Today’s quiz: Does Mike Bloomberg want to be President so bad that he is willing to renounce his own achievements at the altar of identity politics?
After announcing his presidential bid, the former mayor apologized to Al Sharpton for his stop-and-frisk policy in New York. Apologize for what? Already dropping thanks to Rudy Giuliani, murder continued to decline — from 649 in 2001 to 335 in 2013, his final year in office. It did so even as city’s incarceration rate declined 39%, William McGurn reports in the Wall Street Journal.
One of the NYPD’s tools was stop-and-frisk, which allowed police to stop, question and search someone behaving suspiciously. It proved to be gun control for bad guys, as fewer criminals were willing to risk being picked up for carrying an illegal gun.
The rap on stop-and-frisk was that stops of African-Americans were disproportionate to their percentage of the population. That is true. But as the mayor pointed out, they were not disproportionate to the descriptions of the people committing crimes given by witnesses.
McGurn’s Bottom Line: “The truth is that Mr. Bloomberg’s policing saved lives, disproportionately African-American lives.”
The Democrat, of course, hates the Second Amendment. Can’t seem to distinguish between law-abiding gun owners and criminals. The Policy Werkes commends for his breakfast reading his hometown paper. The New York Times has a story up today headlined, “Religious institutions across the country are learning how to protect themselves. In Georgia, one small black church is taking action after a thwarted attack.”
Blaska’s Bottom Line: We’ll know we’ve achieved The Rapture when Al Sharpton apologizes for his race scam and Democrats swear off identity politics, cold turkey.
