‘Tis the Season
Ask the on-line retailer to mark them “BOOKS”
Saw this on NextDoor social media today (12-08-19):
A policeman brought one of my packages to my door. I live on Piping Rock Rd. [Madison WI] The box and its content were found behind Falk School. Apparently, someone stole the package from my doorstep, opened it in the area, only to find that it was a book. So the person discarded it. Please be on the lookout for your deliveries. Sincerely, Freida.
Hate to think the thief was a student at Falk school. A not very studious student.
The Gotch used to live in a 6300 block Hammersley Road duplex, the back yard of which abutted Falk School.
He’s also GREAT friends with a former Falkan Girl AND Falkan Boy Of The Year, the children of a former/late Falk School Librarian, who was also a GREAT friend!
While my guitar gently weeps…

You overlooked the ultimate solution to this problem: buy your stuff from stores (preferably locally owned ones) instead of from a gigantic corporation/monopoly.

Coupla weeks ago, Amazon delivered package to my detached garage. When I found it, 2/3rds torn open, but since only photo paper, it was tossed back down. I figgered it was transit damage until a week ago, when my car was rummaged. I had used the remote hatch lift and musta hit unlock, too, on the fob. Every cubby, the glovebox and center console contents were piled on the driver’s seat. The ‘Hood is tiny and well off the beaten path in the countryside but…. Soon they’ll just hand out citations instead of waste the time for court -in which they only “catch-n-release”. Lights & locks, and ever vigilant, plus “Nextdoor.com” is useful…

Are you for real with this? And you wanted to be on the school board? I can only imagine your rapport with children.

The current school board has great rapport with kids and they’re stealing packages off front door steps and cars from driveways. You O.K. with that?

Hey Butch,
For real with what?
My sources inform me that youngsters within DBs sphere of influence (past/present) are kind and well mannered productive citizens. He would have been a great Board member.

My former letter carrier, who prowls around this site unannounced and stumbled upon this post, got his USPS start in the Falk School area and shared a story from ~ 30 years ago:
“I remember delivering a book to one of the duplexes on the odd side of the street (6200-6300 block Hammersley Road) where the two addresses shared a front porch. I delivered what appeared to be a Scholastic book addressed to a child at the address. As I moved across the porch to the next address, the kid’s father(?) came out on the porch, retrieved the mail from his box, came over to me and gave me the book, and said these exact words. ‘We don’t need no books’. I thought about how much the child may have been looking forward to getting a book in the mail. These kids don’t stand a chance.”
Three decades have passed; have things gotten better, stayed the same, or gotten worse?

That “?” after “father” says it all.
