Blaska Policy Werkes

David Blaska, going out of his way to provoke progressives in Madison WI to make America safe for democracy!

Attention, People with a Penis!

I hear you roar, People with a Vagina,
in numbers too great to ignore.

The first three of us growing up in that farm house outside Sun Prairie WI were born within two years. To save time, mother plopped David, Mike-boy, and sister Betty into the same tub for splish splash.

David, Betty, and Mike

Eventually, the future news reporter asked a tough question. Pointing downward, he asked, “Why doesn’t Betty have one of these things?” That may have been the last bath time for all three of us.

The Head Groundskeeper does not recall any structured sexual education growing up. No “birds and the bees” talk. One hour in high school freshman biology class, by which time the farm animals, surreptitious Bettie Page pin-ups and other kids’ lurid tales provided their own sex education.

"Gender is a spectrum!" — 4th grade lesson, Madison public schools

Sometimes called ‘men’ and ‘women’

However mis-informed, Blaska is no risk to anyone at the Bergdorf Goodman lingerie department. (Nor is he a customer.) But Woke Madison has moved far beyond basic Sex Ed 101. And earlier! Have our public schools veered into proselytizing?

A woman (we think) signing herself “concerned public school teacher and mother,” copied state legislators on two presentations she claimed she was required to present to 4th and 5th graders in Madison public schools.

These slides that I am required to teach are espousing ideas that neither I nor most citizens in the United States believe should be taught to young children. A recent Washington Post-KFF survey found that 57% of adults said a person’s gender is determined from the start.

Unlike adults who can deliberate and discuss these issues expansively, young children do not have the knowledge base to critically analyze these issues. Lecturing masses of young children who can barely read and write about material neither age-appropriate nor widely agreed upon indoctrinates rather than educates our children.

— Concerned public school teacher and mother

Making Sense of Puberty,” Madison public schools, grades 4 & 5

Gender Identity,” Madison public schools, grade 4

"I can understand the differences between gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, and sex assigned at birth using age-appropriate language." — 4th grade lesson, Madison public schools

Ace MMSD spokesperson Tim LeMonds tells the Werkes, “The two slide decks are used in our 4th and 5th grade classrooms. All parents are notified weeks in advance and provided the option to opt their student out of participation with these lessons.”

Blaska is having trouble with today’s Bottom Line: We Boomers were appalled by the b&w images of southern segregationists aiming fire hoses at “Negroes.” We learned smoking could kill you. We quit driving while drunk. We let gays go on their merry way. Our lawn is now biodiverse if not totally organic. Is this one more big lesson for the shop class of ’67?

Yet … this campaign (for that is what it is) seems much ado about a tiny percentile of the human race. 0.6% of those ages 13 and older. How many cross dressers can there be in fifth grade? “People with vaginas” remains a bridge too far. Yet, the number of young people who identify as transgender has nearly doubled in recent years, according to a UCLA study. Cause and effect?  This lesson plan does seem more virtue signaling than anything else. Do 9 and 10 year olds really want to hear about  … THAT?

An educational campaign last year in the Sauk Prairie school district seems about right. After a teenager committed suicide, yard signs sprang up. They read, simply enough:

“BE KIND”

Where are YOU on this issue?

  1. Does the left really think they can “have their way”, and still live in a free country for long? Our increasing weakness and disorientation invites China to believe they can take us over at some point. Given its history and obvious confidence, why would it believe otherwise?

It seems that there will be a very small number of children at 9 and 10 years old who are already experiencing ambiguous sexual feelings, and I think that it would be a good thing to constructively help them understand that that is fine and not abhorrent in any way, such as, from time to time, incorporating that message inconspicuously in stories used in lessons.

However, the way that the District is going about doing that with these in-your-face charts, again, shows it is far more concerned flouting its woke chops than actually helping innocent kids.

The kind of ham-handed stuff in the pictograms seems to me to be more intended to carry the woke flag to the political mountain top than accomplishing anything salutary for the sexually ambiguous child.

A tiny percentile of the human race can’t walk, but it’s ok to let kids know that these people exist and that we should try and allow them to be included in our society to a reasonable degree. A tiny percentile of the human race is born intersex or don’t fit, for whatever reason, neatly into any number of gender norms and… PULL YOUR KIDS OUT OF SCHOOL, THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!

If a kid is old enough to learn about sex they’re old enough to learn about anything I saw in those slides.

Throughout human history people have existed that don’t match traditional gender norms. Why is it so outrageous to just let people be and act how they want? Or to be honest about the existence of these people?

If any of you think there’s been an increase in divergent gender expression in recent years, I encourage you to advocate for big-government to regulate the chemical industry. We have lots of chemicals and hormones in our environment that we have no idea the effects of. Republicans have been far too hands-off in deference to pro business and anti regulation ideology.

And if it became fashionable to have this condition there would suddenly be tons of able bodied kids claiming they had it, backed up by feeble minded teachers saying it must be true.

Yeah, no accounting for fashion. What do I or anyone care if a kid wants to be how they want to be? Teachers saying that gay and trans people exist is not telling kids to go out and be who they’re not. Plenty of decades of the opposite though – lots of gay people had to hide who they were to conform with what society said they have to be.

Agree with you on gay people conforming and also societally reinforced career paths for men and women. The danger of course is the rebound effect and people still be pressured to do something they don’t want to do.

And age is a huge factor for exposure. Kids just suck things up. It’s very difficult for them to interpret anything neutrally. Heck most adults struggle with that.

I remember having to bring in newspaper clippings of the 1972 Olympic terrorism as a 2nd grade assignment. I shake my head at that. Bad teacher.

Seems like most of my elementary school teachers were bottom of the barrel.

Be honest about the existence of these people—fine. Let people be and act how they want—fine if they discover that on their own. The issue is when schools and teachers implicitly or explicitly encourage kids at impressionable ages to think they’re a gender that they clearly aren’t. Or make it trendy to be non-binary or gender fluid when they clearly aren’t. And then hide this from the parents. There’s been a concerning number of kids buying so deeply into this that they ask for gender reassignment procedures before they can legally buy a beer. And some of the clinics they go to push hormone cocktails on these kids, screw them up bad, sometimes beyond repair, and occasionally drive them to suicide. There are medical ethicists out there becoming more aware of this and recoiling in horror. You should too if you’re that concerned about what chemicals we’re all being exposed to.

I agree with White Hills below that this issue is mostly a waste of time, except where parental control is concerned. It’s culture war bait from the left dangled out to replace the one about gay marriage—now that many conservatives are accepting of gays, the left has made trans and non-binary folks the cannon fodder. That way, they can continue to portray their enemies as bigots.

That’s the issue here. There are few people under the age of 18 mentally mature enough to make a decision as life-altering as one like this. Many boys between 15 and 23 think they’re invincible and have little perspective on how one bad choice can be life-altering. I know I did.

Mordecai, I’m totally fine with protecting parents’ rights to know what’s going on with their children, and to have a say in how their schools approach sex ed. I think we should respect parents’ rights, which is why parents, in consultation with their doctors, should be able to do what they think is best for their children.

I’m not a doctor, I don’t study this topic, and I don’t know the facts from the propaganda regarding puberty blockers. I don’t know the facts from the propaganda regarding nose jobs either, but kids are allowed to get those, lots of them do, and Rs aren’t up in arms about that. I wouldn’t choose either of these (given my current lack of facts) for myself or my kids, but why should I tell other parents what to do?

As you correctly point out, I’m concerned about pollution, but I don’t have a choice but to ingest polluted toxins – they’re everywhere. I support people’s rights to put whatever they want into their own bodies, and by extension the rights of parents to control that for their children, as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else. It’s not equivalent.

You assert that there’s a nefarious movement to “implicitly or explicitly encourage kids at impressionable ages to think they’re a gender that they clearly aren’t.” But all I see is people saying that gender divergent people exist and are allowed to be themselves in public. This is not “culture war bait from the left”, this is people being themselves, other people being polite and factually correct in acknowledging that these other people exist, then Rs flipping out and making a huge deal of it to rile up their base.

It sure did seem kind there were a lot more gay people after our society began to accept gay people for who they are. Was there a widespread pressure campaign to brainwash kids into being gay? No. And there’s not one in this case either. If it seems like there are lots of people suddenly being gender divergent, perhaps, just like with gay people, this has always existed and we only see it now because of the freedom people are finding to be themselves.

It makes no sense to be pro parents rights but anti freedom for parents to elect gender affirming health care if they want. If you want to argue it’s child abuse, then feel free to factually engage with the medical community on that front. I could think of a lot of things to call child abuse too that are not currently classified as such. Let’s outlaw circumcision. I bet someone could drum up some propaganda about botched circumcisions and people who regret having one. We’ll put The Gotch on that job.

But the R campaign is plainly not centered on parent or children’s rights, that is just the cover story sales pitch. It starts there, but the jerks can’t resist the chance to be jerks and “stick it to the libs” and infringe on their rights. Starts with “parent control”, then ends with statewide (soon to be nationwide if Rs get back in charge) mandates that take away liberal parents’ rights to choose what they want for their kids and their their schools.

Advance apologies for the long reply, Rollie.

“I’m totally fine with protecting parents’ rights to know what’s going on with their children, and to have a say in how their schools approach sex ed.”

Then you should be fine with Florida’s Parental Rights in Education Law, unfortunately and propagandistiscally renamed as the Don’t Say Gay law. Despite big media efforts to portray it as bigotry, all it says is that public educators cannot teach sexual topics to kids in third grade and below, and that there are penalties for doing so. Most parents, when they learn the truth about it, wonder what all the fuss is and why everyone is against it.

“I think we should respect parents’ rights, which is why parents, in consultation with their doctors, should be able to do what they think is best for their children.”

So do I. I also think that when parents see the bad effects of puberty blockers and the like and decide to pull the plug on them, doctors should respect their wishes and not gaslight them into subjecting their kids to more. Plenty of testimonials about this out there, and they’re concerning.

“I’m not a doctor, I don’t study this topic, and I don’t know the facts from the propaganda regarding puberty blockers. I don’t know the facts from the propaganda regarding nose jobs either, but kids are allowed to get those, lots of them do, and Rs aren’t up in arms about that.”

Real stories from real people detailing physician pressure to subject young kids to life-altering hormonal “treatments” aren’t propaganda. They’re despicable acts by medical professionals who took an oath to first do no harm. If they’re willing to violate that oath for whatever reason, we should all be concerned about what they and other medical professionals would do because they subjectively believe it’s right. Nose jobs are superficial procedures that don’t screw up a persons brain chemistry irreparably. Puberty blockers can and have.

“As you correctly point out, I’m concerned about pollution, but I don’t have a choice but to ingest polluted toxins – they’re everywhere. I support people’s rights to put whatever they want into their own bodies, and by extension the rights of parents to control that for their children, as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else. It’s not equivalent.”

Puberty blockers and other hormonal treatments, like the toxins you mention, are chemicals pushed onto the populace by industries that couldn’t care less about who they harm in the process as long as their shareholders get paid. Are you not concerned about that? I am.

“This is not “culture war bait from the left”, this is people being themselves, other people being polite and factually correct in acknowledging that these other people exist, then Rs flipping out and making a huge deal of it to rile up their base.”

The trans folks got an amount of press equivalent to their percentage of the population until the gay marriage issue was behind us. Shortly after, the left pushed for them to use whatever bathrooms they wanted and took it from there, ignoring the horror from parents about biological males sharing the same dressing spaces as their daughters, and similar issues. Now, this is all over the press because leftists are insisting that it’s another civil rights front when it would have resolved itself if left alone.

“Was there a widespread pressure campaign to brainwash kids into being gay? No. And there’s not one in this case either.”

There has been a notable uptick in middle and high school kids declaring themselves trans or gender fluid when they aren’t, but do it because it’s trendy or because they think it’s expected. It started around the same time lessons like the one our host posted made their way into public schools. It’s not a stretch to say there’s a correlation.

“I could think of a lot of things to call child abuse too that are not currently classified as such. Let’s outlaw circumcision. I bet someone could drum up some propaganda about botched circumcisions and people who regret having one.”

Back to my previous comments about nose jobs. They’re superficial and don’t screw you up for life. Puberty blockers and the like can and have. And if public schools are creating a mindset in kids that makes them easier prey for malicious doctors and the pharmaceutical industry, we should all be worried.

“But the R campaign is plainly not centered on parent or children’s rights, that is just the cover story sales pitch. It starts there, but the jerks can’t resist the chance to be jerks and “stick it to the libs” and infringe on their rights.”

Don’t think that behavior is isolated to the right (and I don’t condone it anyway). Plenty on the left have their version of it, and it’s called “kill off the righties”. Shortly before the last midterm election, I overheard a conversation where the loudest of the group called for the federal government to cut off all funding to states with Republican governors so their rural, right-leaning population would slowly die out. (It took a terrific amount of restraint for me not to confront and tell them what a terrible person they were and that those they wanted dead were my friends, family, and countrymen.) And that is far from the only time I’ve heard sentiments like that—it’s just the most recent. The idea that this sort of vitriol is common enough, on both sides, that people will declare it in public is deeply disturbing to me. And it’s why some people are arming themselves. Perhaps we all need to back up a step or two.

“Florida’s Parental Rights in Education Law… says is that public educators cannot teach sexual topics to kids in third grade and below”

Cue exactly what I was talking about. Start with something reasonable, then the jerks keep pushing further. The updated don’t say gay law extends through the 12th grade. And there’s no reason to think this is over yet. So now kids that are clearly old enough to learn about sex are barred from learning what their communities and parents think they should. Why can’t local parents decide for themselves what sex ed should look like in their schools? Because Rs said so.

I also distrust the medical community, but this issue is clearly a cherry pick of concerns. This is the classic tactic: take a grain of truth, then twist and turn to achieve political (not logical or factual) goals. This is plainly not about safe pharmaceutical practice and is targeting one specific population under the facade of “keeping kids safe”.

So sure, advocate for a tightening of all pharmaceutical practice, why just pick on trans health care? Literally the majority of college students are on psychoactive performance enhancing drugs. It’s not just trans people using questionable chemicals – but they’re the target aren’t they? Oh, but not because Rs are bigoted, certainly not for that reason… they just care about these kids… but for some reason R parents seem to be ok with giving their own kids a chemical edge in school… the doctor said it’s ok… the doctor gave a “diagnosis” after all… and for some reason every rich kid heading to the Ivy League has a diagnosis and an Rx…

If Rs don’t want to be called bigoted, they could start by using some degree of logical and philosophical consistency.

“The updated don’t say gay law extends through the 12th grade.”

Yeah, and I don’t quite agree with that either, but I do believe that parents generally are and should be better equipped than schools to teach kids sex ed, as mine were. There is a disturbing trend of public education trying to wrest traditional parental responsibilities away from actual parents, and this topic is just another facet of it. The extended law is probably a step too far, but it’s not going to stop me from voting for DeSantis. So I’ll turn your own question back on you: If there are a significant number of parents out there that don’t want their kids taught these topics, then why should schools insist on doing otherwise?

“I also distrust the medical community, but this issue is clearly a cherry pick of concerns. Your opinion. Dozens of similar stories about gender transitioning pressure/regret, suicidal side effects of these treatments, medical ethicists sounding the alarm, and leftists reflexively screaming bigotry don’t constitute “a grain of truth” to me; they represent a dangerous precedent in the medical/pharmaceutical industry that too many people unquestioningly trust because they’re supposed to be the experts. I already have one friend (likely) irreparably damaged by opioids that were prescribed like candy and do not want more of the same for puberty blockers or the like foistered on every kid who thinks they’re having a gender crisis.

“So sure, advocate for a tightening of all pharmaceutical practice, why just pick on trans health care?”

Because malicious industries that harm children have historically been a fertile ground in which to plant seeds of change. The left does the same thing with the gun industry screeching about them targeting weapon sales to kids (which has a degree of truth but won’t solve the overall gun death problem). Few people care when mature adults who’ve thought it through want to transistion.

“…but for some reason R parents seem to be ok with giving their own kids a chemical edge in school… the doctor said it’s ok… the doctor gave a “diagnosis” after all… and for some reason every rich kid heading to the Ivy League has a diagnosis and an Rx…”

I have no idea where you’re getting this. Every rich kid in an Ivy League school is a Republican? The student rhetoric coming out of those schools lately suggests otherwise. Every rich kid in an Ivy League school has an Adderall prescription? How did you determine that without violating HIPAA?

“If Rs don’t want to be called bigoted, they could start by using some degree of logical and philosophical consistency.”

Ridiculous. That’s like saying the US is bigoted against Uyghurs because we’re focusing our efforts on the Ukraine invasion. You don’t let the barbarians through the city gates in hopes that you’ll get a better shot at the general. Spreading your efforts to every last frontline usually means losing the war.

When the left demands equity in men’s sports with trans men(women) the transformation will be complete. At a young age boys and girls learn there is a difference.

Soon the public schools won’t be teaching reading, writing, math, science and social studies and America will fall even further in education rank.

Worse than indoctrination, this is proselytization, with the goal of discouraging reproduction. It is both a means of control, and exclusionary of anyone who dares challenge the narrative. Criminal persecutions (not a typo) of middle school students who dare address someone with the wrong pronoun, as is happening in Kiel, is enforced Newspeak. Using Title IX as a cudgel to enforce conformity is reprehensible.

Wow, and now we have a conspiracy theory that this is a grand plan to reduce American reproduction? Don’t worry, our chemical companies are polluting enough that our fertility rates will decline with or without gay or trans people. For thousands of years we’ve known that the primary threat to human existence is greed, not gender-divergent people.

It’s just plain polite to address someone how they wish to be addressed. If your name is Robert and I know you want to be called Bob but I call you Robert anyway, I’m being a jerk. Jerks love letting everyone know they’re jerks.

And guess what? When non-jerks accidentally call someone by the wrong name or pronoun, it’s no big deal. They just say “Oops, sorry about that Bob.” The police don’t need to be called, because nobody is harassing anyone else.

Jerks too often can’t help but wade into the harassment-zone, and that’s when external forces intervene because we have laws against harassment. But don’t worry – now we love electing jerks to public office, so I bet in no time we’ll let the jerks harass anyone they want.

This nonsense is a waste of time. It’s ridiculous. I refuse to pay attention to it. There are more important things to concern oneself with.

Conservatives should ignore this one. It will self immolate. It’s just too bizarre.

  11. One thing I do not see addressed here clearly is the issue of gay vs. trans. The research from England (U.S. so-called experts do not seem interested in researching their claims) shows that the vast majority of kids initially attracted to the trans idea are in fact gay. Shifting to trans RELIEVES them and their parents of the stigma of being gay. There is a sizable segment of the gay community that is opposed to this insane fad and cult and sees it has homophobic. Andrew Sullivan has raised this issue very effectively. I’ve got gay members of my family who are absolutely appalled at what schools are doing to kids who are gay and may initially conceptualize their feelings in crude terms that schools instantly “affirm” as a “gender” identity.

On that last point, it is worth asking what a 10-year-old even means when he says he is a “girl,” or feels like a “girl.” What other than the crudest and simplest fashion-based stereotypes could such a child mean by that claim? What is the image of “girl” he has in mind that lends itself to medical money-makers ready to carve him up? Or have-educated teachers ready to serve them up to those medical money-makers. It is time to stop with the LGBTQ+++ and time for gays to reclaim LGB alone.

I mean “half-educated,” (because they are on this topic and that is being generous.)

One more point. I see in these comments some of the usual demonization of this as “right-wing” from the defenders of this genital mutilation of the young. Neither Sullivan nor my gay relatives are right-wing. Nor are the growing ranks of “detransitioners” like the brave Chloe Cole. It is cheap b.s. to dismiss this the way you do. This is not an issue of right vs left no matter how desperately the media juggernaut tries to depict it that way.

One group of “right wingers,” however, are on your side in spades. I speak of the Iranian regime, which in fact “transitions” gay people in exactly the same way as our trans-infatuated medical profit-makers do. Iran is at least honest in saying this is a way of saving homosexuals from damnation by making their sex conform to their sexual preferences. Would that our own cultish child mutilators could be so honest.
