It will have to get worse before it gets better
There’s a lot of brave talk on my NextDoor neighborhood social media. My neighbors are tired of their cars being stolen; their garages being cased; of finding spent shell casings on the sidewalk; of being accosted at the shopping mall parking lot and seeing their schools swathed in red and blue flashing lights.
They say they’re going to take back their city; they’re going to march on City Hall …
… As if!
Pine Ridge, Fitchburg (Madison school district):
It is becoming a very sad society in Madison and surrounding areas. We can’t leave our garage doors open during the day, we have to be sure the car is locked, even if for only a minute. And the thieves are 12-15 year olds.
A Nakoma resident:
When are we all going to say enough is enough? We demonstrated back in the 70’s for reform maybe it is time to do it again…this time with your votes and the pen and your voices of concern that are turning to fear. We are letting juveniles terrorize the city because there are no repercussions? Time to change that law as well.
Another Nakoma resident:
I’m ready to join a march on the Square/City-County Building if others are. The Mayor and the County Board are not allocating resources to the true safety and well-being of this community. They take our votes for granted. Satya Rhodes-Conway is at the top of the list of people who have to go. What a wasted vote for me.
Talk is cheap, kiddoes!
Face facts, people! No one is going to march on city hall or Madison school headquarters unless it is Freedom Inc., Young Gifted & Black, or Progressive Dane. You can’t be bothered to show up at a public hearing.
Just last week, a recidivist 15-year-old peppers a girl with a pellet gun. Previously threatened to “kill everyone in the school.” (Channel 300 has the story.) Keeps getting suspended for things like roughing up his teachers. And he was still in school to shoot another student!
And here is Ali Muldrow, elected to the school board last April. She’s good for two more years before her term is up. She mocks citizens “who are afraid all the time, who are afraid of middle school students, who worry irrationally about their cars.”
New superintendent, spending referendum on tap
Three of the seven Madison Board of Education seats are up for the April 7, 2020, non-partisan Spring election. They are: Seats #2 Savion Castro, #6 Kate Toews, and #7 Nikki Vander Meulen. Castro is a clone of Ali Muldrow and Ananda Mirilli. Appointed to Mary Burke’s unfinished term, Castro is running for election. Mirilli, Muldrow, and Vander Meulen voted against police in schools. All three are or were Progressive Dane.
⇒ The stakes are high! The next school board will hire a new superintendent to replace the one who wrote the dense and bureaucratic Behavior Education Plan. Will it be another superintendent who race-shames teachers trying to get control of their classrooms? That school board is likely to float a referendum to permit it to spend an another $315 million (on top of a $479 million annual budget).

Dave, You somehow endured a BIG buncha Progressive ordure, and relentlessly persevered. Your blog is a safe haven for real folks who are concerned. Not sure at all if anyone will “step up” but rest assured, the MMSD has planted some land mines and are not sure where they are or when they’ll get stepped on. Too bad that in the meantime, the kids who perform/don’t perform are of little consequence to folks who should care.

School board salary = $350/mth. for how many public hours of meetings and how many personal hours to understand the issues and how many hours of harassment.

Anyone that draws breath knows Blaska (and Kaleem Caire**) are outliers; the rest of the MMSD board Lefties fall into one of two groups:
*”We gonna make Whitey PAY,” and
*”Children don’t have agency, ergo, they require our Social Engineering interference, otherwise we can’t pretend to redress always some White Supremacy B.S. and siphon off some/all of our grinding White Lefty Guilt.”

Council Chief of Staff— $107,000/yr + benefits. Position created last year.
Police baby sitter— $97,000/yr + benefits. Position created this year.
Racial Equity Coordinator— 83,000/yr + benefits. Position created 2015.
But we love our kids.

Dave, I know you’re frustrated from spinning your wheels. But, IMHO, it is illogical to expect concerned but isolated and unorganized individuals, ignorant of the “system’s” workings, to show up alone at a meeting and be able to present a successful plea for sanity to the school board, or to run for public office. Most people (unlike the professional agitators and current school board know-it-alls) have real jobs, need to work to support themselves and their families, and have other responsibilities. There must be organization, cohesion, coordination, education and training on how to proceed. A rich sugar daddy to financially support the effort would help, too.

I don’t disagree. In addition to a smidgeon of courage I should have added, as a necessary ingredient to seek public office, a certain foolhardiness. That said, there is an infrastructure available to help the common sense candidate. And yes, sacrifice is required.
