Our 10 favorite Super Bowl ads of 2020

Love and good humor make the day

Humor sells ideas and products. Humor tickles its way under our defensive body armor to make its point. Reagan and Churchill were masters of political comedy. At the Policy Werkes, funny accounted for most of our favorite commercial videos during Super Bowl LIV Sunday 02-02-2020.

As aging boomers, cultural touchstones also work. And we’re suckers for honest sentiment. That may explain our first selection in Blaska’s first annual Top Ten Super Bowl ads.

1) Old man tells Google what to remember about his late wife.

2) Bill Murray reprising Groundhog Day for Jeep. Great to see Ned Ryerson again!

3) Bryan Cranston reprises The Shining for Mountain Dew, including the elevator lobby being inundated in Dew.

4) Alexa play my favorite song with Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi. (Turns out her favorite song is that old jug band music.)

5) Dancing mustache with Sam Elliott for Doritos (with cool Ennio Morricone music from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly)

6) Love Takes Action (“Agape”) for New York Life.

7) The clothing stain series of commercials for Tide. Woven throughout the broadcast.

8) Mr. Peanut baby. After the tease of Mr. Peanut’s death.

9) The big chili spill for all those Procter & Gamble clean-up products. Innovative.

10) Donald Trump freed me from prison. Simple, daring — and caring. The President goes after the black vote. Might be as powerful as JFK’s concern for ML King Jr in the Birmingham jail. You can take all your political 8-point plans; direct action speaks louder. (Noticing that WI GOP is opening a retail office in downtown Milwaukee.)

This is how you sell life insurance

From that New York Life ad:

The ancient Greeks had four words for love. The first is ‘Philia’—Philia is affection that grows from friendship. Next, there’s ‘Storge’ – the kind you have for a grandparent or a brother. The third is ‘Eros,’ the uncontrollable urge to say ‘I love you.’

The fourth kind of love is different. It’s the most admirable. It’s called ‘Agape’ – love as an action. It takes courage. Sacrifice. Strength.

For 175 years, we’ve been helping people act on their love, so they can look back, or look ahead, and say – ‘we got it right.’

What were YOUR favorites (and why?)

Loved the Rick and Morty ad for Pringles–but then again I’m a diehard R&M fan.

Your #1 was great – and yes Ellen nailed it – and I liked Scout & Weather Tech supporting the UW Vet School. Honorable mention to Winona, MN who must have tapped into the Fastenall family fortune to pay to look like Fargo for 30 seconds.
