We get that spouses are supposed to be supportive. Stand by your man 🎵, and all that. But the villain —  well meaning though she may be — in this norm-busting presidential campaign is less Nurse Ratched and more Edith Galt Wilson. 

“Doctor” Jill Biden reminds us of President Wilson’s second wife, the one who said all is well while she hid old Woodrow, felled by a stroke, upstairs in a room darkened for yet another screening of Birth of a Nation. 

If Missus Biden had said to her husband that, at age 81, “It’s time, Dear, to enjoy our grandchildren — even that one in Arkansas,” the nation would be spared what amounts to a constitutional crisis. It is clear the doctor of education (another indictment of Big Education) is an enabler. After Thursday’s debacle on CNN, Jill handed the President of the United States a participation trophy. 

“You answered every question; you knew all the facts.” 

 ‘I don’t know what happened’

Reporting from the New York Times reveals that the President of the United States, being helped off the stage Thursday night 06-27-24, admitted: “You know, Jill. I don’t know what happened. I didn’t feel that great.” In fairness (this is all you’re going to get), six days of debate camp might wear out a Navy Seal! JFK had the right idea; get a nice tan, poolside at Palm Beach, before debating Tricky Dick. But JFK was 43 years old at the time.

“The problem is it comes and goes and, at this stage of life, people have good days and bad days and, unfortunately, he had a very bad night last night,” DNC heavy Elaine Kamarck told the NY Times

Elaine, what’s the over and under on Father Time marching on? What happens when he’s face to face with Vladimir Putin?! “Forget defeating Trump,” columnist Ross Douthat argues. The right-of-center columnist argues that a second Biden term is, on its own terms, as dangerous for the country as any Trump victory.

The chattering classes have been tsk-tsking Mitch McConnell and Bill Barr for bending a knee to Donald Trump, however reluctantly. Who are the Liz Cheneys and Mitt Romneys on the other side? Governors Gavin Newsom and Gretchen Whitmer have professed fealty, lest they appear like vultures feasting on roadkill. Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi have not broken ranks. Neither have the Clintons or the Obamas. (Could Jimmy Carter perform one last public service?)

Blaska’s Bottom Line: Twelve months ago, an obscure congressman named Dean Phillips dared whisper the President is playing Grandpa Simpson. No one took the hint. Another Minnesotan, name of Gene McCarthy, was the first to break ranks against LBJ in 1968. Richard Nixon — this time tanned, rested, and ready — won anyway.
