Sheriff Mahoney opposes Madison tear gas ban

Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney issued this statement today:

As the Sheriff of Dane County and as a Madison resident I feel it’s important to point out that should the Madison Common Council pass a misguided ordinance limiting the use of chemical and non-lethal impact munitions, the council will have tied the hands of Madison Police in the use of munitions that are part of a host of de-escalation alternatives to deadly force.

In my 41 years with the Sheriff’s Office and 14 as Dane County Sheriff I have seen and participated in a number of incidents where the deployment of less than lethal munitions resulted in the saving of a life and where without that tool deadly force would have been the only alternative.

I would ask that you and other alders think very hard and seek the insight of Acting Chief Wahl before rushing to pass a feel good ordinance that very well could tie the hands of your very highly trained, educated and competent police force.

The Executive Committee of the Common Council meets this afternoon (08-04-2020) to consider:

Prohibiting the use of tear gas as of November 17, 2020 and requests a study of alternatives by the Madison Police Department (MPD).

Prohibit MPD from using tear gas, mace and impact projectile devices immediately.

What you want to bet the Committee recommends passage?

A good example of Chesterton’s gate. They want to do away with the gate, but they can’t tell you why the gate was put there in the first place. If you don’t know why the gate was originally built and put here, then you cannot take it down.

“Glad to see the Sheriff finally pushing back.”

A cynic may opine that Mahoney’s just sandbagging; putting on a “show” when he knows it’s all for naught.

MPD, using tear gas, soft projectiles, etc., incidents over many decades can be counted on one hand. So, are the “Woke” SJW are planning more mayhem ? Just asking for Yeshua’ Musa’s pals.

So, Progressive Dane darling Mahoney is trying to escape the Lib plantation? Call out Brandi and M and the rest of the tax funded race hustlers and lay siege to his house.

Mahoney is speaking up now after walking perfect rhythm with Progressive Dane for how long? Too little, too late.

Sad that it took all of the violence and his house being under siege for him to stand up.

Hey I got an idea! The “peaceful” protestors don’t want the City of Madison Police Department to use tear gas, no problem. When I was a young guy I spent some time working on my classmates farms. A nice slurry of cow poop or pig poop sprayed directly from a storage tank mounted on a truck would do rather nicely as a deterrent to the P.O.S. A-holes who want to cause riots and looting in our community. And hey, it’s organic so what could be better?

I’m sure we could find more than one farmer who would be more than happy to contribute a slurry tank or two to the cause of ending any riots and looting.

Now THAT THERE’s some mighty fine thinkin’!

And The Gotch will give the nod to the Pig $#!t

It’s more aqueous to begin with, and let’s face it, you’re at a feed mill or a co-op, you can…um…ALWAYS tell the difference between who milks cows and who raises hogs, am I right?

Sheriff Mahoney is correct — taking away “less than lethal” options actually increases the chances that lethal force may be resorted to in some situations and that’s something nobody wants.
