Probe on possible hate crime enters 2nd week

$10,000 reward for information

Investigating a racist attack reported by a bi-racial woman in the midst of last week’s riot in Downtown Madison, police are now offering reward money. MPD issued this statement yesterday (06-29-2020):

The Madison Police Department continues to devote significant resources into this investigation, with assistance from the FBI. Anyone with information is asked to contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers at (608) 266-6014 or by computer at P3Tips.com. There is now a $5,000 reward for any tips leading to the apprehension and conviction of a suspect(s) in this case.

A organization combatting anti-semitism is offering another $5,000.

Offering reward money often indicates that investigators are coming up empty. Authorities had hoped to find surveillance video that would verify Althea Bernstein’s claim that she was sprayed with lighter fluid lit by four white men during a Defund Police/George Floyd protest at about 1 a.m. Wednesday morning (06-24-2020).

‘Classic Wisconsin frat boys’ blamed

The victim said her attack occurred at the intersection of State Street and W. Gorham Street, six or so blocks from the fire bombing of the  City County Building at about the same time, 1 a.m. Wednesday 06-24-2020. With charcoal lighter fluid as the accelerant in both instances.

A surveillance camera monitors that busy intersection (the well known restaurant Casa de Lara is on the SE corner). Sources say most of downtown Madison outdoors is on camera. For instance, authorities were able to release surveillance images of the molotov cocktail being thrown at the police chief’s office in the City County Building (shown below). Authorities are now describing the described location as “possibly” State and Gorham.

Kingsford

32-ounce bottle

To news outlets, Ms. Bernstein, age 18, described her attackers as “classic Wisconsin frat boys.” She said that as she stopped at the intersection the four young men — apparently carrying a bottle of Kingsford charcoal lighter fluid on their walk up State Street — approached her open car window, sprayed her with the accelerant fluid, uttered a racial epithet, then tossed a flaming lighter into her vehicle. It is not known if police recovered a lighter from the young woman’s automobile. She did not report the incident to police until approximately 16 hours later. Ms. Bernstein reported second- and third-degree burns — the most serious kind.

In addition to coverage from the major national media networks and network TV morning shows, the incident has received international notice. Prince Harry and Princess Meghan placed a 40-minute call to Ms. Bernstein. Even the Times of Israel. As the case drags on, some non-mainstream Internet commentators are casting doubts on her story.

Authorities put out this video of seven individuals captured on surveillance video fire bombing of City County Building

The Feds brought into this one, too

Madison Police have called in the FBI and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Increasingly, the feds are being called in to locally sensitive crimes. Most recently in Madison, it was federal authorities — not elected District Attorney Ismael Ozanne — who charged Devonere A. Johnson with extorting local businesses by threatening to unleash the rioters on them or get paid in beer, food and money. The FBI has also been called into other high-profile hate crime cases around the country in recent years, including the Jussie Smollett and Bubba Wallace NASCAR cases.

Sources say police have an active suspect in the fire bombing of the City County Building. In surveillance video image, six individuals surround a seventh who is in the act of tossing a fiery object at the building. Perhaps one of them is talking.

Who will collect the $10,000?

Hate crimes are of course heinous and need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

That said, I think most people, including law enforcement, are casting doubt based on what we know of the details. To say otherwise brands you a “racist” even when you’re basing your opinion on the facts in evidence. That mainstream media isn’t running with this story is also telling.

Glad to see the FBI is involved because if it is a hate crime, they will ensure that the perpetrator(s) is brought to full justice. If it’s fabricated, the FBI will also ensure that justice is served. Unlike the Dane County district attorney, the federal government doesn’t play around.

I just wonder about how the FBI interview with the victim is going. For instance, since there seems to be some doubt about the precise intersection where the assault occurred as well as the exact time, I would think that the victim’s phone could provide some clarity. GPS tracking of cell phones is a wonderful way to verify things, especially when synced up with surveillance video. They have found her car on video by now, right? I don’t think it’s possible to cross State Street without being seen on time stamped video. And I don’t think that it’s possible for four classic Wisconsin frat boys carrying a squeeze bottle of Kingsford, to walk up or down State Street for as much as a single block without being video taped as well. And since two of the frat boys were obliging enough to wear the uniform of the Boogaloo Bois (who knew they had local chapter here?), I would think they would have found something by now. Maybe we need to up the reward.

Tawana Brawley concocted her fraud in order to explain to her parents why she wasn’t where she was supposed to be. That’s the problem when tell a whopper like this. You lose control of the story and the next thing you know, Meagan Markle is calling you on live TV and reward money is offered. I’m actually beginning to feel sorry for her, because she is soooo fucked now.

There are countless race hoaxes that have been pulled over the years… many by young attention-seekers whose stories fall apart under federal scrutiny.

Time will hopefully tell the truth about this particular alleged incident. If true it is heinous and may the perps be caught quickly and pay the price.

If this turns out to be a hoax, it will be a huge stain on certain prominent individuals including a local prominent individual who has done good for this community and better hope it doesn’t turn out to be a hoax.

We know all of the protesting and rioting that has been happening in Madison is top-down state policy amplified by corporate social media and corporate MSM. What we’re seeing, and having to endure, is a battle between the 1% vs the 2-3% for cultural supremacy and sinecure positions within institutions.

That being said, law and order no longer exists in Madison. We can’t rely on and trust the city’s reaction to the attempted arson of the city county building and its story relating to Althea Bernstein. It seems very plausible at this point that the city is covering-up Althea Bernstein’s activities around 1am on 6-24-2020. Althea Bernstein is just another political opportunity for the 1% vs 2-3%. She has all the correct check marks: jewish, mixed race, female, white males are mentioned in her tale, and she’s loyal to the narrative. However, it seems she screwed-up her story and the prestige media hasn’t fully bought into it. Usually, when all the correct check marks line-up this stuff goes viral within hours to every phone on the planet. So, why not this time? There are 3 huge holes in Althea Bernstein’s story. It’s known she wasn’t really where she said she was. That area has security cameras everywhere, there is no footage of her claims. It’s known lighter fluid was used to douse the city county building at the exact same time she claimed she was doused with lighter fluid. It’s known she didn’t seek immediate medical attention.

In all fairness, 16 hours is a LOT sooner than the over FIVE_FREAKIN’_WEEKS it took for Shelia Tubbs (sic) to discover the potential of her August 2018 Campaigning While Black theme to sink in; changed her story of how the police handled it.

Bernstein? Do they even sell lighters that stay lit, or do you have to special order them for heinous RAYcist hoaxes?

Speaking of the lighter; wherefore art thou?

Only lighter that I know that can be thrown and stay lit, is a Zippo, which would be very good for fingerprints or DNA, if you could find one. And as I recall they cost something like $20, which seems like a lot to throw away, even if they are “classic Wisconsin frat boys” who are rich of course. It’s always the rich ones that turn out racist. Did she hand her phone over to the FBI?

Her little fairy tale makes Jussie Smollett’s seem almost plausible. Ever notice how Madison always feels the need to copy what’s happening in bigger and more prominent venues? When this county entered its first round of tearing down statues, Madison, much to its chagrin, discovered it had no real Confederate statues, so it settled for desecrating a gravesite for Confederate POWs. When the rioting started in big cities, Madison followed suit. Now it has to have its very own hate cime, fake or not.( Most likely the former.) Sounds a lot like over-compensation for feelings of inferiority.

Will Althea Bernstein join the pantheon of racial hoaxsters like Jussie Smollett and Bubba Wallace? Time will tell.
Is there any any video of her at the protest/riot? Why was she downtown at that time of night? Was there no damage to her car? I’m sure that the cops have asked those questions. They are pretty good at smelling a rotten fish.

At first I thought she engaged in self immolation for SJW social media likes and validation. It’s a weird religion with weird followers. The fact that she isn’t being thoroughly scrutinized tells us a lot.

“Is there any any video of her at the protest/riot?”

Video captured by Senator Tim Carpenter, the same night Althea Bernstein claims she was attacked, shows 2 females initiating an attack on him, the results of which required surgery. There is a still from Senator Tim Carpenter’s video in this article and the woman on the right looks like she is Althea Bernstein’s doppelganger:

        https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8455449/Democratic-Wisconsin-State-Senator-Tim-Carpenter-60-collapses-protesters-attack-him.html

So, is the FBI laying low until they have more evidence? Pretty clear there is no video evidence of the far right Boogaloo Bois who brazenly showed up in central casting attire at a far left riot.

I hope Althea Bernstein gets the justice she deserves. Just may not be what she wants. Of course, she is far from the first 18 yr old who thinks she is the smartest creature on the planet. Too bad she has essentially f’d up her future beyond all repair. Felons can’t be firefighters.

  6. From the first moment I heard this story, I thought it was quite convenient and I thought the story had holes in it; one possible hole is that there is only one pocket lighter that I know of that you can light, throw it and it will remain lit, that’s a Zippo lighter and they’re rather uncommon these days, they’re not cheap throw-away lighters, and it’s unlikely that someone would spend that kind of money on a lighter and then throw away in such a way.

I’m wondering if this might be another Jussie Smollett incident but I won’t render final judgement until all the facts are released.

  7. Robby White says:

The sequence of events is like something you would see on Mythbusters. What kind of lighter stays lit when you throw it? I would think that maybe a Zippo might have the best chance of staying lit after tossing it. Otherwise I’d think the lighter would go out without the fuel button being pressed. What about the interior of her car? Is it damaged? Where is the actual lighter too btw? I’m going out on a limb here but could it be that Ms. Bernstein was one of the arsonists trying to burn down the CCB? Maybe she panicked and realized she might be on camera and contrived up an alleged hate crime to give herself an alibi? Also, there aren’t too many frat boys around at the moment, you’ll be hard pressed to find four of them since the campus is closed. And since the pool of frat boys is shallow, you’d think one of the perpetrators would be caught by now. If this horrible act occurred, the monsters need to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. But there are too many variables, too many hairs to split in this tangled web. I think some smoletting might be going on.

From the first day I saw this story I thought it was BS. The “flaming lighter” was my main problem with it, along with the typical “frat boys” esp the ones in Hawaiian shirts. The campus is closed, why would there be a lot of frat boys around? Also now a week later and they have no suspects, no videos, no photos, no evidence of the lighter ever existing? Perhaps she got flash burns from being too close to the firebombing in which, coincidentally, lighter fluid was used.

That’s because she gave permission to Madison 365 to use her name and picture. She gave Madison 365 the initial interview, and oh how she (and they) must regret that now. There’s something oddly disconcerting about reading her nonchalant jokes about surviving a horrific assault. “I got toasted last night,” .is the joke a frat boy tells after burning himself with flaming shots of 151 proof rum, not the victim of a legitimate hate crime.

I saw a similar look at me racism story about a Native American girl whom had some smear written on her dormatory door last fall. That person was full of crap and so is this person.

This seems more likely from a person that wanted attention and to feel relevant. Please get this young adult some major mental health help.
