Woke progressives have an anti-semitic problem.
Three years after the Palestinian terrorists butchered 1,200 noncombatants, including little babies, and took 251 hostages — many of whom were tortured and died in captivity — what is the reaction on the Woke Left?
“Democrats Have a Bill Maher Problem,” declares The Nation magazine, employer of our own John Nichols, head cheerleader for Bernie Sanders and Madison WI socialist Francesca Hong.
Because Bill Maher doesn’t blame Israel for existing. “It’s a counter-attack in a war that’s been waged on Israel since 1948 based on the ridiculous premise that Jews don’t belong in the one place they are indigenous and indisputably their ancestral homeland. Hey genius, they are the Indians in this scenario.”
Maher is today’s Mark Twain and winner of the eponymous award — over Donald Trump’s objection. But The Nation takes Hasan Piker’s side, the influencer-friend of Francesca Hong, Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar, and Michigan’s Abdul El Sayed. We quote from The Nation:
Establishment Democrats obsessing over Hasan Piker’s every move seem to have no issue talking to Maher, despite his decades of open bigotry. … The panic is ostensibly related to a list of Piker’s past comments that his detractors claim were misogynistic, anti-semitic, and anti-American.
Maher, while discussing the supposed rise in anti-semitism in America, …. also encourages similarly horrifying comments about Gaza from his guests.” — The Nation
What can you expect from ‘detractors’?
Let’s parse that verbiage for a moment. Only “his detractors claim” Piker’s statements are anti-semitic. Anyone who does so is “obsessing.” In any event, anti-semitism has only “supposedly” risen. How dare Gaza (read: Hamas) be criticized? Drive by Temple Beth El here in Madison WI and note the uniformed police presence. Antisemitic violence worldwide in 2025 killed the highest number of Jews in 30 years, according to CNN.
BW: Mayer’s “open bigotry” consists of not wishing men, trans or not, in the girls’ locker room. The Nation, obviously, is not among Hasan’s “detractors.” Even though Piker denied the atrocities committed by Hamas, calling allegations of sexual violence “rape fantasies” or “rape hallucinations.” … and that “Hamas is a thousand times better than Israel” and that he “would vote for Hamas over Israel every single time.”
Not just a few
• In Michigan, on the very anniversary, Abdul El-Sayed’s U.S. senatorial campaign issued a fund-raising e-mail blaming Israel. Israel is as much a threat as Iran.
• In New York, Zohran Mamdani released a four-paragraph message “acknowledging” the anniversary but “all but one sentence of that message was devoted to Israel’s ensuing military campaign in Gaza.”
• Madison-area House member Mark Pocan blames Israel for “targeting Gazan civilians.”
• Francesca Hong appeared with Piker; now she is campaigning for the Democrats’ nominee, David Crowley.
• A Green Party candidate challenging House member Glenn Grothman was arrested 10-08-26 following a road rage incident in Mequon WI that included a profanity-laden tirade over Israel.
The essential Victor Davis Hanson concludes that:
“The Democratic Party has been transmogrified into an Islamist-sympathizing, socialist Jacobin movement. The ancient bane of anti-semitism — for centuries a reliable symptom of a society’s inner sickness — has resurfaced even in the United States. This time, it is fueled by the DEI lobby, socialists, and Islamists.
Just as anti-semitism rocked Jeremy Corbin’s U.K. Labour Party.
Blaska’s Bottom Line: When America was attacked at Pearl Harbor, the allies did not feed Japan until we nuked two cities and the emperor surrendered. Israel, by contrast, fought Hamas truck hijackers to feed Gaza. We ask the question Bill Maher asked: given the choice, in which city would the average LGBTQ+ social justice warrior prefer to live (pre-10-07-23)?
