Blaska Policy Werkes

David Blaska, going out of his way to provoke progressives in Madison WI to make America safe for democracy!

Gov. Tony Evers is transparent, alright

Transparently cynical!

Freedom of the Press  if you agree with me

One of the stories the graybeards at The Capital Times used to tell was of a certain reporter in the glory days of the 1950s named Aldric Revell. After hearing a Republican’s speech, the leftist scribe informed the political figure that it would take him about one hour to misinterpret his remarks for the final edition of that afternoon’s newspaper.

It was a biased publication then and it is no less biased now, although in reduced form. So we are more than a little curious whether our old employer will break with party solidarity and side with the MacIver Report on general principle, that principle being the First Amendment.

Newspaper reader
By God, I agree with this news!

Freedom of the press, anyone?

The MacIver Report has filed lawsuit in federal court against Gov. Tony Evers for systematically excluding the on-line publication from press events, including his administration’s budget press briefing that was open to other journalists. Those other journalists being such left-leaning contacts as Progressive magazine, Devil’s Advocate Radio, The Capital Times, the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, Democratic legislative offices, and left-wing advocacy groups such as One Wisconsin Now. (MacIver’s own accounting, here.)

The MacIver Report, by contrast, is decidedly conservative. It is “A Free Market Voice for Wisconsin.” Some recent headlines:

• “Evers Packs Payroll Fraud Task Force with Big Labor Allies”

• “Evers might Have Money for Tom’s Trolley After All”

• “Evers Faces Legal Action on ‘Draconian’ Groundwater Laws”

As a conservative voice, MacIver has few friends in this one-party town.

Let’s play the “Just Imagine” game: Imagine (if you will) that Governor Scott Walker excluded The Capital Times from his press conferences. Imagine the sturm und drang! We recall the fulmination when Trump restricted CNN reporter Jim Acosta. That, at least, could be attributed fairly to his personal misconduct.

Censorship for a good cause

The Evers’ administrations response would be hilarious if it were not so Orwellian:

“Gov. Evers is committed to openness and transparency in state government, and he believes strongly that a fair and unbiased press corps is essential to our democracy, especially now as Wisconsinites and all Americans are calling for accountability from elected officials who refuse to take action on gun safety reform, healthcare, and the hatred and violence borne of white supremacy.”

GET IT! That is Evers spokesman Melissa Baldauf throwing a bucket of chum at her “woke” constituency. MacIver is conservative, Republican, free enterprise, and — the implication is strong with this one — a TRUMP SUPPORTER. Except for the inconvenient fact that MacIver concentrates solely on state issues.

Unity v racism

Assailing hate

Your (liberal) credentials, please!

What else is new(s)? The New York Times briefly wrote a straight-news headline about Trump: “Trump Urges Unity Against Racism.” The Resistance went nuts! A Washington Post writer relates:

My Nation colleague … was among the many who decided that the Times had crossed an unforgivable line. “I canceled my subscription,” she explained on Twitter. “I know a lot of folks will tell me I’m wrong. I will miss it. But I can’t keep rewarding such awful news judgment.

The furor over the headline is only the latest in a long string of controversies in which progressives have accused The New York Times, reputedly a liberal newspaper, of giving aid and comfort to an authoritarian president and his far-right politics.

Blaska’s Bottom LineNo doubt, The Nation would be welcome at Tony Evers’ quarters in the East Wing; we suspect the Democrat(ic) governor would forgive the Times of new York for its momentary apostasy.

It would follow that his Lt. Governor would be transparent as well, am I right?

    Not exactly.

A Year After Telling Public Otherwise, Mandela Barnes Says He HASN’T COMPLETED College Degree

Righties unite! Let’s head on down to the Capital to screech off-key in the Key of Me (H/T @Norwood 44) and bang on pots-n-pans til the cows come home.

OHHH PPLLEEEEAASEE; spare me the pearl clutching about these guys not getting a hand-engraved invite from Evers. When the gop was holding secret meetings on district maps no one was informed. Then Vos had them sign an agreement to not speak publicly about what on behind closed doors at 3 am. There was no “public comment” when they met to limit Evers’ power as gov. Save the grandstanding for another day.

It seems that “drop-outs” are only respected if they are republican.

At least Walker was senior class Vice President while Barnes was caught cheating in his campaign by his school. Oh wait, I guess it was the other way around.

Dave, you’re refuting something I never claimed; that Walker was thrown out of Marquette for cheating on his campaign. I do find it VERY hard to believe his people or the college republicans stole the disparaging student newspapers without his knowledge, whether he masterminded it or not. Nothing on this was proven one way or the other. However, he and his opponent both committed various other campaign violations and received minor sanctions from the university. Also from Politifact:
“Both sides tripped over campaign rules that limited spending and how and where candidates could distribute literature and place signs on campus. Each side lodged complaints against the other.
An election commission found Walker guilty of campaigning a week early. A Quigley worker campaigned too close to polls. An unregistered Walker worker dropped literature at students’ doors. Walker lost campaign privileges in one Marquette facility, and lost a day of campaigning as another penalty.”
My whole point was that Walker had a history of sleazy (or if you prefer, questionable) campaign tactics in school while Mandela Barnes did not. My point stands. Meanwhile Gootch and Splat, hacks that they are, are pretty quick to call someone a liar when they don’t like the truth. Sad.

Lawsuits mean nothing to Robbing Vos and Co. They have a bunch of Illinois lawyers on retainer for 120k a month and even if they lose the taxpayers will pick up the tab. What is needed is a change to our state laws that would make people like Vos personally responsible for these kinds of suits.

”That is an outright lie about Scott Walker, many times debunked”

@AnonyBob is thus ideally suited for the position of Lt. Governor of WI.

However, getting any votes may be a problem, him having that Hillarity Clinton level of likability quotient & all…

Walker’s people trashed all the school newspapers immediately before the election because of a negative story or editorial. He didn’t know about it? He wasn’t sanctioned by Marquette? I’m unaware this was debunked. Please enlighten me.

“The Democratic Party website said that “Scott Walker was kicked out of student elections at Marquette University after masterminding a scheme that destroyed newspapers critical of him.” It added that “Walker either dropped out or was forced out not long after.” The party offered nothing to backup up its claims, and our investigation found no backup either. And statements by Marquette go a long way to contradicting the party’s statements.”
