Blaska just pawn in game of life
Today’s Page One headline in the print version of our favorite Madison WI morning daily newspaper:
“First Black sheriff sworn in”
Is that all of Kalvin Barrett, Dane County’s newly appointed sheriff? His sum and total? Twelve years a lawman, master’s degree in criminal justice, educator. Given the hoo-hah around race and policing, post Michael Brown and George Floyd, we get it. But …
God have pity on our souls! The headline reminded the Werkes of Mel Brook’s sacrilegious movie Blazing Saddles. Old Gabby Johnson on the roof; peering through a telescope he announces (in his authentic frontier gibberish), “The Sheriff is a …” CHURCH BELL RINGS. “The sheriff is a …” CHURCH BELL RINGS again.
On the ground, one of the other Johnsons of Rock Ridge translates: “He’s saying, the sheriff is a-comin’.” That is, until Black Bart (played by Cleavon Little) rides into town.
No laughing matter
Blazing Saddles is canonical. Deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress and enshrined in the National Film Registry.) Reality check: The movie was released 47 years ago! Has America gone forward or backward since that time? Could the movie be shown on NBC today? The network pulled out of the Golden Globe award show because none of the foreign film journalists — predominantly European and Asian — who vote on the awards is black.
Now that Dane County WI has its first black (we do not capitalize) sheriff, black police chief, black school superintendent, district attorney, judges, legislators — plus a good admixture of hispanic, asian, differently abled, and LBGTQ folk (including our mayor, U.S. Senator, and congressman)— can we move the hell on? How much longer must we be identitified by our externalities?
Blaska’s Bottom Line: We continue our quest to scrub future Censuses of any reference to race or national origin. As for Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett, all we want to know is “Can he shoot straight?”
When the color of ones skin trumps all other factors of life and character then humanity is doomed to repeat the same kinds of racist mistakes that it has made in the past.
Be race blind not race centered, being race centered is racism.
Poor guy … how long until he is called “Uncle Tom”? Will his home address be on the rotation with the mayor and DA’s?

Also, Howard Johnson is right.

If they couldn’t play identity politics, low-flow lockstep Lefty lemming-like Luddites would get a hitch in their hempen homespun. Proglibocrats pretend to be diverse. They’re not. In fact they’re collectively guilty of racism AND lookism, … one of the worst -isms there is(m).
Regardless of the junk between your legs, your sexual preference or even the color of your skin, iI you
thinkfeel and behave the same, … you’re NOT really diverse. And yet, … Lefties have managed to go from bad to diverse.
Today, Blazing Saddles would be censored by the keepers of The Cancel Culture Club.
Safe space-seeking, snot-nosed snowflakes would proglobotically be offended by any comedy.
You know why Lefties have no sense of humor?
There’s nothing funny about being one.

Lefties have no self-awareness.
An angry, righteously indignant low-flow Lefty laments,
“Judging someone by race and sex is just wrong!
Why can’t you old, privileged white men understand?!!!”

Didn’t the Divine Miss Vicki tell us, “Madison is beyond parody?”
Yes, it is.
ICYMI, … in case you missed it.

re: comedy, I’d like to see the return of the troupe. Much harder to cancel. Monty Python mocked religion in most of their movies but especially “Life of Brian”. This was back when Catholicism was more popular and the movie was widely protested…which increased the box office considerably.
John McWhorter says wokeism is just another religion. A good comedy troupe could skewer it and become rich along the way.

Ah, yes. “Blazing Saddles”. A masterpiece. Especially enjoyed Madeline Kahn’s performance as Lili von Shtupp, the Teutonic Titwillow.
Germans were caricatured in that movie but nobody at the time (’74), at least around Madison, was yelling “racism”. The Black sheriff character was dressed in western designer threads. Brilliant casting all around.

OFF TOPIC: (this references the picture in the side-bar of the woman in the “M-18 Claymore mask”.
Today,(5/11/21) marks the end of Ramadan, should men not be permitted to finally uncover their faces, (while remaining obligatory for females, of course)?

“How much longer must we be identified by our externalities?” Certainly for the foreseeable future. Or until the consequences become intolerable. (Some of us think they’re already intolerable, but that’s another matter.) And speaking of the minefield of capitalization: “black” as an adjective has no business being capitalized unless white, red, brown, yellow and any other shade of skin color are awarded that distinction. Capitalizing “black” is the grammatical equivalent of kneeling before BLM thugs while they berate you for your white privilege (Madison’s favorite pastime); it’s blatant virtue signaling. On the other hand, Hispanic and Asian can make a claim to being capitalized as they refer to geographical locations already capitalized (I’m assuming Hispanic derives from Hispaniola). Ditto for Latin. As for the abomination of Latinx ….

Bart:
Are we awake?
Jim:
We’re not sure. Are we black?
Bart:
Yes, we are.
Jim:
Then we’re awake, but very puzzled.
Of course in the Emerald City we would have to replace “awake” with “woke”.

“Do YOU think the sheriff’s race matters?”
Absolutely NOT. It’s a detail like his height & weight and so on. Future, improved departmental performance is what I’ll be lookin’ at.
Lefties are going more backwards than FWD concerning race.

How long will it take until we find out who the new sheriff is really working for? I would love to give him the benefit of the doubt but this is Madison after all.

So we now have a “woke” President, a “woke” Vice President, a “woke” Congress and Senate, a “woke” Sheriff, a “woke” Police Chief, a “woke” Mayor, a “woke” Governor, a “woke” Lieutenant Governor and so on and so forth. Not to mention the “woke” city council and school board.
Moving forward, we should not experience any of the societal problems we have had in the past. After all, with all these “woke” people running the show, what could possibly go wrong?
