Fly under the radar in Ukraine, not Dane County!
Catching up with our jeremiad posted before the election on April 5. We excoriated seven candidates for Dane County Board who blew off the WI State Journal and the League of Women Voters with “No Response.”
Both venues asked softball questions and promised to print verbatim the first 200 words in response to each. No filter, no interpretation. Free advertising! You’re asked “Why are you the best candidate for this office?”and printed under your name is “No response”? (The Werkes’ three exclamation points of despair: ! ! ! ) Translated: If we had a platform, we’re ashamed of it. This stealth was a conscious strategy — one we trust has been thoroughly discredited.
Six of the seven stealth candidates most deservedly lost: Amanda Noles in Madison District 14 in an open seat, Carlos Umpierre in Waunakee #25 against a strong incumbent in Tim Kiefer, Bill Brosius came within 5 points of incumbent Michelle Doolan in Cross Plains #28, Jerry O’Brien in Belleville #30 against incument Patrick Downing, Herb Taylor against incumbent Patrick Miles in McFarland #34, and Andrew McKinney v. incumbent Melissa Ratcliff in Cottage Grove #36. Only Jeff Weigand in #20 Marshall squeaked by (margin: 33 votes); may have helped that he was an incumbent, the only one of the seven.
Rural and suburban Dane County, we’ve got to think, was ripe for rebellion against Woke experimentation on our school children. The Left is losing its War on Cops. The county is giving $1,000 bonuses to its employees and referring to jail inmates as “residents.” Weigand may have profited from his crusade against onerous Covid mask mandates.
Blaska’s (almost to the) Bottom Line: Candidates, you got to stand for something — besides election. An opportunity lost.
Europe must win this one
We’ve said it before, that Ukraine is not NATO does not prohibit, say, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic from sending troops and arms. Position them directly in the way of Russian forces advancing south on Mykolaiv and Kherson. Return the favor of tanks ordered to the streets of Warsaw and Prague by Russian’s vassals during the Cold War.
Flyovers by France’s Mirage 2000Ds strafing that 8-mile long column of invaders. The British Navy ruling the waves in the Black Sea. Don’t fall for his nuclear bluff; Putin and his oligarchs know that they are not immune from vaporization. The defeat must be total and non-negotiated. That includes the return of Crimea (which arguably WAS Russian) and massive reparations.
We’re barely a third of the way through the year but is there any doubt Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelensky will be man of the year? Our silver goes to Elon Musk.
