Kevin McCarthy is what leaders do when they are cornered and have no other choice. They lead. The speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives — the chamber charged with budgeting — put up a clean, bipartisan bill to avert a government shutdown. It passed 335-91 this very Saturday but 90 members of his 216-member caucus voted no.
So government won’t shut down — not that the United States would go hurtling off into space if it did. The Left’s most doomsday objection to a government shutdown is that government workers would go without checks for a few weeks. To the fainting couches!
We admire McCarthy for refusing to cave to the small minority that is the so-called “Freedom Caucus.” One of his supporters, Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb) gave the money quote: “We’re tired of f–king around with these whack jobs.”
McCarthy's move is a direct rebuke of one former President defeated for re-election who urged a shutdown.
‘Bring it!‘
Now the other shoe will drop. Matt Gaetz, Paul Gosar, the amorous vaper Loren Boebert and other members of the Whack Job Caucus will move to strip McCarthy of his hard-won speakership. “If someone wants to make a motion against me, bring it,” McCarthy said after the vote this Badger football-less Saturday.
Democrats are not clean. Their Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) tried to delay the vote on the continuing resolution that would avert a shutdown by . . . pulling the fire alarm in the Cannon office building! The committee Rep. Brian Steil (R-WI) chairs will investigate.
“There are at least two potential crimes. The first is calling emergency services when there is plainly no emergency. The second is trying to disrupt congressional business,” judges Brendan Michael Doherty at National Review.
Isn't that what the Proud Boys were convicted of?
Blaska’s Bottom Line: We admire standing on principal but the election-denying Chaos Caucus is against the concept of government itself. They won’t elect Matt Gaetz to succeed McCarthy as Speaker but they may elect Hakeem Jeffries, the Democrats’ leader.
