If Madison progressives can play the race card, so can the Werkes. Who supports police body cameras? Alds. Sheri Carter, Charles Myadze, Barbara Harrington-McKinney, and Syed Abbas — all people of color. Who opposes, Greg Gelembiuk, Brenda Konkel, Public Safety Review Committee member (and UW student body president) Andrew Mitnick — all white as Wonder Bread. Or how about Mayor Satya? Yet to use the bully pulpit for fear of her progressive base.
The Common Council is slated to vote Tuesday 07-06-21 to begin equipping police with body-worn cameras. The technological tool that helped convict Derek Chauvin in the George Floyd death.
Leave it to Madison to over-think breathing. The official agenda item is #80 (out of 151!), however, merely “accepts” the report of the Police Body-Worn Camera Feasibility Review Committee. It authorizes no expenditure. The report is 57 very dense pages circumscribing when and how police can use body-worn cameras (BWC):
The Committee concluded that in Madison’s unique police reform environment, and under the carefully crafted policies set forth in this Report and Model Policy, it is worth at least experimenting with BWCs, to assess whether as applied here BWCs can on balance be sufficiently beneficial to justify their cost. The Committee therefore recommends starting with a rigorous pilot project [in the North police district], and then fully assessing the impact of BWCs in practice here in Madison before moving on to full department-wide implementation.

Blaska’s Bottom Line: The City must hear from someone other than Dr. Gobbledygook, who is all over this issue in opposition. It will be a close vote, nonetheless.

I’ll probably be sorry I asked, but why would any right thinking citizen be opposed to a digital recording of exactly what happened?

Those opposed are afraid the REAL truth will come out, that MPD IS NOT the problem.
They are against BWCs because the chief and MPD support them.
Maybe MPD should say, “Hell no, we don’t want them!”, then Brenda, spoiled brat Mat, Greggy, Heck, Furman, Foster, Evers, and the other lily-white cop-haters will say, “We want them!”.

All’s I know is that I sure wish Matt Kinney had been equipped that night in 2015 when Tony Terrell Robinson reached the crest of his drug-induced crazy. We might have seen how he kept charging Officer Kinney from the darkened top step, all the way down to where Kinney justifiably feared for his life. Robinson may have been young, but he sure was big… A Taser, much less a fist-to-the-chin, was NOT gonna change the outcome of that few-seconds-long deadly charge.
Oh -And am I the only one who noticed that his constantly absent mom fled to CA or some-such, to avoid her blood-sucking “sudden” relatives wanting a share in the, what, 4 million pay-out by the City o’ MDSN ?
Yepper, these are needed and wanted now.

I see that Brian Benford posted a rationale for the close vote on this issue today… “We need to ensure that we have great officers…not cameras.”
Ummm…. Seems to me the $400K outside study Madison citizens paid for to critique the MPD (after TT Robinson rampage) said MPD is a pretty Darn good organization. So why be afraid of BWC to bolster that study? Or would it make using race rhetoric/ID politics too difficult and unreasonable?
