Madison is under a coronavirus lockdown AND a curfew.
Did not see THAT coming! Did Madison authorities? Busted windows, looting, a police car torched, rocks thrown, small fires, and overturned planters on State Street, Madison WI. 75 businesses damaged and/or looted. Fireworks hurled at police responding in full riot gear. At least one police officer injured. (More here.)

That’s a riot, not a demonstration. It was not confined to State Street, either. They looted East Towne and West Towne malls on the far ends of town. The participants are criminals, not activists. And, no, they are not out of town agitators. Madison grows its own self-righteous social justice warriors. Madison trains agitators. exports provocateurs. The great University of Wisconsin-Madison supplies the intellectual apologia for anarchy.
Like this get-out-of-jail-free card from The Nation: “There’s only one Possible Conclusion: White America likes its killer cops.” (Actually, there’s another explanation: The Nation wants a socialist revolution.)
Another liberal city burns
Did anyone see this coming? Perhaps. Police chief Vic Wahl, Sheriff Mahoney, and UW-PD chief Kristen Roman tried to tamp down violence with a sympathetic, we’re-outraged-too Zoom video last week. But “if Madison cannot lead the way in violent protest it will copycat.” Can’t be outdone by the Twin Cities, which endured its fifth day of violence after George Floyd died after abusive police custody.
The Policy Werkes stopped by the demonstration — when it was still peaceful — at 2 Saturday afternoon on the E. Washington Ave. side of the State Capitol. (It began at noon with a march to the site of Tony Robinson Jr.’s death on Willy Street after the 19-year-old resisted police.)
Before the riots started (at about 5 p.m.) we were prepared to get all indignant about the graffiti done to the statue of Wisconsin’s unknown Norwegian, Col. Hans Christian Heg. We asked folks gathered around whether they knew that this man died to free the slaves. Not that they cared.
“We subscribe to the broken windows theory of policing; allowing that graffiti (we also saw some on the Capitol itself) begets more lawlessness.”
Then again, an arrest recorded on a hundred smart phones is just what the professional agitators want. Make no mistake; many are trained for just such a provocation. Freedom Inc., which has shut down local governmental meetings, organized Saturday afternoon’s protest, according to Dylan Brogan at Isthmus. And yes, Brandi Grayson was in force.
The perpetrators of George Floyd’s death are being criminally prosecuted. The weekly slaughter on the streets of Chicago, not so much.
Statement from interim Police Chief Vic Wahl:
One MPD squad was broken into, driven a short distance and then set on fire. The vehicle was a complete loss. Two rifles were stolen from the vehicle before it was destroyed. Several other squads sustained damage.
Throughout the night officers were pelted with hard objects, including rocks, bottles and chairs. One officer was injured; many were struck by objects and avoided serious injury due to protective equipment.
The MPD armored rescue vehicle was hit by a bullet. Multiple small fires were set and extinguished in the area. A number of businesses in other parts of the City were also looted, including both East Towne and West Towne malls.
Three arrests were made; MPD will be working to identify, arrest and prosecute others who engaged in acts of violence, property damage, looting or theft.
MPD remains committed to protecting community members’ First Amendment rights. However, violence and property damage will not be tolerated.
Various local leaders issued statements
Kaleem Caire: This isn’t a protest. This is unrest. There is absolutely nothing pro-active about what is happening right now. The change makers left downtown before 6 o’clock and their voices still matter. George Floyd deserves better!
Clean-up this Sunday morning 05-31-2020 on lower State Street
Blaska’s Bottom Line: The prize goes to progressive-Madison Rep. Mark Pocan, who said, basically, “You’re making Donald Trump’s day.” Yeah, we forgot. The President is a racist, hates Jews, colluded with Russia, and eats hydroxychloroquine. But remember this: Neither Madison WI, Minneapolis, Washington D.C. or Oakland CA has seen a conservative mayor any time in the last 40 years.
