Woke is what broke Sun Prairie schools

Equity was embedded in all policies

Your irascible host is a proud graduate of Sun Prairie Sr. High School, Class of 19xx … well, never mind. The farm village of our youth had a working blacksmith (he was village president) and a harness maker on Main Street. In the years since, the city has grown more populous than Manitowoc, requiring two brand new high schools in striking new buildings. The newest, SP West, opened in 2022 and serves 1,300 students 9-12.

Since our school days in detention hall, a bad case of diversity, equity, and inclusion has infected Sun Prairie’s public schools no less than Madison’s. The troubles afflicting them are a direct result of educators’ obsession with race.

Gilkey-Meisegeier

The city is in a justifiable uproar over the criminal charges brought against the dean of students at SP West of sexual exploitation of a child (two counts) and 13 counts of possession of child pornography — all felonies. Robert Gilkey-Meisegeier allegedly bought booze for under-age girls in exchange for nude photos, secretly took 200 photos of girls, and engaged in sex acts on school grounds. The dean of students!

He’s the third district employee to be charged with sexual misconduct involving students since December 2022!

 Not even a teacher’s license!

Nothing that we have seen dispels the notion that Gilkey-Meisegeier was a DEI hire. A long and distinguished academic career? The man didn’t even have a teachers license! The WI Dept of Instruction was quoted to say that Gilkey-Meisegeier had applied for a teaching license but failed to complete the necessary steps to be granted one! Plus, he was only 28 years old when he took the job in the 2023-24 school year! The school district said it waived away several previous arrests for drunk driving on the grounds that it is illegal to deny employment for an offense unrelated to his job duties. Was he the only applicant?!

From news media reports, the hallways at SP West gossiped about the man’s (alleged) predations over the last two school years. But it wasn’t school administrators who blew the whistle. It was the police department’s school resource officer. “We are investigating whether mandatory reporting protocols were followed,” Sun Prairie Police Chief Kevin Warych told news media.

This just in: Only days into the new school year, SP West high school has a new principal. Or acting principal. A Facebook group, Protect Sun Prairie Kids, demanded her replacement. She is the latest school staff to be put on leave to preserve what the district calls “operational integrity” during internal and police investigations.

The school board itself is bailing out over choppy waters. Board President Katey Kamoku is the third to resign from the seven-member board since November 2024. She followed two black board members out the door in protest over the ouster of the black principal at SP East, Renee Coleman.

 So much for equity

Ah yes, Principal Coleman. During an August 2024 staff convocation, Coleman mocked students, referring to some as “b**ch” and “a r**ard.” Coleman was also accused of repeatedly misgendering a teacher. (Live by the sword …) A Milwaukee law firm hired by the district to investigate found:

Principal Coleman stated that she could not be fired because she is black. That she would not get into any trouble for her bad behavior, and that she has gotten away with bad behavior in the past.

Coleman played the race card in her defense to the publication Madison365. Blamed the district for “relying solely on the testimony of the four white men.” The district has also hired a lawyer to investigate the Gilkey-Meisegeier case.

Truth is, most school districts are operated by Woke Folk. Teachers are indoctrinated in schools of education from Madison to Superior in the politics of identity and grievance. The SP district employs an assistant district superintendent in charge for “teaching, learning, and equity.” The teachers union elected this school board — as it does everywhere.

As far as we can determine, not one of the seven members of the SP School Board is engaged in private business. Another change from back in the day when successful farmers like John Drunasky, beloved veterinarian Doc Weigen, and wise old matron Sybil Mitchell served. Today in Sun Prairie, school board member Melissa Grayson denounced kindergarten curricula that “glorified Columbus and minimized the harm done to Native Americans. She campaigned toEmbed equity into all policies.”

As it happens, the treasurer for Madison’s school board is Blair Mosner Feltham. Her day job is “equitable multi-level systems of support coordinator for the Sun Prairie School District.”

Blaska’s Bottom Line: We don’t know what that is either but we suspect it is part of the problem.

Hasn’t DEI hurt more than helped minorities?

fear for our public schools. Time to get back to the basics, starting with the 3 r’s rather than prioritizing social engineering regardless of the cost.

“As it happens, the treasurer for Madison’s school board is Blair Mosner Feltham. Her day job is “equitable multi-level systems of support coordinator for the Sun Prairie School District.” you just can’t make up this stuff. Do they even have detention these days?

Nothing is mentioned pertaining to the Superintendent of Schools. Is that person involved? If not, why not?
