Portland mayor tear-gassed by federal agents, riot declared

Another day in Madison’s sister city.

A riot was declared in Portland just after midnight Thursday morning after Mayor Ted Wheeler’s tense visit with protesters– where he was booed, told to resign, given a list of demands and tear-gassed by federal agents. His visit ended with his security detail engaging in a struggle with protesters late Wednesday night as they worked to get the mayor to safety, a report said.

Was it over your head? French Revolution? Reign of Terror? nothing yet? OK, along time ago a bunch of people had “Louis Derangement Syndrome”. They came up with a lot of ideas that sounded good on paper, and then set out to enact them by force. They started killing people. Then they killed some more Then killed some more, until tens of thousands of folks had been beaten to death, starved,or beheaded. They liked it so much , that they began to kill each other. What started out as a fight against oppression, turned into a bloodbath. They got rid of a King and replaced him with a Dictator, and eventually almost destroyed the country. France has been France ever since.

And while they were conducting this bloodbath, all in the name of liberte, egalite, fraternite, they named themselves the Committe of PUBLIC SAFETY–one of the rare instances in which the French lost their capacity for irony.

What’s most sad about the fiasco of the Portland mayor’s attempt at self-aggrandizement is that, being a progressive, he’s utterly unable to engage in the kind of honest reflection that might suggest he was wrong about the terrorists he assumed would strew roses in his path as he sauntered through the ruins of his city.
