Woke progressivism, like rust, never sleeps. Madison city government now wants to invite “BIPOC” people to kvetch about how Madison was mean to them. The city’s Equal Opportunities Commission, trying to justify their budget, would then report by December 31 with “detailed recommendations on how the city could address past wrongs,” the WI State Journal reports. C’mon, people, say its name: reparations!
Evanston IL, another college town, is already riding the reparations guilt trip.
Your tax dollar will scrub dusty attics in search of “historic wrongs, including the city being built upon the homelands of the indigenous peoples of the region.” Don’t forget urban renewal! Twelve (12) historic wrongs in all! A perennial favorite is the jail (ahem) disparity. Police led by a black sheriff and a black police chief keep rounding up black folk minding their own business. White kids are stealing cars, too. They just don’t arrest them, apparently.
Your guilt doesn’t lift anyone’s boat
Watch the interview with Columbia U professor John McWhorter. The good Prof says what Blaska has been saying for several years now. Us white crackers could get down on our knees, flagellate ourselves with reeds, sprinkle ashes, recite Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. But how does that self-indulgent guilt trip help young Javon read?
In Prof. McWhorter’s Q and A. with the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco 11-08-21, the author admits that he has prepared for being canceled for denying that the USA is, foundationally and fundamentally, racist. He describes Robin diAngelo’s White Fragility as the most stupid book ever written. Critical race theory is, indeed, being taught in our K-12 schools, McWhorter confirms. This is how Commonwealth describes the 59-minute interview:
Since the killing of George Floyd in May 2020, Americans have been engaged in a vast discussion on the state of race in America. Renowned linguist and award-winning writer John McWhorter feels this debate and discussion has been dominated by a “woke mob“ that subscribes to theories that are illogical, unreachable and, ultimately, racist in their impact, however unintentional those effects may be. In his book Woke Racism: “How a new religion has betrayed black America,” McWhorter argues that an “illiberal neoracism,” disguised as antiracism, is hurting black communities and weakening the American social fabric.
Marginalized but elected nonetheless?
“I want to take time to pause and acknowledge past injustices that have happened in the city of Madison to allow healing,” said EOC member Ald. Brian Benford, 6th District. “As a black person who has been marginalized in this city …” The guy is in his second run as an elected alderman — a decision maker! And that’s what he calls “marginalized”?!
→ The EOC meets at 5 p.m. today 01-13-22. Give them something to really feel guilty about!
Blaska’s Bottom Line: Benford wants to “create a safe environment where we can talk about past injustices.” Uh, Brian, that would be Madison WI. Those who seek to disagree will have to look elsewhere for their safe spaces.

The ridiculousness is just getting started.
So because Blacks are arrested and incarcerated at higher rates than their population everyone who is Black deserves free money!? Arrested and incarcerated by a system that includes and has included Black police chiefs, Black police officers, Black D.A., Black judges, etc.
I want to know who the Ho-Chunk “pushed off” the land that is now Madison.
These people are nuts and we are going to be taxed to death to pay for their crazy schemes.

Clarification: not blacks, African-Americans. Black immigrants (eg, Nigerians) do very well here. And if they throw in “brown” people you know they haven’t been near an IT department in 20 years … Indian immigrants are living the American dream. You could also point to the Patel’s success in the motel/hotel business.
Any kind of reparation program is a bandaid on a wound bleeding profusely.
I’ll say it again … free long acting birth control and abortions would give the AA community a chance to regroup. Now it is an endless cycle of kids having kids.
Benford is a pretender. Look to those who have been quietly “making the donuts”. Kaleem Caire.

It must kill you when I tell you that Ronald Reagan was the only US President to codify and fully implement a reparations program. The $20,000 and full apology given to Japanese-American internment camp inmates in 1988 set a horrible precedent for you. Perhaps you could start a grass roots movement to rescind that payment.
There have been other reparation efforts geared toward civil war blacks, holocaust victims, Indians and even altar boys. Sherman unsuccessfully promised 40 acres and a mule. Natives were given reservations and casinos.
In the religious arena, certain dioceses around the country are taking your parish donations and giving it to clergy rape victims.
You sit in your sandbox and complain that you are not responsible for institutional sins and therefore you should not pay anything. There is a long legal and religious tradition that says otherwise.
You have chosen to draw the line on Black reparations.
Olson Johnson drew the line in a slightly different way: “All right, we’ll give some land to the n****** and the chinks, but we DON’T WANT THE IRISH.”

I’m up for giving $20,000 to persons enslaved in the U.S. but actuarily, they’d be 157 years old by now. In any event, FDR’s internment of Japanese was a national policy. Enslavement was a state-by-state policy. Wisconsin and its sister Northwest Ordinance Territories were slave free from formation by that 1787 law. The national government eradicated slavery. Plus, I’m not giving any money to Oprah Winfrey. Still waiting for my free car.

In other words, the clock starts with the passage of the 13th amendment and we should have legislated reparations at that point, but since we didn’t, you are out of luck.
But the 13th amendment did not guaranty full rights for black citizens. That was not done until the Civil Rights Act of 1964. So maybe you got your dates wrong and the clock starts ticking in 1964.
You write: “In any event, FDR’s internment of Japanese was a national policy.” A national policy through executive order, sanctioned by the court but ignored by Congress.
“Enslavement was a state-by-state issue.” Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, Alexander Hamilton, and John Adams would disagree. By not explicitly banning slavery, they subordinated slavery to the larger goal of securing unity. In other words, they punted. Franklin writes on how the issue could only be resolved by a civil war.
And it sure sounds like Roger Taney made it a federal issue in the Scott decision in 1857. It was Taney who wrote that the Founders’ Constitution regarded blacks as “so far inferior that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect.” He ruled that all people of African descent, free or enslaved, were not United States citizens and therefore had no right to sue in federal court, any federal court, regardless of geography or slave status.
So the Japanese get reparations because they don’t violate your arbitrary statute of limitations. And Blacks don’t get reparations because of some bizarre Federalism argument. It’s to bad you will never get the chance to argue this in front of the Supreme Court. The issue will never be resolved. But John Roberts would rip you a new one.

Speaking of “arbitrary statutes of limitation,” what are yours? The reparations made during the Reagan administrations were meant to right wrongs that happened only a little more than 40 years before and they were targeted toward the victims themselves. If the case for reparations is so solid and the moral imperative so glaring, why are the Democrats (except for the usual contingent of race hustlers) reluctant to say its name? Could it be that even they recognize that the vast majority of Americans would–understandably–refuse to pay up for wrongs committed many generations ago? And what would you call 50 years of Affirmative Action policies if not slow-motion reparations?

Reparations will NOT remotely fix what is wrong with a certain percentage of the black populace and logistically would be virtually impossible to equitably implement without creating tremendous resentment and division for *many* years. It would become a deadly societal malignancy. Just think it through.
The topic of what is ailing the black culture and how to resolve, has been addressed extensively by learned people of all colors, most notably and forcefully by smart/wise black people. Their consensus is not pro-reparation.
It is naive to think that reparations would be the end of the desire for revenge and the sense of entitlement by a certain faction of black people, and that faction will continue to make enormous trouble way out of proportion to their numbers.
In short, reparations would be just another coup for radical left anarchists who are determined to burn the system down despite having nothing superior to replace it with and the radical demands/censorship/cancelling/violence would continue ceaselessly.
The system is broken because of corruption, indoctrination, bias MSM, citizen apathy, and reparations would just accelerate the destruction of the republic as we know it.

Dave, why don’t you run for mayor? Regardless of the outcome, you’ll have months to bang away on the issues that most of Madison’s pols prefer to ignore or politicize strictly from a far left perspective. I don’t think most of Madison, which I believe is comprised largely of moderates, agrees with the left; it’s just that between the libs and media, they make far more noise.

Don’t worry D.G.; these old farts have been trying to drive me out for a long time. You’ll notice the one’s who do all the flapping never use their real names. You ask: “how much in reparation and how much should it be taxed?” The Indian issue of reparations was resolved by giving them casinos. I think I made it very clear that the slavery reparation issue would never be resolved.
But there are groups of people who were harmed by the government and not fairly compensated who deserve reparations. Those of us who spent two years in the jungles of Vietnam while you sat on your student deferment ass deserve reparations. We’ll call it the chicken hawk tax. Perhaps ypu can get together with Donald Trump and starr a Go Fund Me page.

All I can say is that there are black doctors and nurses that I work with every day that I very proudly serve them as well as the doctors and nurses of every color, race and religion that is America. I play a small part in making sure that they have the tools that they need in serving the people that rely on our organization to give them the health care they need.
The Bible says something like this: “I knew you before I knit you together in your mothers womb.”
If Almighty God created life at His will, who am I, a simple person of meager means able to contradict what Almighty God wanted to create?
I love these people. They help their fellow members of the human race of all colors, races and religions with their health care. I am proud to help, in my small way, serve any and all of those people with the passion and commitment that is humanity.
Been doing that for most of my life. I love my fellow man, I only want the best for him,
But I understand that sometimes my fellow man is a jerk, or an ass, that needs to be locked up in prison for the crimes he has done.

Nothing is stopping guilty white liberals from paying reparations right here and now. There are plenty of black charities that will be happy to take their money.
If you feel responsible for wrongs that you didn’t commit, then by all means, pay up. I don’t, and I refuse to.
