Political figures are supposed to show empathy. It’s devilishly difficult to get it right. Ronald Reagan pretty much nailed it when the Challenger space shuttle blew up on national television. But then, he had Peggy Noonan to write about “slipping the surly bonds of earth.” And the Gipper delivered his encomium from the Oval Office, not on the recovery ship or in Christa McAuliffe’s bereft classroom, for which we can be thankful. (Great deconstruction of that 1986 speech here.)
George W. Bush was accused of insensitivity when he asked Air Force One to fly low over New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Didn’t want to stress search & rescue efforts with the logistics of a Presidential visit. What was he supposed to do: have cargo pushers drop some beignets on the beleaguered city? (“Helluva job, Brownie!” didn’t help.)
If he is known for anything, Joe Biden is known for empathy. And gaffes. The President and First Lady hit the ground in devastated Maui, whereupon the octogenarian likened the deadly Hawaiian wildfire — 115 dead, 850 missing (so far) — to a 2004 house fire that almost cost him a cat and his ’67 Corvette.

Perhaps mindful of the tragedy in Maui, Global Climate Change, and the Democrat(ic) tort lobby, the City of Oconomowoc WI took pre-emptive action this week lest it be accused of not sounding the siren or rushing in to save the children of Robb elementary school in Uvalde TX. The City of Oconomowoc announced this high alert:
Starting Monday, August 21, the Imagination Station Playground will be closed while we investigate the sighting of a mouse and a burrow hole. A review of the site did not indicate more than just the single hole. While closed, an exterminator will work to remove the mouse and a thorough review for burrows will be completed. …
Since its construction, this is the first time a burrow has been located in the playground. Notification will be provided when the playground is open for use. In the meantime, please explore our many other playgrounds.

The City’s announcement, however, was short on empathy. The Werkes saw no evidence of any apology for inconvenience for denying children access to “Waukesha County’s first fully inclusive playground!” (Now fully EX-clusive!)
Blaska’s Bottom Line: Perhaps TV crews rushed to the scene to record the tears of children denied entrance. We don’t know because our b&w Philco does not pick up Milwaukee-area TV. In any event, we don’t care. There are just too damn many tragedies these days! We can’t keep up! We’re all tragedied out!
