Taxpayers are paying for county exec’s virtue signaling!
Never mind making Greenland the 51st state. Let’s admit Madison WI back into the union. If there was ever any question that Madison is a sanctuary city, County Executive Melissa Agard put out the welcome mat. We’re not talking about standing in the church door to bar Tom Homan from raiding the sacristy. Exec Agard won’t even share data with federal authorities about illegal immigrants held in the county jail for felonies or multiple misdemeanors.
Withdrawing from State Criminal Alien Assistance Program foregoes a $370,000 federal payout over four years. That’s on top of the cost of housing the inmates. That doesn’t sit well with Agard’s challenger in the April 1 non-partisan election, Stephen Ratzlaff, who said today:

Dane County taxpayers are currently shouldering an estimated $2 million annual burden for inmate housing costs that could be offset through federal programs. At a time when our residents are facing rising property taxes and increased cost of living, we need to pursue every opportunity to reduce unnecessary spending.
“The current administration’s decision to exit this program represents a direct impact to our taxpayers,” Ratzlaff said in a press release. “I am calling on County Executive Agard and the Sheriff’s Office to provide full transparency regarding current jail operation costs and to explain why they have chosen to forgo federal support that could help offset these expenses.”
Wisconsin Republicans are working on legislation (AB 24) requiring counties to inform the U.S. Department of Homeland Security of suspects detained on felony charges who cannot prove legal residency — or lose state shared revenue.
Quoted by WI Public Radio, State Sen. Julian Bradley, R-New Berlin, said: “We know there are sheriffs in our state that are not interested in complying with federal law. Our message to them is, ‘Do not put your personal politics above the safety of the citizens who elected you.’”
Blaska’s Bottom Line: This is how Democrats yield the immigration issue to Donald Trump.

Read my book, “Fractured”. It gives some of those statistics plus Trump’s agenda before he was in office.
The “free money from the Feds” argument still doesn’t work for me. And judging from the overwhelming approval of the spending referendums no one cares about property taxes going up either. Rather I should say no one cares while they’re in the voting booth. Lots of people will care when their rent goes up. The local pols will turn it around and blame the evil landlords.

“Lots of people will care when their rent goes up.”
There are people who work for a living, and people who vote for a living; the former will care, the latter will not.
