This just in: Gannett will furlough hundreds of newspaper employees across the nation including, according to Dan Bice, “every Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter whose work you read regularly, including all members of the political team — Bill Glauber, Molly Beck, Patrick Marley, Mary Spicuzza, Craig Gilbert, and me.” The pandemic has already claimed Isthmus weekly here in Madison WI.
Great line from Ann of Althouse; introducing the topic of the US Navy hospital ship Comfort sent to New York City, she writes: “Here’s Rachel Maddow, doing what she could to keep our spirits down, on March 20:”
“There’s no sign that they’ll be anywhere on site helping out anywhere in the country for weeks yet. The president said when he announced that those ships would be put into action against the COVID-19 epidemic. He said one of those ships would be operational in New York harbor by next week. That’s nonsense. It will not be there next week.”
Ann reports: “The ship departed Saturday from Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia. It was undergoing maintenance when President Donald Trump pledged to deploy it to New York, which was expected to take two weeks but was sped up to eight days.” The USS Comfort arrived in New York harbor 03-30-2020.
In defense of price ‘gouging’
In some cases, anyway. A Nobel Prize-winning economist quoted in the Wall Street Journal:
A firm making N95 masks will need to scale production dramatically. At something close to normal prices, it is unlikely that a firm will buy the additional capital equipment necessary for a many-fold increase in their production capacity, only to meet a temporary surge in demand. Firms won’t be able to recover their costs from capital equipment.
Who do you trust?
That daytime quiz show was Johnny Carson’s gig before being tapped to succeed Jack Paar in 1962. At some point, America — humanity itself — will emerge from this crisis into a brighter day. How will Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Todd, Rachel Maddow and Don Lemon fare in the court of public opinion vis a vis President Trump, Mike Pence, and Drs. Fauci and Birx?
“Our nation has heard our plea for help here in New York City,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said as he greeted the ship at Pier 90. “There could not be a better example of all of America pulling for New York City than the arrival of the USNS Comfort.”
