The New York Times is under fire for its coverage of how an incoming Tennessee cheerleader was dumped from the team after the release of a three-second video in which she used a racial epithet. Times reporter Dan Levin gave a strikingly positive account of how Jimmy Galligan waited for years to release the video to do the most harm to Mimi Groves.
The article “A Racial Slur, a Viral Video, and a Reckoning,” is being cited as the ultimate celebration of the cancel culture in its tenor and lack of balance. Everyone agrees that the use of the n-word was a terrible thing. However, the same standard does not seem to apply to professors who use racist and insensitive comments. It would seem that, even if students are not accorded the same protections for faculty, universities should offer them the same opportunity for redemptive change.
After all, college is meant as place for personal growth for students.

Are the proponents of cancelling the cheerleader the same folks demanding leniency for those who have committed crimes as teenagers, arguing that their brains have not fully matured? Perhaps (in the name of consistency) the cheerleader ought have had to endure a restorative justice experience and have her thought crime expunged.

I think it’s more than just “generational imbecility” (though there’s plenty of that). It’s also beccause they learned early on from parents and teachers that screaming and stamping their foot invariably got them whatever they wanted. And still does–so why bother with rational argument? Apparently saying the forbidden n-word is enough to get you erased from history but bonking a Chinese spy has no ramifications except for a fleeting moment of public embarrassment.

This begs the question: Just how effin’ STOOPID does Lefty deem their target audience.

Not much different than the conservative version of “cancel culture” where democracy is frowned upon and the will of the people is only something to be reckoned with when agreeable. Can’t help if she made a statement accepting responsibility for her actions, after all it seems trump and his supporters don’t accept responsibility for anything, preferring instead to seek pardons for their uncivilized and illicit behavior.
