We are not the first to notice the ubiquity of the small dark-green over light-green tents that are popping up on college greenswards like so many April dandelions. Much speculation that the tents are another front in the George Soros campaign to bring down Western civilization.
Once source disputes that conspiracy theory. Whatever their provenance, Amazon sells this model for $35. “Portable, windproof, waterproof, and lightweight,” users are giving it 4½ stars of approval on a five-star scale. Amazon says their Camel Crown pop-up tents are recommended for “backpacking, camping & hiking, fishing,” and, it repeats (as if for emphasis) “Hiking.” Supporting anti-Jewish terrorism, apparently, is not covered by the warranty.
We checked out customer reviews, expecting to find dissertation-level testimonials from Columbia University students. Or something along the lines of: “Holds up well against spineless university presidents.” Or: “The very thing to pretend we are homeless like the displaced victims of Hamas … er, I mean, the Zionists.” Even: “Don’t come knocking if this tent is …”
But where is everyone getting those keffiyehs? Sure as Allah made little green apples, Amazon lists eight different makes ranging in price from $13.79 to $18.99 — affordable even for a work-study student at a branch campus! Amazon’s overall pick is the Luxns Military Shemagh Tactical Desert Scarf / 100% Cotton Keffiyeh Scarf Wrap for Men and Women. $13.99. Twenty-one colors to choose from. “Whether you’re looking for heavy-duty military shemagh [another word for keffiyeh] or fashion scarf, Luxns Shemagh Scarf Is perfect for missions, desert, camping, cycling, fishing, jungle, mountaineering, traveling, working, daily and so on.” Doesn’t mention disrupting higher education — daily or so on. Or hiking. (“Missions”? What missions?)
We are not surprised that over 800 were sold in the past 30 days. Or that an astounding 7,149 had rated it (4½ stars)! “These are badass,” testifies Anthony K., who purchased a keffiyeh in a black and brown. “Very chic!”

We’re seeing them worn around the neck, over the head, and as face masks. (Note the lower left of the photo above, captured by our correspondent on campus.) Apparently there are 15 approved ways to wear a keffiyeh, “a wearable symbol of resistance, freedom and independence in Palestine.” That’s according to the Hirbawi outlet, “the only kufiya [keffiyeh] still being actively produced in Palestine.” Wouldn’t you know it! They’re temporarily sold out!
Blaska’s Bottom Line: The hammer and sickle flag waving over Library Mall on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, on the other hand, looks home made. Maybe left over from the Dow Chemical riots of the 1960s.
