The conservative case against Medicaid expansion

The conservative position on Gov. Tony Evers’ proposed Medicaid expansion, as explained by Robin Vos, R-Racine County, Speaker of the Wisconsin Assembly:

The state of Wisconsin is taking care of the medical care of our most needy populations. Wisconsin has about one in five people on Medicaid, and when we add the Medicare population, over one-third of the state gets health care from the government.

State.Investment.Medicaid.png

As you can see from the graph above, the cost of Medicaid coverage continues to be a large and growing investment out of our state checkbook. In 2013, our state expanded Medicaid coverage to include every single person living in poverty in our state. This move means everyone in Wisconsin has access to health insurance.

Unfortunately Governor Evers and Democrats are trying to sell Medicaid expansion as “free money” from the federal government but they’re neglecting to tell you the entire story.

What Evers isn’t telling you is that roughly half of the 82,000 people who they want to push on welfare already have insurance on the exchange. The premiums on the exchange can be as low as 18 cents per month. Instead of expanding Medicaid, we should focus on increasing opportunities to connect uninsured individuals to coverage they already can get.

A UW study shows putting more people on government health care will actually drive up costs for Wisconsin and the individuals who are on private insurance. Keep in mind, with Medicaid expansion, we’re taking people off a fully, federally subsidized program on to one that the state will have to pay up to 10% of the costs.

I didn’t run for the legislature to vote for the expansion of welfare, especially at a time when we have record unemployment and unfilled jobs. I don’t want more government benefits at a time when we have so much private sector success. The bottom line is we shouldn’t hurt the private health insurance system, raise health care costs or put taxpayers at risk.

… It’s not just a federal free lunch according to the Wall Street Journal editorial board [“State Medicaid tax trap“], and in The Hill, an editorial [“Medicaid expansion entails significant costs to consumers”] outlines the significant costs to consumers.

This “free money” is like a quick sugar rush that takes its toll on future state budgets. It won’t live up to the rhetoric that you’re hearing from Democrats now.

What everyone needs to understand about medical/health (I won’t use the HC word) consumption and spending has a lot to do with Baumol’s cost disease. I’m aware this is a political blog, but the politics surrounding medical/health spending is absolutely dysfunctional. It makes matters worse, not better. It’s a shame that a society as rich as the USA won’t do anything about this social ill. Slate Star Codex does a lot better analysis than I ever could. Must read for those seriously concerned. We’re rich and we’re suffering because of it. Corporatism and really does cause Hell on Earth.

Appreciate hearing this side. Part of me wonders when the bill that the federal government is accumulating will come due. Part of me wishes we did have universal health care coverage. I can testify that my individual coverage is $1100/month…which is actually over the estimated cost to provide universal health coverage per capita ($10,000/year). But, at least I can get coverage, at least as long as ObamaCare survives. Which highlights the difference between affordable and available.

Unfortunately I can’t give you an apples to apples comparison. I can tell you my COBRA was $6,000/year. But I was likely not insurable before ObamaCare so there’s that too. No easy answers here. I’m happy to have a policy.

          @Mark Porter;

$6 large/year is peanuts! If she had the family plan, the lovely & long suffering Mrs. Gotch’s employer sponsored coverage would be ~ 1800/ month.

And that’s just one of the aspects of health care (prudent underwriting/risk assessment) that Hopey Changey Care f****d up.

She only has the option of adding family to her individual plan, and the exorbitant premium for that puts the plan in the same risk pool as a family with 10 kids.

Auto, life, and some other types of insurance have rating tables which create higher premiums for greater degrees of risk. Safe drivers don’t have to be in the same auto risk pool with teenage boys and other high risk/high claim drivers.

The uninsured have access to Health Insurance Risk Sharing Program in Wisconsin and other states.

You can automatically qualify for coverage after you’ve gotten turned down by two insurers, easily done when you’re uninsurable.

That ain’t it all. Your ‘pricier plan that conforms to all the requirements of the new health care law’ includes, but is by NO MEANS limited to, pre-natal care, pregnancy, ALL manner of delivery and…um…termination options, and, lest we forget, counseling to help you make the right decision throughout.

I believe that in our great country, every legal citizen should have access to basic health care regardless of their financial situation, period! A great nation care/provide for its most vulnerable; Hopey Changey Care was supposed to help, right?

Curious; did your premiums go down ~ $2500/year and/or did you get to keep your Doctor or your Plan?

Or consider the nearly six year old lament of Cindy Vinson, Tom Waschura, et al, depicted below.

        And ask; has it:

“Roughly half of the 82,000 people…already have insurance on the exchange”. Would that be the Obamacare exchange that the GOP is constantly trying to kill with no plausible replacement? And for the other 41,000 focus on connecting them to “coverage they can already get” despite the GOP’s deep cuts to the exact same outreach effort?
Ninety percent federal funding is considered a great deal when we’re talking highway money, why not health care?

    From the 10/05/2013 Mercury News

“(Bay Area residents) Cindy Vinson and Tom Waschura are big believers in the Affordable Care Act. They vote independent and are proud to say they helped elect and re-elect President Barack Obama.

”Yet, like many other Bay Area residents who pay for their own medical insurance, they were floored last week when they opened their bills: Their policies were being replaced with pricier plans that conform to all the requirements of the new health care law.

”Vinson, of San Jose, will pay $1,800 more a year for an individual policy, while Waschura, of Portola Valley, will cough up almost $10,000 more for insurance for his family of four.”

    It gets worse.

” ‘I was laughing at Boehner — until the mail came today,’ Waschura said, referring to House Speaker John Boehner, who is leading the Republican charge to defund Obamacare.”

And the epitaph/kill shot/ever luvin’ coup de freakin’ grâce:

Vinson: “Of course, I want people to have health care, I JUST DIDN’T REALIZE I WOULD BE THE ONE WHO WAS GOING TO PAY FOR IT PERSONALLY.” (bolds/caps mine)

Screw that and our teeth gnashing Progs.
3.2% GDP, rising wages, full employment, streamlining our military and minimizing its commitments. Making America great again will indeed be an example Europe could only wish for and by the by, it can damn well defend itself.
Now if we can control our border, streamline the immigration and visa programs much of our growth will be on rails.
Comes the moment, comes President Trump.

“OPM,” a topic with which Big-Spending Lefties are extremely familiar…..

It’s not worth the time to ‘splain “tax-loss” or “double-declining depreciation” to you. But take a little time in your nursing-home library and look them up. I don’t expect that you’ll understand the concepts, but at least you’ll be asleep and not bothering the help.

DAD29, Left vs Right model was subsumed by the Washington Party/Globalistas. Paul Ryan is Exhibit A. He went to Washington with a ten year path to a balanced budget then left town after putting thru the Omnibus Spending Bill and you had to read it to find out who got paid off. The Bush/Clinton/Obama love fest at McCain’s funeral (and while I voted for him, I sure don’t miss him) was eye opening.

By Revolution, are you referring to undoing the administrative state?
Aka: the swamp, establishment, Washington, elites.

See: Unmasking the Administrative State: The Crisis of American Politics in the Twenty-First Century
by John Marini, Ken Masugi (Editor)

“The election of Donald J. Trump to the presidency shocked the political establishment, triggering a wave of hysteria among the bicoastal elite that may never subside. The biggest shockwaves of all, however, were felt not in the progressive parishes of Manhattan or San Francisco, but in the halls of the political elite’s cherished and oft-overlooked center of power—Washington, DC’s sprawling “administrative state”—for President Trump represented an existential threat to its denizens, who came to be known as “swamp creatures

Unmasking the Administrative State , which tells the critical missed story of the last century of political history: The ascendance of the theory behind and resultant growth of an administrative state that has supplanted limited constitutional government with the tyranny of unbounded anti-constitutional bureaucracy.

Marini illustrates the existential threat of the administrative state to our republic, exposes the regressive philosophy from which it springs, and argues for the reassertion of the founding principles to restore self-government.”

You could put a similar horrific crime site together on most major American cities (maybe with fewer mass graves, but competitive for mass shootings). And while yes, Mexico is riven with violent drug gang crime, my wife’s recent trip and the people she met didn’t seem to indicate it met a threshold of Absolute Chaos. Sure, stay out of certain parts of town, like you’d do here. But Guadalajara is a wealthy city, it’s growing, and its educational and internet infrastructure shames us.

These are, by no reasonable measure, enjoyable times for Lefty; no time really would be were they to occupy a fact-based Universe, am I right?

Anywho, c’mon; not only is Lefty Second Coming (and @richard lesiak’s pin-up boy) Beto O’Dourke melting faster than an ice-cube on Alabama asphalt, but he must now shoulder the burden of being White Privileged for offering a VPOTUS slot to the terminally clueless Stacey Abrams, whom you may know as the FIRST un-elected Governor of Georgia.

          It gets worse.

The Future Of The democrat Party, Alexandria OCRAZYo-Cortez, now claims she was just joshing about there being 12 Years To Mother Gaia Armageddon.

Not her fault (is it ever?); EVIL Righties took her Warmalista Alarmacyst slobbering literally when, after all, it was just dry humor + sarcasm and, you know, like, something about a sea sponge.

Long story short, your piling on may just trigger the realization that Lefty pols, like those listed above, see their base as a bunch of terminally bespawling addlepates that’ll swallow anything; something with which I can’t disagree…

George’s Son, serious question; why is Mexico as massively a failed state? NAFTA was supposed to funnel enough money into their economy to alleviate dire poverty. Now we after 35 years or so, we get their least educated central and southern, I believe, citizens.

Hence: your empty comments with “tasty” words plucked out of current/past news solely to titillate but never to explain or solve…. anything. Mexico has been a failed state since the creation of mesztizo’s (indigenous population & pure-blood Spanish) by criollos (pure Spanish administrators). That would be about 1590 or so, only one generation after Hernan Cortes. Money to/from Mexico ever since has been seized/spent by the corrupt, and never passed on to the worthy. Especially now. And -Yep, that DOES include NAFTA. That also DOES include AMLO’s noteworthy but feeble efforts -That “Hopey, Changey” thing ain’t gonna fly south of the border. More corruption, more poverty. CNN and ABob assured us the dossier was corroborated but it turns out the only true statement in fact was basically that Moscow IS in Russia. They do not however have a consulate in Miami that was supposed to fund the Collusion Delusion as Mr. Steele stated.
And now Karma whispers to each and everyone in the 17 intelligence(?) agencies “Lawyer up. I am coming.”
Cryin’ Chuck Schumer told us ‘never mess with the intelligence community. They have six ways from Sunday to get back at you.’
