David Blaska, going out of his way to provoke progressives in Madison WI to make America safe for democracy!

Whither Trump’s movement?

With Trump, Republicans were ready to move to a populist message and even toward somebody who came across as a bit of a bully delivering it. ...

Gerald Seib in the Wall Street Journal,Where Trump came from and where Trumpism is going.”

Donald J. Trump won  the White House with a populist and nationalist message and has led a consequential, tumultuous presidency.

That presidency effectively collapsed in flames on Jan. 6, when Mr. Trump sent a crowd of his supporters to the Capitol to stop the constitutional transfer of power to his elected successor. That crowd turned into a mob that ransacked the seat of American democracy and tried to hunt down its elected leaders. Republicans, and the nation as a whole, now are left to ponder what went wrong — and whether such an ugly and violent ending was inevitable.

Chris Christie, who went from Trump rival to informal Trump counselor, thinks that he knows how things went awry. “One of the big concerns I’ve had all the way through the Trump presidency — and I’ve spoken to him about this directly — is that his behavior has obscured his message and his accomplishments,” he says. “And … as time went on it was discrediting them.”

Ultimately, a movement born of many Americans’ legitimate concerns about the effects of economic globalization and feelings of alienation from the nation’s political, cultural and financial elite was overwhelmed by Mr. Trump’s need to find enemies and grievances.

Gerald Seib’s Bottom Line:  “In short, the problem has been [Trump’s] ‘negative populism,’ which sought scapegoats and defined itself by what it was against, rather than a’positive populism’ defined by what it was for.”

Oh, heck. I’ll throw an opinion out there:

Trump’s Presidency will be studied and Monday-Morning Quarterbacked for decades to come. But I don’t believe The Ends justified The Means. I suspect Trump’s most enduring legacy, will be uniting and lighting a fire under so many Democrats….a “rebound effect”, if you will.

The Trump movement isn’t going away, despite what the Brit Humes, the Wall Street Journal, and others say. Don’t recall the exact numbers, but as of yesterday, Trump’s approval rating is still high; and a majority of Republicans say they will not vote for any rep or senator that voted in favor of impeachment.

“Ultimately, a movement born of many Americans’ legitimate concerns about the effects of economic globalization and feelings of alienation from the nation’s political, cultural and financial elite was overwhelmed by Mr. Trump’s need to find enemies and grievances.”

He didn’t have to look for enemies and grievances; they came looking for him. Trump exposed the ugliness and moral bankruptcy of DC politics. He was single-handedly fighting off an aggregate that was trying to bring him down from BEFORE his inauguration. The press never gave him a break, minced every word he uttered, and didn’t give him credit for his multitude of accomplishments. Big Tech censored him and his supporters. Fake dossiers, federal law enforcement that overstepped its bounds, celebrities with graphic depictions of violence. It never stopped.

Trump was never a statesman and he was never groomed to be a politician. Most people who voted for him knew that he’s brash and rude, but we overlooked it because he very publicly exposed and fought the corruption and stupidity of the “Swamp.”

Most people who support him have always been more aggrieved with the ruling class’s behavior than with his. I’d rather have an outspoken leader who puts America first and does actual things that benefits the country than a polite fake who has sold us out to the higher bidder and conducts business as usual.

As we speak, reportedly more than 9,000 illegal immigrants from Honduras are headed this way, no doubt because Joe will be giving them, and millions more like than, amnesty (Gee, what happened to the pandemic?) He said prisoners, which includes those of heinous crimes, should be able to choose their own gender, which gives them access to the prison of their choice. His cabinet is filled with DC insiders & lobbyists. And that’s just the beginning.

But hey, Trump’s tone is more offensive.

Ask yourself what politicians have to gain by distancing themselves from Trump and protecting the status quo. Follow the money. Mitch McConnell’s and his wife’s dealings with China, for example.

Let’s stop pretending that these are noble servants who care about the integrity of the office and the Constitution. Most are self-serving and will sell us out if it benefits their needs.

How true. Which is why we should look at the events of Jan. 6th with unbiased eyes. The patriots who stormed the Capitol had the courage to ACT on their well-founded belief that our political leaders are “self-serving and will sell us out it it benefits their needs.” Or as one of them so eloquently put it, “Our congressmen should be sh*tting their pants!” (qtd. in The New Yorker, Jan 18th). Though the destruction and loss of life was much greater during the summer’s BLM riots, does anyone recall the FBI swinging into action to arrest the looters, vandals, arsonist, murderers with the same zeal (and cheered on by the MSM) with which they’re now pursuing the “insurrectionists” and “domestic terrorists”? Was the National Guard called out? Was a wall built to prevent future desctruction?

Gary no doubt refers to the same “patriots” who urinated and spread feces in the hallways and offices of the U.S. Capitol, including Statuary Hall.

If BLM had done the same thing it would be characterized by the Left as “performance art” (kind of like the primitive daubings on State Street businesses that appeared in the wake of last summer’s looting and vandalism and excused as “justified anger.”

Trump’s approval rating remains virtually unchanged. 47-49% I think?

Didn’t George W. Bush spend the latter part of his presidency mired in 25-30% ratings? Liberals are in love with him these days, after raging for 8 years about a stolen election and how he was “literally Hitler.”

Yes I think depending on the pollster, it’s between 43 and 49%.

Sickening, isn’t it? You’d think liberals would be thrilled with Trump’s record as a no-war president.

      Liberty,

      Well said and right on.

Hang on and buckle up, brudder. Keep your powder dry, … this too, shall pass.

Most regular, normal Americans love President Trump because he’s NOT a craven, corrupt crony politician. He fights back. He’s a bumptious, blue-collar billionaire who not only loves his God and Country, but ALL his fellow American citizens, as well.

      This is most certainly true,

This quote from Seib’s article could apply to countless people and groups in politics, academia, society, etc, regardless of where they are on the ideological spectrum. In particular it applies to numerous individuals and groups on the left, who seem to be all about tearing down, dismantling, and destroying:

“In short, the problem has been ‘negative populism,’ which sought scapegoats and defined itself by what it was against, rather than a ‘positive populism” defined by what it was for.”
