John McCain suffered for these fools

McCain fought for the freedoms his critics use so cheaply

At some point, we will learn that Sen. John McCain has succumbed to his illness. We suspect that even Donald Trump will express statesmanlike words of condolence and respect.

He should! The man unleashed a torrent of slander against John McCain and his service to this country.

Dulcet words will not stop the Furies this flawed President unleashed from writhing in the gutter he dug for them. They have recast John McCain as an Enemy of the People for his Never-Trump apostasy. The Trumpers uber alles have weaponized their idol’s mean spirits and packed a suicide vest with extra vitriol.

John McCain is — get this! — a traitor!

Nixon Pardons McCain
NOT a fact. Provable falsehood. Total LIE!

“FACT!” blares a ubiquitous  Facebook posting. He’d be in Leavenworth federal prison this very day were it not for an executive pardon from Richard Nixon. Did you know that McCain started a fire aboard an aircraft carrier that killed 134 sailors?

All provably false but of course, the Trump bots don’t trust Snopes or Politifact. (They DO skew Left too often.)

Not since the old Soviet Union has history been rewritten with such contempt for the truth.

Believing what you want

A retired Air Force general playing talking head on Fox News called Sen. John McCain “songbird John” for allegedly providing information to the North Vietnamese while he was a prisoner of war. Fox will not invite this liar back.

As Trump himself would say, albeit in other contexts, Fake NewsOne military source reports:

The myth of “Songbird McCain” — a moniker attributed to accusations of collusion with North Vietnam — is not a new issue, though it has taken hold in the senator’s absence. (“McCain was convicted of treason and sentenced to death by firing squad until he was pardoned by Nixon,” one self-described patriot wrote with authority.)

This exchange on Facebook is typical:

Bill Elmhorst So why did McCain need a pardon from President Nixon if he hadn’t done anything wrong?

David Blaska No pardon from Nixon. Fake News.

Bill Elmhorst According to the liberal Snopes fact check.

Jeff Meyer Who trusts Snopes anymore?

Bill Elmhorst Jeff Meyer, David Blaska does. You can always trust Snopes to prove conservatives and Trump wrong about everything!

So Blaska posts the official U.S. Department of Justice list of those Nixon pardoned. No John McCain on that list. Waiting for the Trumpbots to claim U.S. Justice is a front funded by George Soros through the Clinton Foundation.

As for that aircraft carrier fire, a rocket on someone else’s jet misfired on the flight deck and started a fire, according to the History Channel. (They must be in cahoots, as well!)

No triviality is too ridiculous for the haters. Look at the huge home he lives in, says another, who posts a photograph of someone else’s home — it’s not even McCain’s — as if Republicans should not enjoy wealth. Another claims to be a Wisconsin employer who would fire any of his workers suffering from cancer who “can’t do the job” like McCain. (Drop an extra nickel into the collection box this Sunday, my friend.)

Hate his votes without rewriting history

McCain has incurred the wrath of Khan for voting to retain Obamacare. (A stupid vote, it was.) And for disinviting the President from his funeral. (He has that in common with the Bush family.) Maybe Trump should have thought twice before he uttered the ridiculous formulation that he liked heroes who weren’t captured. (As if Donald Trump was ever in harm’s way.) Teachable moment: Insult a U.S. Senator at your peril.

Your Squire has his own reasons for trashing John McCain, U.S. Senator. McCain co-authored, with Russ Feingold (no less) one of the worst pieces of legislation ever … put government bureaucrats in control of political speech. To determine who may speak, when they may speak, what they may say. Thankfully, the U.S. Supreme Court rescued the First Amendment in Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission 2010.

Maverick, frustrating and frequently wrong. But McCain’s heroic conduct during the Vietnam War cannot be turned upside down into a vicious smear because one disagrees with his roll calls.

Blaska’s Bottom LineDisagreeing with someone on one issue does not give license to trash an entire history. It would be like obliterating a memorial to a selfless volunteer at a Madison cemetery because you disagree with who paid for the stone.

At 8:17 am you wrote McCain is angry and bitter and it’s a shame he has decided to go out that way. The great pumpkin has turned the WH into a clown car and set the gop on the path of defeat. He sounds more embarrassed and ashamed than anything else. Not surprising that McCain doesn’t want pfrump at his funeral; donnie’s own wife won’t even hold his hand.

  2. 1. In my book McCain is not a hero. I apply the word hero differently than the press and many McCain supporters do. Fact: It doesn’t take a hero to be shot down and survive a POW camp, it takes courage; McCain has exhibited lots of courage over the years.

    2. Nothing in McCain’s past justifies the vitriol that is currently coming out of his mouth now that his days are likely numbered.

    3. McCain has become petty and vindictive and I have lost a lot of respect for him in the last two years.

I have a lot of respect for McCain. Hero, courageous, patriot; they all apply. He volunteered, served in a dangerous position, survived a horrible ordeal while retaining his dignity, and up until he picked Palin as a running mate, could have been president. If his 2008 campaign would have been run as the earlier McCain he would have been elected. I would have voted for him.

We will continue to disagree on his leadership role on McCain-Feingold, and the mess that Citizens United has made out of electoral politics.

His vote on the ACA repeal really showed how weak the R’s were, as trump/ryan/mcconnel had promised something better and cheaper (and had 7+ years to figure it out) yet had no plan if the ACA was repealed. And McCain realized what a mess repeal would have caused. He did what was best for his country at the time, party loyalty be damned.

And if McCain doesn’t want a cowardly, disrespectful draft-dodger at his funeral, that is fine with me.

John McCain once said. “the media is my base” and they were. Then, when he ran against a Democrat the media threw him down. Because they made him they could unmake him as well and did. Now you see the media is powerless to harm Trump because they not only didn’t make him, he showed them to be the liars they are.

Respectfully disagree; IMHO that title starts-n-ends with Hillarity’s monumentally inept two-time campaign manager, the eminently punchable Robby Mook.

Sometime down the road, her 2008 campaign will be a 500 level University class on how NOT to run a campaign, 2016 will be reserved for the graduate level.

Well Blaska; you finally did it. Wrote an article I can respect you for. As a card carrying liberal Dem I have a lot of respect for John. He ran a clean campaign for president and after he confronted that old bag about Obama being a Muslim I damn near voted for him. (Then Palin opened her yap and that changed my mind.) What I like most about the guy is no matter what was going on he had respect for the office of the president. Missteps; yep. Debatable votes cast; sure. But show me one other senator in office today that can match his life of service. So he doesn’t want that orange snow-cone at his funeral; it’s his call.
