirely a-political. Someone with proven management skills — dare a business person risk his bottom line? Environmentally sound but not in the market for undevelopable marshland. Someone who won’t increase taxes by 14%. Who won’t throw $1 million at the City of Madison’s “Food Market.” Who will demand a county board performance audit of multiple bails given repeat criminal offenders by Dane County judges. Who will push for education reform, not reparations.

I am confident that the voters of Dane County will elect an Executive that is farther left than the present one. So like the Madison Mayor and City Council be ready for higher taxes, lower services and more wining the State doesn’t give them enough money.

I was the one who she ran against for Dane Cty supervisor. Her campaigning (as she was pregnant) was not done by her. Her minions followed me and intimidated my supporters, took down my signs. Plays so fair. What she supports, contrary to what she says, is immoral and sinful; but she’s big in Dane Cty and most likely will win. Remember, Madison alone is about 90+% Lib.

The guy that really got screwed was William Blount. Anti Spanish Conspiracy in 1797. Really? A bunch of Dems got it for supporting the Confederacy. Which seems weird today since their flag is so often on display at right-wing rallies. It gets hard to rewrite history when so many members of the GOP voted to send his ass down the road.

  6. I was not surprised the reporting in local media about the timing of the election was handled in the fashion it was, after all, how do you film a TV news segment about the matter and create an interest for the public? No blood or crashes or mayhem to be seen. HOWEVER, this is one of those process questions about the government that seemingly got tossed aside and we moved on to another story. But the machinations about the timing of the County Exec. leaving and the forced timing of the election is troubling for the process. Again, just one more reason why Civics Education is a MUST in our public schools and why it matters.

There are many ways politicians and political parties try and influence elections. Both sides do it but the democrats seem to be better at it than the republicans.
