Caravans of cars loot and shoot downtown Chicago
Mayor Lightfoot: ‘This was an assault on our city!’
She vows: ‘No shelter for the criminals!’
— Over 100 arrested; 13 officers injured —
After Chicago’s downtown Loop, Magnificent Mile, and Gold Coast are looted, Mayor Lori Lightfoot — of all people — gets tough!
“We are coming for you. I don’t care whatever justification was given for this; there is no justification for criminal behavior, ever. You have no right to destroy the property of others. Our people deserve to be safe. Our businesses deserve to be safe and our police officers deserve to do their jobs without rocks being [assaulted].”
Mayor Lightfoot says no more Catch and Release:
“I call on our district attorney and our courts to step up, make your best case! They need to be accountable and not cycled through the system. We can’t continue to allow this to keep happening.”
“We are walking up in shock this morning to looting and criminal destruction on the Loop, the Gold Coast, and the Magnificent Mile … and North and Clyuburn. Today, dozens these individuals engaged in what can only be described as brazen and criminal looting and destruction. This had nothing to do with legitimate, First Amendment expression. … These were not poor people trying to feed themselves … This was straight-up felony, criminal conduct.
“We will not let our city be taken over by criminals and vigilantes, no matter who they are and what they’re doing.”
⇒ If only Madison Mayor Satya had her spine!
Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown:
“Many of these criminals are emboldened. The officers are making the arrests. But they get released, many charges are dropped. Not many of those were prosecuted to the fullest extent. There were no consequences.”
Police Supt. Brown tracks the beginning of the mayhem (roughy transcribed):
Sunday afternoon, police responded to a call of a man with a gun. He fled but fired at officers pursuing. Officers returned fire and took the suspect [with a lengthly criminal record] to the hospital where he is expected to survive. After the shooting, a crowd gathered, “fueled by misinformation.”
Social media encouraged looting downtown. 400 officers were dispatched to downtown. Car caravans headed into the Loop. “This was not an organized protest, rather an incident of pure criminality.” As of now Chicago police have made more than 100 arrests for looting. 13 officers injured.
In last seven days, 9 officers have been shot at. “What we are seeing is violence against police.” A civilian and a store guard were hit by gunfire; they are in critical condition. CPD has recovered 149 guns this weekend.
As officers arrested a man carrying a cash register he looted from a store, another car drove by and shot at the police. CPD has recovered 6,189 guns.
Friday through Sunday, there were 31 shootings throughout the city, three of which were murders.
“Criminals took to the streets with confidence there would be no consequences for their actions. I refuse to allow these cowardly acts to hold our city hostage. We will not stand by while our beautiful downtown is turned into some place to fear.”
“I pledge to pursue these offenders to the fullest extent. A heavy police presence will in place;” 12-hour shifts and all days off have been cancelled. Curfew downtown access 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
“This is a beautiful city, the Chicago Police Department will not allow theses selfish, criminal acts to destroy what generations of hard work have built.”
Mayor Lightfoot gets the last word: “I want give my sincere thanks to our professional police department.”
Blaska gets the Bottom Line: This is the turning point. A black mayor and black police chief decided Chicago would not be guilty white Madison or Portland, Oregon.
