A natural and political disaster zone!
We do have a heart here at the Werkes but it’s a loaner. Now that the news networks have rerouted their their on-air talent from Gaza to an equally disastrous zone, California, we want to say about empathy, We Gave at the Office.
[UPDATE: O.K., No one should suffer except the guilty.]
Fresh from making over-the-road truckers pay off the college loans incurred by grievance studies majors, President Biden promises to cover 100% of California’s firefighting bill and help the Malibu millionaires rebuild. Sorry, but after the third or fourth multi-millionaire laments the loss of his latest architectural pleasure dome to fire, the indentured servants are keeping their tear ducts dry as the Santa Anna wind.
An episode of This Old House a few years ago explored the ingenious methods being used to rebuild homes in Paradise, California. And expensive.

Paradise (so ironically named) is the town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains that burned to the ground in the Camp Fire conflagration in November 2018, killing 18 people. One of the new fire-proof building techniques examined on PBS are air intake vents that close off at high temperatures to prevent embers and flames from entering the attic. Does Menards stock these things!
It occurred to the indentured servants watching on the b&w Philco at the time that maybe people shouldn’t rebuild in Paradise CA. Maybe they should not have built there in the first place. The town was only incorporated in 1979.

No, end-timers, God is not punishing Hollywood for making Disney Woke. But one might one think that a state that outlaws (in effect) gasoline might consider putting the kibosh on building amidst highly flammable chaparral. California might also consider electing Republicans.
Because the state elected its other natural disaster: Democrats. Two days after the National Weather Service warned Angelenos that strong winds and “extreme fire weather conditions” would soon threaten the city, what does the Democrat(ic) mayor of Los Angeles do? Fly to Ghana for the swearing in of that African country’s president. Ghana!?
“But this isn’t just about Karen Bass,” reports Bari Weiss’ Free Press:
A great city can survive a bad mayor, or even a series of bad mayors. This is a story about the failure of California to prevent, or capably mitigate, a long-predicted catastrophe, and how a state that was once a model of good governance came to prioritize the boutique concerns of ambitious politicians over the basics of what government must do.
The Free Press notes that L.A. allocated $1.3 billion to combat homelessness last year. Los Angeles funded its Fire Department at a little more than half that — $837 million. A budget that has since been cut by $17 million. Or the department’s DEI hiring practices, resulting in a shortage of fire fighters. Result: a lot more homeless because FIRE!
Already in the November 2024 election, California voters — and those in New York — swung towards Trump more than any other state — by 12 percentage points, according to a Newsweek analysis. And California is Kamala Harris’ home state! The Werkes remembers the (un)prophetic words from that Peter Pan of progressivism, John Nichols, who says cities are “the Democrat(ic) heartlands of the U.S.” As such, its mayors will “put guardrails on Trump.”
→ Even our favorite African sulcata tortoise has been displaced!
Blaska’s Bottom Line: The entire premise of the party of Democrats is that government is the solution. Bad schools, shootings, shoplifting, sidewalk squatting — now Big Fire! Henry Grabar concluded in Slate magazine: “Voters are fed up with lousy metropolitan governance.”

Sorry Dave, Malibu is on the fringe of the conflagration. Pacific Palisades is taking the brunt of it, as outlined in today’s State Journal–a mobile home park on the beach was destroyed. When I was at UCLA, I lived in the area. My HS girlfriend, an astronomy prof at UCLA lives in Brentwood, next to the Palisades and has evacuated. Sure some big homes have burned, but the vast majority are middle class homes! It is horrendous.
Yes, I’ve driven through that area. Must admit I wrote Malibu because of its alliteration with millionaire as well as its proximity to Pacific Palisades. BTW: Ronald Reagan lived there before buying the ranch. Brentwood is not exactly trailer trash, either.
A read from the Wall St Journal about the entire middle class Palisades neighborhood that was destroyed–NOT million dollar home!!: https://www.wsj.com/us-news/a-rare-middle-class-paradise-in-l-a-was-swept-away-by-flames-dec045c3?st=PaiSGN&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink
Average value of a home in Pacific Palisades is $3.4 million.
Brentwood is like many other urban areas. It has rich enclaves and those for the less hoity toity. Kamala’s home is a couple of blocks from my HS girl friend’s home. The old GF is a Virginia farm girl who was a professor at UCLA–NOT a million dollar career!! I know first hand. I was a prof at UW and never made nearly enough to be called rich. I currently live in a townhouse that is valued at only about 200k. Enough with the class warfare crap. THAT is what progs do!!
‘Indescribable’: Paris Hilton returns to charred remnants of her Malibu home
Who cares about ONE person?? How about the hundreds in the mobile home park that was destroyed in the Palisades??? STOP the class warfare!!
I lived in LA’s San Fernando Valley between 1984-1988. Normally, the breeze comes of the ocean cooling things down. But sometimes, as in the last few days, winds change and come off the desert–VERY hot and dry. I was a fellow at the UCLA Molecular Biology Institute, and one year, we had a 12-15 sculptor placed in front of the building. It was made of some resin and the next Santa Ana melted it!! That is how hot they are!!
Damn good points about rebuilding in Malibu. May I assume from what you say that you would also apply the same standards to Southern Florida ehere probably half of his homes are in the same situation as California’s, namely located in such precarious places they’re going to have to constantly be bailed out by us. Are you sending the same message to Republican Governor DeSantis that the Jig Is Up for all the states who want the rest of to pay to rebuild ocean front mansions and they should take care of their own problems rebuilding homes that should never have been built?
Yes. They can get insurance on the open market. No different from insurance in floodplains. But Biden is going to subsidize them, again.
WHAT!?!?!? Insurance is EXPENSIVE and getting harder to get in FL!! A former colleague of mine who retired and moved there had his home destroyed by a recent hurricane. INSURANCE DID NOT REBUILD IT!! He now lives in his cabin in Northern ‘Sconsin…..AND Biden is HISTORY!!
Come on Dave. You have been better than this before…..

The market is saying DON’T BUILD THERE!!! How many times does your house have to burn down? Get blown away? Drunk drivers pay more for insurance — if they can get it! Conversely, how much more are you willing to pay for your insurance so that high rollers can build at the edge of the volcano?
Northern “Sconsin” was his fall back. NOT where he wanted to live. You and Blaska continue to ignore my points that NOWHERE IN FLORIDA OR NOW NC are safe from hurricanes. And NOWHERE IN CALI South of SF are free from fires. Even Colorado Springs is not free from fires!! Where shall we live that is risk free???? Should we all pile into Madistan and wait for an F5 tornado???

Thankfully Biden will not have access to the checkbook here in a couple weeks. Although I feel bad for people in natural disasters–hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, wildfires, etc, if you choose to live in those areas that is your choice and the rest of us should not have to pay for it. Sadly we’ll end up paying for it anyway as insurance rates are bound to Skyrocket.
Thankfully this is the last gasp of progressivism.

Dear LieSack:, “Invoices, Entries and Check Stubs!” The horror! The humanity! And not one of the 34, count’em! 34 counts is a misdemeanor! And now Judge Merchan has made legal history when he put Donald Trump above the law by being the first US citizen to be found guilty of 34 felonies, felonies I tell ya! and get no penalty for even one of the felonious invoices, entries or check stubs.
Not a dime in fines, not a minute in jail, not a moment of community service… why is that Anonymous, LieSack and You Knew?
I’ll wait right here for your explanation.
Judge Merchan’s rationale for Trump’s sentence for felony falsification of business records:
“It is the legal protections afforded to the office of the president of the United States that are extraordinary, not the occupant of the office,” the judge said.
“The considerable – indeed, extraordinary – legal protections afforded by the office of the chief executive is a factor that overrides all others,” Merchan said.
Those protections, the judge said, are “a legal mandate, which, pursuant to the rule of law, this court must respect and follow.”
Now this is interesting.
I knew Blaska before he was a RINO wrote,
It’s signature significant* when someone is asked to list the 34 felonies that Trump was convicted of the reply that comes back is to list the 34 guilty verdicts and not even one of them in that list is an actual felony crime, NOT EVEN ONE! You can’t fix the level of blind ignorance that causes a someone to parrot that list as being a list of felonies, as in crimes.
*Signature Significance: Signature significance posits that a single act can be so remarkable that it has predictive and analytical value, and should not be dismissed as statistically insignificant.

In an era where the lame-stream media gives credence to the faked murder of 20 school children in Sandy Hook, Connecticut and then covers up Hillary Clinton’s child sex trafficking ring at a North Carolina pizza parlor, one cannot be too careful about believing the news. Nevertheless, in May 2024 it was widely reported from California to South Dakota to Nebraska to Mississippi to Florida to New York that Donald Trump was convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records stemming from a hush-money payment to a porn star on the eve of the 2016 election. I know that it’s hard to square these convictions with Mr. Trump’s record of business and personal ethics, but I have simply been unable to find a source to contradict the reported result of the Manhattan, NY trial. The verdicts remain under appeal.

Geeze, talk about a parrot; Polly want a cracker?
These specific business record “falsifications” as you call them were misdemeanors (a nonindictable offense) and have never ever been used to charge anyone before in this way (anti-Trump LAWFARE doesn’t care about actual law) plus the statute of limitations had already run out on the alleged misdemeanors. The “committed in furtherance of felonious acts” is pure pre-crime legal hogwash, they can’t even identify what these felonious acts are and you parroted it as if it’s fact. There is not felony crime statute on the books that was given to the jury to match the so called evidence to determine if Trump had actually committed a felony. Plus, the jury didn’t even have to unanimously agree on guilt like all other juries have to. This was pure unadulterated railroaded witch hunt LAWFARE that was intentionally fabricated to specifically Get Trump. The absurdity of the charges, the conduct of the Judge during the trial, and the absurd jury instructions will get this thrown out. I predict right here and now, as many legal scholars have done, that the entire case and verdict will be completely overturned with prejudice either by an appellate court or SCOTUS. You really did confirmed to me that you’ll swallow any anti-Trump narrative that’s fed to you and that looks like Trump Derangement Syndrome to me.
Go watch some of Alan Dershowitz’s legal seminars on this topic and actually learn something useful about the law instead of being a useful idiot parroting anything that supports your anti-Trump bias.
As usual, climbing down into the abyss of absurdity to converse with someone that uses the moniker “Anonymous” is always a bad idea.

Awww, such a victim. You sound like a snowflake that’s snowflaking hard.
