Conservatives are only responding to the culture wars
Bill Maher is an equal opportunity offender, God bless him. The comedian/social commentator would be denied tenure at the University of Wisconsin. He’d never get elected alder in Madison WI. He’d be thrown off network TV. Actually, he was, which is why he’s on HBO now. Maher pillories progressives and conservatives, sometimes when we deserve it.
If ever an environment was target rich, it is today’s Woke progressive agenda. In this episode, Maher takes off after trans-genderism — the latest trendy crusade of the New York Times and culture warriors. Humor is his scalpel:
“If you’re a man who wants to experience life without a pair of balls, you do not have to get surgery. You can get married.”
Werkes laugh track:
Maher notes that the ACLU frets that the impending overturn of Roe v Wade would disproportionately affect … gay people. “Women aren’t even listed.” We note the Dane County Board followed suit.
“If we can’t admit that in certain enclaves there was some level of trendiness to the idea of being anything other than straight, then this is not a serious, science-based discussion. It’s a blow being struck in the culture wars using children as cannon fodder.”
“I understand being trans is different. It’s innate. But kids do also have phases. They’re kids, it’s all phases. The dinosaur phase, the Hello Kitty phase. One day they want to be an astronaut, the next day you can’t get them to leave their room. ‘Gender-fluid!’ Kids are fluid about everything. If kids knew what they wanted to be at age 8, then the world would be filled with cowboys and princesses.”
As a kid, Maher wanted to be a pirate. He’s glad no one took the scalpel to his foot or poked out an eye.
Maher puts WILL’s lawsuit against the Madison school district’s “No tell” policy into perspective.
Blaska’s Bottom Line: The Werkes is adding Bill Maher to its Profiles in Courage roster in the sidebar at right (it’s at left for our dyslexic platinum subscribers).

If prounoun options had been made available to me as a young adult, I likely would have been a they/them as I didn’t take kindly to being a female. Now, as an out lesbian, I’m okay with being female. My guess is that a lot of teens are identifying as LGBTQ+ because it’s there as an option. No question. I’m not sure why anyone would identify as trans who isn’t though. That seems to be a bit more dramatic than questioning one’s pronouns.

LGBTQ+ is certainly an option, but it’s an option that is being relentlessly promoted by adults (especially teachers) who should know better. The average 8-year-old would have Twinkies and pizza for breakfast, lunch and dinner if it were an “option.” It’s the responsibility of rational adults to keep kids from making bad decisions–and teaching them how to make good ones–not to use them as pawns to satisfy their own political/social agendas. Yes, it’s true that a very small number of people suffer from gender dysphoria and may need treatment and/or surgery to correct that problem. But no one will convince me that the explosion of kids who “identify” as trans is the result of anything but the intervention of adults, “groomers,” if you will. And behind this is the preposterous notion that one can become anything ones wishes by merely “identifying” as such– another pernicious lie perpetrated by leftists who, it should become clear by now, suffer from their own mental disorder, one manifestation of which is the obsessive need to create new categories of the “oppressed” and “marginalized” for them to champion.

Not really buying it. Maher is like Mayor Dave: he smells opportunity.

An opportunist? I’ll take it. Shows we are winning. But some people are an iconoclast, as I believe myself to be. We can all play “hooray for our side” or we can think for ourselves. You?

It’s high minded and hopeful, but Mayor Dave and Bill “the 911 terrorists staying in the airplane were not cowardly” Maher are too cynical to receive the benefit of the doubt, IMO.

I have to ask this question: Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s the topic of transgenderism never came up. Nor did it in times before the 60’s and 70’s.
Why is transgenderism a topic of discussion now?
Reading history as far back as biblical times and even beyond those times, I cannot find a time where people wanted to change genders. If someone could point out to me times that this was a topic to the majority of the people, I would reconsider my question. But I doubt that someone will find that times.

Look up Tiresias, a character in Greek mythology who lived as both man and woman.

In many native American cultures, transgenders were given special status. Traditionally, they lived apart from the tribe but took on special spiritual or leadership roles, like naming young children, resolving disputes or praying for the sick.

Good for Bill, but it should be noted that he lifted that line about the world being filled with cowboys and princesses from Lily Tomlin.

Hey, thanks to Gary and David for the information on the Greek character Tiresias, and about the reference to transgenders in some native American cultures.
From these examples a broader point needs to be made. Why was transgenderism the exception to the rule rather than the rule in those societies? Why was it an anomaly rather than the norm in those societies?
From that we must ask: why is transgenderism being made the norm in our society?
More importantly, who is benefiting from this push to inculcate our children at such a young age to see themselves as being a gender that they were not born as? And, what do they hope to gain by doing so?

Exactly. The ancient Greeks and native Americans acknowledged the existence of transgenderism, they didn’t celebrate it or promote it or recruit kids to join the ranks of the transgendered. But then again those societies didn’t harbor hordes of leftist zealots on the lookout to create new categories of “marginalized” people to champion as a way of undermining traditional social values.

Sex/Gender are just a big bowl of alphabet soup, with the far side of the bowl male and the near side female. All of God’s little noodles are free to swim where they wish, but the Left keeps giving it a stir. To keep them from sticking, don’tcha know.
